English.And It Came to Pass is a canticle (a musical setting of a Biblical text, in this case from the Gospel of Luke) designed like a triptych painting, but in music, in which the “left panel†or Prologue of the piece proclaims the promise of a Savior who will bring peace; the “center panelâ€â€”the body of the work—shares the story of the birth of this Savior, Jesus; and the “right panel†or Epilogue of the piece confirms that the speaker has now seen that salvation, that with the holy birth the promise has been fulfilled. This piece was first performed as part of a Christmas season “Ceremony of Carols†celebration service and, as such, was initially conceived for use in a religious service; it could also, however, be successfully performed within a concert setting, as it is a work of musical storytelling. He and his followers eventually arrive in the city at Passover, and during the meal they wonder IN THIS BREAD, IN THIS WINE, is there love for me? At first reluctant, Peter allows Jesus to wash his feet. Events turn against Jesus; he is arrested, and Peter is afraid. The taunt SURELY YOU MUST HAVE BEEN WITH HIM sees Peter denying he ever knew Jesus. Then their eyes meet across the courtyard, and Peter is devastated by his own failure. But even at such an awful time as this, THE LOOK OF LOVE contains acceptance and hope. WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY CRUCIFIED MY LORD? Peter wasn’t - he was in hiding along with many of the disciples. But after the resurrection, Jesus greets Peter and the others in Galilee: THIS IS THE PLACE – I am the Lord who comes to meet you here. Jesus asks: SIMON PETER, DO YOU LOVE ME? After being asked three times Peter reaches reality: Lord, you know everything … you know how much I love you! and receives the commission Feed my sheep. Peter and the disciples return to Jerusalem, and wait for the promised Holy Spirit. At Pentecost the Spirit comes, and as A CHOSEN PEOPLE, the followers of Jesus receive his power. Peter preaches, and thousands believe and respond JUST AS I AM … O Lamb of God I come. The Church is born and in the power of the Spirit begin WORKING IN THE FATHER’S BUSINESS, doing the things that Jesus did! Peter eventually arrives IN CAESAREA BESIDE THE SEA. He shares his vision with Cornelius and his household, and declares God has no favourites … you can be saved too … if you believe in Jesus. They believe, receive the power of the Spirit, and Gentiles also become members of the Chosen People, called out of darkness into wonderful light! Peter’s vision is fulfilled – the Gospel is for all who believe in Jesus. Peter declares HE IS THE STONE that the builders rejected … on Jesus the ROCK I will build my life! .

The composition pays homage to the serene beauty and cherished memories of Bear Point, Alabama, a place rich in history and personal significance to the composer, Donald Ashwander.The story behind Perdido Bay Moon Rag begins on a summer day when Donald, along with friends Edith and Edwin Zelnicker, found themselves on the picturesque Bear Point, Alabama. This tranquil peninsula on the shores of Perdido Bay held a special place in their hearts, as it was a locale where they had spent countless hours as children. They reminisced about their youth, playing beneath the majestic magnolia trees adorned with Spanish Moss and exploring ancient Indian mounds in search of pottery shards.It was during this nostalgic conversation that Edith, the elegant lady in question, suggested the title for a piano composition: Perdido Bay Moon Rag. Enchanted by the idea, Donald was determined to bring this vision to life. Upon returning to New York, he began crafting the piece, but it somehow eluded his grasp. Despite this initial challenge, he designed an appropriate cover for the composition and sent it to Edith and Edwin in Mobile.Over the years, Perdido Bay Moon Rag remained a fixture on Edith and Edwin's piano, a symbol of a cherished memory and unfulfilled promise. Edith confessed to her friend that she had attempted to play the piece but found it too complex, and so it remained unplayed.Time passed, and sadly, Edith fell ill. On a poignant visit to Mobile after Edith's passing, the atmosphere in their home was filled with her spirit. There, prominently displayed on the piano, lay Perdido Bay Moon Rag. In that moment, Donald knew that he needed to fulfill his promise and honor Edith's memory properly.With newfound determination and inspiration, Donald embarked on a journey to create a completely new composition that would capture the essence of Bear Point, Perdido Bay, and the moonlit nights they had cherished. This time, the music flowed effortlessly from his fingertips, as if guided by the memories and love he held for his dear friend.Perdido Bay Moon Rag is a testament to the enduring power of memories, friendship, and the creative process. It reflects the tranquility of Bear Point, the gentle sway of Spanish Moss, and the serenity of moonlit nights on the bay. Through its delicate melodies and intricate rhythms, the composition invites listeners to share in the deep emotions and fond recollections that inspired its creation.The final page of the sheet music contains special program notes by Donald Ashwander.
