Full Orchestra - Level 3 - SKU: A0.976734 Composed by Robert Myers. 20th Century,Christmas,Contemporary. Score and parts. 99 pages. WheatMyer Music #6496769. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976734). CONJUNCTION interprets the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn near the end of the year 2020 as a celestial metaphor for the good news of Christ's birth in a replay of the Star of Bethlehem. Hence, its subtitle of The Christmas Star of 2020. The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times. It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars. For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme. Still, it’s the music that tells the story of the Christmas Star of 2020.Please visit my website for a complete score preview: https://wheatmyermusic.com/conjunction-the-christmas-star-of-2020I feel somewhat guilty making claim to this music as almost all the building blocks are taken from other composers. But the end result is neither a medley, nor an arrangement, rather it is something clearly new, so I call it my own with deep respect to those giants on whose shoulders I stand.Robert MyersS.D.G.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet - Level 5 - SKU: A0.912906 Composed by Brandon Nelson. Concert,Contemporary. 93 pages. Brandon Nelson #1954835. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912906). Imagine the terrifying prospect of having your fate-indeed, the fate of the entire universe-decided by the fickle whims of seven gods! This was life for all those who dwelled in the ancient society of Sumeria! They Who Decide Fate paints the picture of what living with these gods might have been like for those pitiable mortals. The introduction builds to the dreadful fate theme, which is woven within the rest of the piece. In the first episode, the Eb clarinet is highlighted depicting Enki, the magical, clever Lord of the Earth. Crafty and mischievous, one would not cross this god, so mighty he was said to have created the Tigris and Euphrates rivers between which the entire Sumerian world existed! The full orchestra comes roaring back to represent Shamash, the Lion of Justice. Bringing wrongdoers their just due, he could also be merciful, curing the faithful sick who plead for his mercy. The second episode is gently ushered in by the Basset horn. Featured here is Ninhursag, the mild, nurturing Mother Goddess. It was said that any couple who desired to be fertile would do well to propitiate themselves to herâ?¦ An explosive, percussive jolt fanfares in Inanna, wild, untamed Goddess of Primal Passions! Whether in war or in lust, Inanna stood for all things raw-and ultimately destructive! The low, rumbling voice of the contralto clarinet brings us Anu, Father of the Gods. Ancient and wise, Anu is the manifestation of the heavenly vault. Nanna, the moon god riding on the back of a bull, illuminated the night sky. Sparkling and light colors of the orchestra depict his deft, spry nocturnal motions. The sinuous lines of the Bb clarinet illustrate Enlil, fickle God of Wind and Weather. It is said that it was he who created humans, but lost interest in them and flooded the whole earth. The whole clarinet quartet reprises the fate theme one last time, ending in an exultant flurry, reflecting both the fear and ecstasy that these seven gods inspired in their mortal charges. Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1270160 By Arlo Guthrie. By Arlo Guthrie. Arranged by Craig Hanson. A Cappella,Comedy,Folk. Octavo. 6 pages. Edition Craig Hanson #862589. Published by Edition Craig Hanson (A0.1270160). For TTBB chorus a cappella and solo voice. As performed by Arlo Guthrie.Wanna hear something? You know that Indians never ate clams. They didn't have linguini! And so what happened was that clams was allowed to grow unmolested in the coastal waters of America for millions of years. And they got big, and I ain't talking about clams in general, I'm talking about each clam! Individually. I mean each one was a couple of million years old or older. So imagine they could have got bigger than this whole room. And when they get that big, God gives them little feet so that they could walk around easier. And when they get feet, they get dangerous. I'm talking about real dangerous. I ain't talking about sitting under the water waiting for you. I'm talking about coming after you.Imagine being on one of them boats coming over to discover America, like Columbus or something, standing there at night on watch, everyone else is either drunk or asleep. And you're watching for America and the boat's going up and down. And you don't like it anyhow but you gotta stand there and watch, for what? Only he knows, and he ain't watching. You hear the waves lapping against the side of the ship. The moon is going behind the clouds. You hear the pitter patter of little footprints on deck. ‘Is that you kids?’ It ain't! My god! It's this humongous, giant clam!Imagine those little feet coming on deck. A clam twice the size of the ship. Feet first. You're standing there shivering with fear, you grab one of these. This is a belaying pin. They used to have these stuck in the holes all around the ship… You probably didn't know what this is for; you probably had an idea, but you were wrong. They used to have these stuck in the holes all along the sides of the ship, everywhere. You wouldn't know what this is for unless you was that guy that night.I mean, you'd grab this out of the hole, run on over there, bam bam on them little feet! Back into the ocean would go a hurt, but not defeated, humongous, giant clam. Ready to strike again when opportunity was better. You know not even the coastal villages was safe from them big clams. You know them big clams had an inland range of about 15 miles. Think of that. I mean our early pioneers and the settlers built little houses all up and down the coast you know. A little inland and stuff like that and they didn't have houses like we got now, with bathrooms and stuff. They built little privies out back. And late at night, maybe a kid would have to go, and he'd go stomping out there in the moonlight. And all they'd hear for miles around...