The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is no 4 of the Sequenz Recordare At 130 measures, the Recordare (Remember) is the work's longest movement, as well as the first in triple meter the movement is a setting of no fewer than seven stanzas of the Dies irae. The form of this piece is somewhat similar to sonata form, with an exposition around two themes (mm. 1–37), a development of two themes (mm. 38–92) and a recapitulation (mm. 93–98). It suits the brass quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

This is my arrangement of No.5 Confutatis (From the accursed).It begins with a rhythmic and dynamic sequence of strong contrasts and surprising harmonic turns on tuba and horn the tenors and basses (Trumpets and trombone) burst into a forte vision of the infernal, on a dotted rhythm. The accompaniment then ceases , and trumpet 1 and tbn enter softly and sotto voce, (Voca me cum benedictis ()Call upon me with the blessed) with an arpeggiated accompaniment on horn and trumpet 2. Mvt.3 Rex tremundae summary A descending melody composed of dotted notes is played by to announce the Rex tremendae majestatis (King of tremendous majesty, i.e., God), who is called by powerful cries on the syllable Rex during the pauses. For a surprising effect, the Rex syllables fall on the second beats of the measures, even though this is the weak beat. The melodies adoptthe dotted rhythm, forming what Wolff calls baroque music's form of topos of the homage to the sovereign,or, more simply put, that this musical style is a standard form of salute to royalty, or, in this case, divinity. This movement consists of only 22 measures, but this short stretch is rich in variation: homophonic writing and contrapuntal passages alternate many times and finish on a quasi-unaccompanied choral cadence, landing on an open D chord (as seen previously in the Kyrie). Only the first eight bars of this piece was written by Mozart before his untimely death and was completed by Mozart’s student, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. This piece is great for ensembles looking for more dynamic and emotional involvement in their playing.

Requiem for the PequodCaptain Ahab’s story of obsession, and ultimate failure at the hands of Moby Dick is, of course, a well-worn cautionary tale. The tale of the Pequod, the ship that also met its demise as a result of Ahab’s actions is, in my eyes, worth examining. Requiem for the Pequod begins with Two Bells, tolled to mark the end of the day before Ahab and his crew set sail. The minor theme, played by a solo flute, sets the mood as restful, but somewhat ominous at the same time; treatments by the brass in chorale style and then the full ensemble follow. The next three sections beginning at letter A feature up-tempo variations on the main theme (Setting Sail) followed by a lively Sailor’s Shanty at letter D, both depicting carefree life at sea. A return to a melancholy minor theme at letter E portrays the tedium of Months at Sea as the Pequod and her crew travel toward their destination, unaware of the fate that awaits them. The penultimate section beginning at letter F (Fait Awaits) depicts the culminating battle, from the stirring of Moby Dick beneath the waves to the sinking of the Pequod and the death of Ahab and the crew, save Ishmael, who recounts the tragic tale in the final section Epilogue.Â

The choral-orchestral setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead in Latin is the best-known of his large works. Its focus is on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré's reasons for composing the work are unclear, but do not appear to have had anything to do with the death of his parents in the mid-1880s.
