She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Richard Strauss (1864 -1949) Strauss's music amounts to a huge body of symphonic and operatic work written over 60 years. Full of vitality, endlessly melodic, brilliantly orchestrated, it begins and ends in the romantic tradition, but for the most part expresses something more modern and individualistic, not without controversy in its time. Variation of style and structure is drawn from the descriptive (literary) nature of compositions, and an extraordinary inventiveness enlivens the scenes, moods and situations. Strauss said once that he produced music the way cows give milk, and indeed his music rarely seems contrived. The opera Strauss wrote 15 operas on a variety of subjects and across the whole spectrum of drama. He acknowledged being enchanted by the soprano voice, and his writing for it highlights many of the works, including Adriane auf Naxos (composed in 1912). The opera has been described as 'sparkling', which sums it up well, and passages influenced by Bach, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner add to the interest. The storyline is a play within a play, the second part being the mythological 'Opera' staged in the story. The three pieces transcribed* are from this Opera. The guitar arrangements All classical guitar pieces are compromises. The instrument has only six strings, the left hand four fingers able to be used, and with the right hand its rare to use more than three fingers and the thumb. So, despite the amount of noise possible, it's inevitable that passages occur where either harmony, bass or fragments of counterpoint that would be beneficial are left out. In particular, the higher up the neck music is played the simpler it tends to be, if harder to play, and unless the low bass is an open string there wont be any. So I think the main part of attaining a fair transcription (better to be called an arrangement if the original musical structure is not strictly followed, as in this case) is determining how a good compromise can be reached. Melody, counterpoint, bass and main harmonies demand inclusion, and register is important. One may generally assume the original score can't be improved on. However, if the music may sound well on guitar, and the above elements can be incorporated without the playing becoming very difficult, something enjoyable to play and worthwhile listening to should be able to be achieved. Overture; 'A golden time …' Here the Mozart influence, better, inspiration, is wonderfully evident. A gentle waltz time (only the first section of the overture is transcribed) carries the colourful harmonies, strong melodic threads and connecting flourishes that stamp both pieces. The aria is alluded to in the Overture several times, which as you would expect, is intricately woven with the hints themes later to be established in the Opera. It has a kind of 'jazzy' freedom, and it's always miraculous to me that composition so involved can retain its musical line, here done in Strauss's inimitable way. The aria, sung not far into the Opera, has the perfect inevitability of Mozart, but again it is Strauss. As explained, keys have been changed to suit the guitar. Chorus and Aria This selection from the finale has features well worth trying to translate. The device of having a strong chorus, in the style of a Bach chorale, stated and then counterpointed by a solo voice in a restatement, is potent, and that in the opera the chorus (of the three nymphs) isn't immediately followed by the accompanying aria (of Ariadne) means the latter comes as a moment of surprising beauty. Neither parts are complicated, and lovely arpeggios, a feature Strauss's music, often impart the assured progressions. A problem was to capture the distinct register of the soprano voices, som.

The variations are: Lobster Jazz Waltz, Sea-anemone Belly-dance, Tuna Tune, Luminous Light Show, Dolphin Fling, Jaws Serial and Blues Whale Pavane.The piece lasts about eight minutes with repeats.TECHNICAL NOTE The C harmonics will be a pip flat--they are only bursting bubbles anyway!Scuba Fins tries to feel the quiet calmness and agelessness of the underwater world, using the ancient and universal major pentatonic scale C,D,E, G,A ,C. The rhythm is mostly steady and simple, but triplets indicate the occasional extra effort. Now and again, he glances down at the infinite depths. Tintinnabulation and soft staccatissimo arpeggios represent the bubbles. Lobster Waltz is a jazz waltz with many staccato notes and leaps representing the many appendages and the tangle of lively giant crustaceans.Sea-anemone Belly-Dance pictures the soft body and tentacles swaying under the waves, using the Arabic scale Shad 'Araban, roughly G,Ab, B,C,D,Eb,F#,G and influenced by a dance to the folk tune known as Bint El-Salabiya.Tuna Tune is a quick moto perpetuo in the cheerful major mode, septuple time, the rapid rise and fall of the phrases and of volume reflecting the powerful shoal's unpredictable, ceaseless movements, approaching and retreating.Dolphin Fling is a stathspey, or highland fling, using the major mode and typical dance rhythms including the Scotch snap to depict the weighty but intelligent dolphins enjoying their leisure time and perhaps dancing with the diver.Jaws Serial reminds us of the fear a shark generates, using the dissonant 12-note serial mode and unpredictable leaps and pauses. The opening slow trill will chill you as it invokes the Jaws film theme by John Williams. You might even hear the diver's heart sink and the snap pizzicato of the teeth snapping. The prime row is the nearest possible to the original theme: Bb, Ab, F, Eb, B, C, E, G, Db, D, Gb.A, but I have followed the contours of the main themes. Blues Whale is a pavane, a slow, stately processional incorporating the typical renaissance drum rhythm. and using a blues scale, G, A, Bb, C, C#, D, F, G, and an implied 12-bar minor blues harmony.