(loud clap/belch).... One less kid for America. One more smiling, smurking, humongous, giant clam.So Americans built forts. Them forts --you know—them pictures of them forts with the wooden points all around. You probably thought them points was for Indians but that's stupid! 'Cause Indians know about doors. But clams didn't. Even if a clam knew about a door, so what? A clam couldn't fit in a door. I mean, he'd come stomping up to a fort at night, put them feet on them points, jump back crying, tears coming out of them everywhere. But Americans couldn't live in forts forever. You couldn't just build one big fort around America. How would you go to the beach? So what they did was they formed groups of people. I mean they had groups of people all up and down the coast form these little alliances. Like up North it was call the Clamshell Alliance. And farther down South it was called the Catfish Alliance. They had these Alliances all up and down the coast defending themselves against these threatening monsters. These humongous giant clams. Andt hey'd go out there, if there was maybe fifteen of them they'd be singing songs in fifteen part harmony. And when one part disappeared, that's how they knew where the clam would be.Which is why Americans only sing in four part harmony to this very day. That proved to be too dangerous. See, what they did was they'd be singing these songs called Clam Chanties, and they'd have these big spears called clampoons. And they'd be walking up and down the beach and the method they eventually devised where they'd have this guy, the most strongest heavy duty true blue American, courageous type dude they could find and they'd have him out there walking up and down the beach by himself with other chicken dudes hiding behind the sand dunes somewhere. He'd be singing the verses. They'd be singing the chorus, and clams would hear 'em. And clams hate music. So clams would come out of the water and they'd come after this one guy. And all you'd see pretty soon was flying all over the sand flying up and down the beach manmanclamclammanmanclam manclamclamman up and down the beach going this way and that way up the hills in the water out of the water behind the trees everywhere. Finally the man would jump over a big sand dune, roll over the side, the clam would come over the dune, fall in the hole and fourteen guys would come out there and stab the shit out of him with their clampoons. That's the way it was. That was one way to deal with them. The other way was to weld two clams together. [I don't believe it. I'm losing it. Hey. What can you do. Another night shot to hell.] Hey, this was serious back then. This was very serious. I mean these songs now are just piddly folk songs. But back then these songs were controversial. These was radical, almost revolutionary songs. Because times was different and clams was a threat to America. That's right. So we want to sing this song tonight about the one last... You see what they did was there was one man, he was one of these men, his name will always be remembered, his name was Reuben Clamzo, and he was one of the last great clam men there ever was. He stuck the last clam stab. The last clampoon into the last clam that was ever seen on this continent. Knowing he would be out of work in an hour. He did it anyway so that you and me could go to the beach in relative safety. That's right. Made America safe for the likes of you and me. And so we sing this song in his memory. He went into whaling like most of them guys did and he got out of that, when he died. You know, clams was much more dangerous than whales. Clams can run in the water, on the water or on the ground, and they are so big sometimes that they can jump and they can spread their kinda shells and kinda almost fly like one of them flying squirrels. You could be standing there thinking that your perfectly safe and all of a sudden whop.... That's true... And so this is the song of this guy by the name of Reuben Clamzo and the song takes place right after he stabbed this clam and the clam was, going through this kinda death dance over on the side somewhere. The song starts there and he goes into whaling and takes you through the next...I sing the part of the guy on the beach by himself. I go like this: Poor old Reuben Clamzo and you go Clamzo Boys Clamzo. That's the part of the fourteen chicken dudes over on the other side. That's what they used to sing. They'd be calling these clams out of the water. Like taunting them making fun of them. Clams would get real mad and come out. Here we go. I want you to sing it in case you ever have an occasion to join such an alliance. You know some of these alliances are still around. Still defending America against things like them clams. If you ever wants to join one, now you have some historic background. So you know where these guys are coming from. It's not just some 60's movement or something, these things go back a long time.Notice the distinction you're going to have to make now between the first and easy Clamzo Boys Clamzo and the more complicated Clamzo Me Boys Clamzo. Stay serious! Folk songs are serious. That's what Pete Seeger told me. Arlo I only want to tell you one thing... Folk songs are serious. I said right. Let's do it in C for Clam...Iet's do it in B... For boy that's a big clam... Iet' s do it in G for Gee, I hope that big clam don't see me. Let's do it in F... For …he sees me. Let's do it back in A...for a clam is coming. Better get this song done quick. The Story of Reuben Clamzo and His Strange Daughter in the Key of A.

