The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures. This work is about the coexistence of these two disparate but ever present realities, representing the best (unconditional love) and worst (war) aspects of the human condition. -Henry Mollicone Duration: 24' 50 Contents:1. English.Down to the River to Pray originates as an American gospel song with a simple message of faith and baptism, going 'down to the river.' However, it is thought that the song was composed by a slave, with reference to the river and the 'starry crown' (North Star) as a route and guide to freedom. Usually the song is performed a cappella, and slowly, prayerfully. However, the walking aspect of the lyrics might suggest a different approach – one of swing rhythm in duple meter. Here the focus is on the journey, the joy of the pilgrimage, and the hope for freedom. The accompaniment (either piano, or brass and percussion) plays a featured role, especially as rhythmic force. The song now becomes one of triumphant progression, hastening on the 'good old way!'-Gwyneth WalkerDuration: 3:30.

Published by Solitarius Press (A0.866387). The piece began in 2005 as a song dedicated to my wife, which remained unfinished because I was never satisfied with my lyrics. It eventually evolved into a work for concert band and has been adapted to other mediums including Horn ensemble. The opening text and title were inspired by the Navajo blessing may you walk in beauty which refersto the Blessing Way prayer. The title of this piece is a blessing, may the music be a blessing to you.It is originally written for a fairly large ensemble. There is enoughdoubling to adapt for a variety of instrumentations. It features solos for3 different parts. The primary countermelody is the bass line played bythe low horns at letter A and the main melody is introduced by the 1sthorn at letter B. The piece works most easily with 5-6 percussionistsbut may be done with as few as 3 by omitting the xylophone and havingthe same person cover the marimba and timpani parts.
