Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576905). Instrumental arrangement of my classical-folk crossover setting of Prévert's poem Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau (To paint the portrait of a bird). Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc). Based on the fairy tale “The Little Match Girl†by Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875), the famous Danish writer, the Beijing Ballet School of China commissioned An-Lun Huang to compose this ballet in 1977. The play was written by Zhang Dun-yi, and the choreographers were Wu Fu-kang and Huang Buo-hong. The premiere took place in Beijing in 1977. It was performed by the school and the Central Opera House Orchestra, conducted by Zheng Xiao-ying. The music is written in Nineteen Century-Romantic style with some strong Scandinavian flavor. Margot Fonteyn, one of the most important ballet dancers of our age, claimed that “the composer has composed the very, very, very good music for this ballet ! “ She then produced a movie of it, which has been broadcasted by the PBS of U.S.A. in early of eighties. Since the great success of the premiere, this ballet and its music have been widely performed and warmly received. A tape of it was also released in China. This is the story of the ballet: In a little Danish town in the nineteenth century, Betty, a little girl who lost her mother, was selling matches along the street during Christmas time. The sound of the church bell reminded her that the time was quite late, but she was unable to go home until she completed her job. An old man came to light the street lights. He gave her some money and left. Betty tried to sell her matches to a carriage, but the carriage just ran away. Snow fell, cold and hungry, she lit a match on the wall to warm herself. A group of “Fire Fairies†appeared. They danced around her and got her warm. Since they disappeared so quickly, Betty lit another match. She saw a big dining room with a beautiful Christmas tree and a lot of food. While some bus boys were handing her a piece of roasted goose, the typical Danish Christmas food, a nobleman in a portrait hanging on the wall suddenly moved. Everything disappeared again. Betty immediately lit the third match, a “Swan Lake†with a beautiful garden appeared. She met her mother with tears because the mother had passed away for years. Mother got a pair of little red shoes for her as the Christmas gift and danced with her. The “Portrait nobleman†brought the mother out of the scene. Everything was gone but the snow storm. The church bell sounded again, with the morning dawn, the old man came to extinguish the street lights. He found the frozen body of the little girl.

Finally, the music of Charles Koechlin is no longer an insider tip, but is being discovered for both the concert hall and the CD! With our issue we are now presenting a largely unknown facet of his work. Because hardly anyone knows that Koechlin turned to film at an advanced age. Although Koechlin was aware that there was no prospect of a cinematic implementation, he even designed a film scenario in 20 scenes in which he himself should appear in a double role! At the age of 66 he saw the actress Lilian Harvey as Princess Marie-Christine in Princesse in a Parisian movie theater . vos ordres. He was so enchanted that he made the little pieces of Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton for hercomposed & ndash. adorable miniatures that were not written as film music, but triggered by film experiences.

Of the unfinished compositions Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton, notated on two to four lines, we publish two volumes of twelve piano pieces each. Further booklets in other instrumentation will follow. With the seven planned issues Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton , Charles Koechlin's last unpublished works from the field of film will finally be accessible to posterity.

Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved.