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1120365 By Philip Le Bas. By J-B Lully / G Bizet. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #721616. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1120365). A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

Two Epiphany anthems for the price of one. Firstly, Arabia's Magi sought him is a setting of original English words by the composer which references the journey of the Magi, their gifts and the redemption of the world following a humble birth. This three-part (S,A,Bar.) homophonic piece is only one page in length but, in its 45-second duration, sets the scene for the following Latin motet. Ubi est qui natus est uses the words from Matthew 2,2 when the Magi ask after the new-born King of Judea. Comprising three short contrapuntal sections, this section lasts about 1.15. Either section (English or Latin) may be used independently or, as intended, with the English followed immediately by the Latin.Marked as Early Intermediate because there are a few intervals which may catch the unwary sight-reader. However, with practice, this is certainly not difficult. (And, yes, I know this is not actually a Christmas piece, but it may well be included in a service of Lessons & Carols - and there was no option for Epiphany.)N.B. The second & third pages are for reference; please print (& back) pages 1 & 3-5 for the complete work, or 3-5 to miss the title page.

Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est? I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert. N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.

Jmsgu3 #1079563. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1504108). The 12 Days of Christmas is significant for its cultural and religious implications. This period, also known as Twelvetide, spans from December 25 (Christmas Day) to January 6 (Epiphany), marking the time between the birth of Jesus and the arrival of the Magi. Historical ContextThe tradition of the 12 days was formalized by the Council of Tours in 567, which proclaimed this time a sacred season, emphasizing the importance of celebration and reflection during this period. Each day is associated with various saints and religious observances, making it a time of spiritual significance for many Christians. The Carol and Its MeaningThe well-known carol The Twelve Days of Christmas lists a series of increasingly extravagant gifts given on each of the twelve days. Although it is often perceived as a simple festive song, there are theories about its deeper meanings. One popular but debunked theory suggests that the gifts symbolize elements of the Christian faith, serving as a secret catechism for Catholics during times of persecution. However, this interpretation lacks substantial historical evidence and is considered more of a myth than fact. Cultural PracticesCulturally, the 12 Days of Christmas have evolved into various traditions, including gift-giving, feasting, and festive gatherings. In some cultures, gifts are exchanged on January 6, celebrated as Three Kings Day, while others may celebrate throughout twelve days. The carol likely originated as a memory game for children, intended to be fun and engaging rather than a severe religious text. In summary, the 12 Days of Christmas represent a blend of religious significance, historical tradition, and cultural celebration, making it an enduring aspect of the Christmas season.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.JES171). 9 x 12 in inches.Boppin' at the Laundromat, a piece for Jazz Ensemble featuring Oboe and Tuba soloists, is a programmatic story. The first idea to come to mind was the dissonant chord (m. 16, m. 24, m. 32, etc.) intended to emulate a dryer buzzer. From there, a story began to take shape. An attractive gentleman (tuba) approaches the counter at his local laundromat (m. 17), looking to have some of his clothes washed. Soon after, an attractive lady (oboe) approaches the counter along with the man (m. 23), and they notice each other. The mutual attraction is palpable, illustrated with arpeggios in triplets in the piano and vibes (m. 33). Their clothes washing questions are resolved, and they take their seats, nearby each other, of course. The small talk begins.Just then, some noisier patrons enter (brass), completing the laundering atmosphere. A high trumpet lick (m. 61) is the ever present obnoxious laughter that always seems to have an outburst at the most inopportune time. The following solo section (m. 66) is a lull in the superficial conversation of the lady and gentleman, where each is left to their own thoughts.Suddenly (m. 78), the conversation begins anew, with a more personal and profound interaction between them. All the while, the other launderers continue their carrying on. At measure 121, the man's dryer finishes, followed soon after by the woman's (m. 122), and the pair go their separate ways. Their story to be completed in the mind of the listener.