After his studies of music in LevoÄa, Debrecen and PreÅ¡ov, he obtained the position of first violinist at the „Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The same time he studied harmony, counterpoint and started to compose. Since 1854 he received the position as conductor of the orchestra of Johann Sommer in Berlin, he already used the name Béla Kéler. Later he became leader of the military band under count Mazzuchelli. The last twenty years of his life he spent as leader of the spa-orchestra in Wiesbaden and was devoted on composing. He performed in all European cultural centres, as London, Manchester, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Dresden, Leipzig etc. Still he often and gladly returned to his home city Bartfeld. Kéler has written 27 big waltzes, 27 marches, 20 csárdás, 18 polkas, 15 songs, 13 galops, 12 overtures, a ballet and several „musical paintings, such as the idyllic Carpathians, his first important composition which praises the Slovakian nature. The most frequently played theme of Kéler´s work are the 32 bars from his csárdás Memory of Bartfeld, op. 31, which were used by Johannes Brahms for his Hungarian dance No. 5 in the original notation of the author. Kéler´s music, in the time of its creation, could hold his own with the Vienna masters Joseph Lanner and „king of waltzes Johann Strauss jun. Already in his lifetime his 138 compositions were edited in 12 European countries. His manuscripts now belong in parts to the collection of the Å ariÅ¡ museum at Bardejov. The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

The strict polyphonic writing of the earlier serial works as well as the free homophonic style of the last almost tonic are here altogether in a almost progressive idiom. The programmatic nature of this composition coexists with the absolute musical sound form. Titles of variations like Waltz funebre or Jazz Polka, in an austere musical text give the point for a new direction in composer’s creative thinking. The year 2022 marked a milestone for the United States Air Force, as the world’s greatest airpower celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance. Omaha’s classical radio station was also celebrating a milestone year with its 50th anniversary. The resulting composition, cleverly titled “On the Air,†was written to observe both momentous anniversaries. The introduction plays on a cleverly adapted four-bar rhythmic motif that repeats, each time growing in intensity, conjuring images of a radio newsroom about to air breaking news. This opening rhythm is derived from Morse code letters K, V, N, & O (__ . __ | . . . __ | __ . | __ __ __), which is Omaha’s classical radio station. The main melodic theme begins after the intense introduction, stemming from the KVNO motif, and exudes energy worthy of the greatest of celebrations, replete with trumpets punctuating the strains with fanfare-like figures. After the KVNO transition to an exciting new key, the theme occurs a second time in the trumpets before simmering down to the second theme in a slower tempo, intended to be retrospective of the last 75 and 50 years of the two celebrating entities. In homage to the conflicts, sacrifices, and losses during 75 years of Air Force history, this melancholy melody in the horn repeats in octaves with horn and tuba, contrasting with the opening jubilation. However, without starkly “snapping back†to a celebratory mood, the original theme gently makes its reentry in the form of a mellow waltz with duetting trumpets, as a hopeful look to the future. The second iteration of the waltz brings back hints of the Morse code letters in the introduction, as underlying accompaniment to build energy and drive. It pivots fully with the KVNO introductory motif that changes keys while exploding with the recapitulation of the original full theme, intensifying the celebratory mood for the present festivities. The waltz version of the theme comes back, fragmented, hinting toward a fugato treatment. The non-fugal fragmentation is laced with virtuosically ornamented accompanimental lines reminiscent of a British-style brass band, and quickly settles into a full climactic presentation of the waltz iteration. The work ends full circle, with repeated KVNO rhythmic statements, in grand fashion for a firework finale.

If played as I imagine it its length should be around 4'30. It starts simply, with a melancholic melody (A) and then it switches to a difficult section (B) in which the player will need power - especially on the left hand - and technical skills. The dynamic and mood contrast between A and B should be huge. The main theme then comes back, but very modified and contaminated (A1). One last theme is exposed (C) before the reprise (A) and the conclusion of the music piece. There are many modulations in this waltz but none of them leads to a stable tonaily change. When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

Based on the Gaelic folk song The Praise of Islay (Moladh na Landaidh), the second movement’s title comes from one the song’s last verses, O, may long their wild notes flow. The third movement’s theme was extracted from the letters of Laphroaig, one of the most iconic Scotch whiskies, whose name’s meaning inspired the title, By the Broad Bay. In the second part, the traditional Celtic melody, An Islay Pipe Reel, is quoted. Published by Andrew Kierszenbaum (A0.1031550). My first score of 2018! It lasts about 6 minutes and is of about intermediate/advanced difficulty. It is the result of many hours, drafts, ideas, scribbles, and edits, BUT- above all, it is a labor of love and I hope THAT shines through the music the most... For this piece, I was inspired by dances and fantasies of the romantic period, especially those by Chopin and Schumann. However, I believe the piece doesn't feel trapped in an imitation of the music of a specific era. It uses the romantic and classical traditions as baselines and, in my opinion, transcends them. A major work I was inspired by is the Polonaise-Fantasy by Chopin. I wanted to create a dreamy, ballade-like, somewhat freeform/improvised landscape of texture and feeling that explores the waltz form but also infuses some elements of sonata form and theme and variations.I would put the piece at an intermediate/advanced level, but would definitely recommend this to teachers and students alike (I have already given it to a few in my own circle).The fee for this piece goes directly to me, so I can continue following my passion by composing and teaching students the wonderful gift that is piano playing!Please enjoy, and I would love to hear what you think of this one!Sincerely,Andrew
