This format allows for instruments such as the mountain dulcimer, Native American or transverse flute, penny whistle, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and so forth. Anyone can play shape-note music, even when Sacred Harp gatherings or “singings†are not easily accessible. The hymns in this collection are drawn from various classic shape-note sources like Southern Harmony (1835) and The Sacred Harp (1844). Presented in lead-sheet format (melody, chords, and lyrics), and written in keys accessible to all C instruments and several D instruments such as the penny whistle and mountain dulcimer, the material offers plenty of arrangements. Hymns can be sung by a soloist, in unison by a small group with chordal accompaniment, or a mixed ensemble.

This arrangement is in the key of F major and shows off the flutist's tone and lyricism in the middle register (plus a few notes). The harp part does not have any lever or pedal changes, but does include some special techniques (sons pinches and harmonics). The melody Beach Spring is also known as the hymns Lord Whose Love in Humble Service, See His Kingdom Come in Power, and The Heart of Christ. Includes a harp score and a separate flute part. Piano can be used in lieu of a harp by omitting any special techniques and playing the harmonic notes up an octave, very softly.

?The Morning Trumpet,? by Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879), is a camp revival song published in 1844 in the first edition of The Sacred Harp, a shape-note hymn book compiled by White and E.J. King (1821-1844). Shape-note tunes are often predominantly pentatonic, with harmonies that emphasize stark intervals of fourths and fifths. In four-part harmony, the tune is typically in the tenor voice. This arrangement preserves the tune but harmonizes it in a more contemporary style, and features alternating calls between first and second trumpet. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.1431203). “Interpretation of “Beach Spring” is an arrangement of this familiar American hymn tune, which originally appeared in the Sacred Harp. This arrangement is a modification of an earlier arrangement of the same tune that I wrote for organ. That arrangement featured the melody in the pedals using a 4’ solo stop. In writing this adaptation, I wanted to make the arrangement accessible for either piano solo or organ (manuals only). For that reason, the score shows no piano pedal instructions and it does not include organ stop suggestions. If played as a piano solo, pedaling in general with harmonic changes would work well. If played on the organ, quiet flute and string stops are appropriate for the accompaniment. A suggestion for the solo in the left hand might be an 8’ clarinet stop.

BEACH SPRING is a hymn tune attributed to Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1879), co-editor of The Sacred Harp shape-note hymnal, where the tune was published in 1844. Paired there with a text beginning Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, it has served as accompaniment for various other hymn texts since.Although attributed to White, the pentatonic tune (comprising five notes — degrees 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the major scale) is likely of folk origin. In this arrangement, the tune is presented three times: first by trombone with piano accompaniment; next by flute and piano; and after a modulation up one step, by trombone and piano in a new harmonization with descending chromatic bass line.An ideal choice for offertory or communion solo, BEACH SPRING may be performed by trombone and piano alone, as the flute melody in the second verse is present in the piano as well.©Copyright 2020 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music.