Piano Solo - SKU: A0.1029428 Composed by Taylor Kroff. Contemporary. Score. 113 pages. Listening Heart, LLC #4890651. Published by Listening Heart, LLC (A0.1029428). Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English Divine is beautiful and loves what is beautiful. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) Our heartfelt prayer is that this music serves to awaken people of all religious traditions to the sacred musical treasures of Islam and that it contributes to interfaith harmony. CarolAnn Barrows & Taylor Kroff The Mevlidi Sherif, the finest expression of reverence for Muhammad (pbuh), forms an essential part in the religious instruction of most Turkish minds. We hope that this new symphony will foster an interest and understanding of the Muslim soul, even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Considering how Christians feel about their Christmas carols provides some understanding of what the Mevlidi Sherif (or mawlud) means to Muslims. Over 500 years ago Süleyman Çelebi, from the Great Mosque at Bursa, wrote the Mevlidi Sherif (then entitled Vesiletu’n-necat) so that Turks would have access to the magical, mystical story of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), which had previously only been available in Arabic. Over the centuries this epic poem has been recited and sung in Mosques and in homes; on countless occasions of rejoicing and sorrow, such as births, weddings, house blessings, graduations, and especially to celebrate the Night of Power and the Birthday (mawlid) of Muhammad (pbuh). Some consider it to be the most frequently recited poem in the world. In 1942, as an act of interfaith and goodwill, Mr. F. Lyman MacCallum, a Christian missionary who was born in Turkey to missionary parents, translated into English this epic poem and published it in a journal dedicated to promoting East/West understanding. This was a remarkable artistic feat as MacCallum stayed true to the traditional Turkish poetic meter, mathnawī of fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilâtün fâ’ilün, as well as holding fast to the authentic meaning of the original text. In 2015, Dr. Timuçin Çevikoğlu, from Ankara University in Turkey, discovered MacCallum’s English translation of this most beloved poem. With the intention to help those in the west better understand the very heart of Islam, he invited sacred music singer, Ms. CarolAnn Barrows from Maui, Hawaii, USA to be the first person to ever sing the Mevlidi Sherif in English. He asked her to compose music that would appeal to western sensibilities. Ms. Barrows interviewed many composers to assist her. It wasn’t until she heard from Mr. Taylor Kroff from Austin, Texas, U.S.A., that she knew she’d found the right person for the task. Using digital technology they were able to work together, even though thousand of miles apart. They amended and re-translated the text of the original English version of the poem and composed the Mevlidi Sherif Symphony ~ in English. The recording is now available online all over the world. This music was born out of our desire to help non-Muslims appreciate the love all Muslims have for their Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); to create greater understanding and peace among nations. We are not suggesting that anyone change their faith, but rather that greater world peace will be achieved by understanding and accepting the faith of others. We pray that this music will serve to remove the boundaries which divide different religious faiths by bringing to full light the underlying wisdom with which they are all united. Published by LCS Productions (A0.1256884). Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone. The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette. After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer. Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together. On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures. The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

Published by BJE Music (A0.1316341). The Little Drummer Boy (originally known as Carol of the Drum) is a popular Christmas song written by American composer Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941.  First recorded in 1951 by the Trapp Family, the song was further popularized by a 1958 recording by the Harry Simeone Chorale; the Simeone version was re-released successfully for several years, and the song has been recorded many times since. In the lyrics, the singer relates how, as a poor young boy, he was summoned by the Magi to the Nativity of Jesus. Without a gift for the Infant, the little drummer boy played his drum with approval from Jesus' mother, Mary, recalling, I played my best for him and He smiled at me.This is an arrangement for the Concert Band and SATB Choir – Would work with Solo or unison voices instead.  There is an optional Piano part.  There are parts for both Horns in F and Eb, Euphonium in BC and TC, Tubas in C, Eb, and Bb… The MP3 was recorded with NotePerformer 4. Grade = 3 Duration = 2:45 mins.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1446054 Composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck,. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Opera. 16 pages. Keith Terrett #1025876. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1446054). Orfeo ed Euridice is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama. The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot—the underground rescue mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions—can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold.Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.Ther picture is Count Francesco Algarotti, an Italian polymath, philosopher, poet, essayist, anglophile, art critic and art collector. He was a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and opera. He was a friend of Frederick the Great and leading authors of his times: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens, Pierre-Louis de Maupertuis and the atheist Julien Offray de La Mettrie. Lord Chesterfield, Thomas Gray, George Lyttelton, Thomas Hollis, Metastasio, Benedict XIV and Heinrich von Brühl were among his correspondents.''The Sicilienne and Rigaudon is one of the many pieces that violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler composed in the style of other composers. When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style. The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

Downloadable, Piano reduction. Duration 150 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q40439. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q40439). English.Like few other theatre works—The Magic Flute, A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Tippett’s first opera creates a wholly other place, one where human actions can be seen as in a tilted mirror. Since this is indeed an opera, the place, or dreamspace, is conjured by music: by luminescent music that, in its flowing abundance, radiant harmonies and evocative wind colourings, represents the natural world within which the characters have to integrate themselves. The central couple, those whose marriage is at first subverted and then gloriously celebrated, are Mark and Jenifer: he a young man of the earth and the senses, she a young woman of lofty spirituality. Each is only half a person, and before they can be united they have to be made whole, have to find within themselves an understanding of the other. Overseeing their mythic initiation and psychic healing are two Ancients, votaries of a temple on a wooded hilltop. As in the Mozart precedent, which the composer certainly had in mind, there is also a more workaday couple, Jack and Bella. The other principals are Jenifer’s businessman father King Fisher, who wants to stop the wedding for reasons of his own, and an Erda-like seer. There is also a dancer, Strephon, leading the exuberant ballet in which the orchestra completes the story of enlightenment and passion. It is ultimately a victory of love and, before love, self-knowledge.(Paul Griffiths).

Score and Parts. 58 pages. Kevin Riley #896807. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1307541). Without a gift for the Infant, the little drummer boy played his drum with approval from Jesus' mother, Mary, recalling, I played my best for him and He smiled at me.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW205-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Long before the tragic sinking of the Medusa, was the sinking of the French ship, The Medusa. The frigate Medusa was completed in 1806, launched in 1810, and saw action in the Napoleonic wars. In 1816, it set sail from French to its ultimate location in Senegal to repossess it from the British. Along with cargo, there were almost 400 people on board. What no one knew, however, was that there was an incompetent captain on board with dubious skills. The ship was caught in a storm off the coast of Mauritania. After being damaged from hitting rocks and multiple attempts to relaunch it, it couldn't move. Soon, it was discovered that there was a shortage of lifeboats. Most of the crew and some of the passengers made their way to the lifeboats, saving about 250 people. That left about 149 others on board. Crew members left on board scrambled to build a raft for the others. The raft was launched and tied to one of the lifeboats. The hope was that everyone would make it to land, almost 60 miles away. The horror came, when the captain ordered the raft to be cut loose, claiming, that it was slowing everyone else down. That left the raft survivors to their own devices.Multiple days at sea brought on starvation, death and disease. People starved to death, and acts of desperation came about, such as the weak, but alive, being thrown overboard, and even cannibalism. Many days later, when survivors were finally rescued, there were only 15 people left alive, with 5 of them dying soon afterwards. News of the disaster quickly reached France, where both the government and the people were thoroughly outraged. Newspapers covered the disaster, and eventually there were trials prosecuting the captain and the crew for negligence. This can be considered as the first documented sea disaster. In 1818, 27 year- old Theodore Gericault was so moved by this disaster, that he painted his masterpiece, The Raft of The Medusa. To this day, the painting, which is enormous in size and almost the size of the raft itself, hangs in the Louvre. This is my first attempt at program music. It was my hope that I captured the mood, the feeling, and above all, in all good program music, that my composition told the story.

Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Broadway,Musical/Show,Pop. 11 pages. RayThompsonMusic #518001. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.912070). Arranged standard wind quintet Your Mother Should Know is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1967 EP and LP Magical Mystery Tour. It was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney.Titled after a line in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey, its lyrical premise centres on the history of hit songs across generations. McCartney said he wrote it as a plea for generational understanding and respect for a mother's life experience. In the Magical Mystery Tour television film, the song serves as a big production number in the style of a 1930s Hollywood musical. Some commentators view the sequence as cultural satire, as the Beatles are seen dancing and dressed in white evening tails. Your Mother Should Know is in the music hall style, further to McCartney's earlier composition When I'm Sixty-Four.He first offered it as the Beatles' contribution to the Our World satellite broadcast in June 1967, but the band favoured John Lennon's All You Need Is Love for its social significance. The initial sessions for the song took place at Chappell Recording Studios in London towards the end of August. The group were visited there by their manager, Brian Epstein, a visit that marked the last time he joined them in the studio before his death on 27 August.

William Butler Yeats ends his short story The Adoration of the Magi with the narrator describing a centuries old Gaelic prayer… when I pray against the demons I repeat a prayer which was made I know not how many centuries ago to help some poor Gaelic man or woman who had suffered with a suffering like mine.â€The ancient prayer is presented for female voices and solo violin followed by The Magi introducing piano and choir. Yeats’ Magi “appear and disappear†in modern times, with “their ancient faces like rain-beaten stonesâ€. They continue to search and wait for Christ’s second coming with their “eyes still fixed, hoping, hopingâ€.  The Magi will remain “the unsatisfied ones†until they “find once more, the uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor.â€To explore all choral titles in College Choral Series please click here.

String orchestra & piano - SKU: IZ.OMW192-S Composed by Allen W. Menton. Score. 39 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #OMW192-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMW192-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Nineteenth-century philosophers coined the term hedgehog dilemma to describe the conundrum faced by hedgehogs huddling together for warmth during the winter. If they huddle too closely, they hurt each other with their spines. If they maintain greater distance, they become too cold. The challenge is to find an optimal distance, in which a few occasional pricks are endured in order to get some warmth. Philosophers viewed this situation as a metaphor for human relationships: close intimacy contains the risk of mutual harm. Inspired by the humorous movements of a friend's pet hedgehog, I imagined a fanciful scenario: a disco-loving hedgehog in search of a partner for the 1970's couples dance known as the hustle. Unfortunately, he and his partner keep sticking each other with their spines (represented by the pizzicato in the strings), and his partner abandons him. Our hero sadly contemplates his future, destined to dance alone. However, the music gives him courage, and he concludes with an exuberant dance solo.
