Benedetto Giacomo Marcello (Italian: [beneˈdetto marˈtʃɛllo]; (31 July or 1 August 1686 – 24 July 1739) was an Italian composer, writer, advocate, magistrate, and teacher. Born in Venice, Benedetto Marcello was a member of a noble family and his compositions are frequently referred to as Patrizio Veneto. Although he was a music student of Antonio Lotti and Francesco Gasparini, his father wanted Benedetto to devote himself to law. Benedetto managed to combine a life in law and public service with one in music. In 1711 he was appointed a member of the Council of Forty (in Venice's central government), and in 1730 he went to Pola as Provveditore (district governor). Due to his health having been impaired by the climate of Istria, Marcello retired after eight years in the capacity of Camerlengo to Brescia where he died of tuberculosis in 1739. Benedetto Marcello was the brother of Alessandro Marcello, also a notable composer. On 20 May 1728 Benedetto Marcello married his singing student Rosanna Scalfi in a secret ceremony. However, as a nobleman his marriage to a commoner was unlawful and after Marcello's death the marriage was declared null by the state. Rosanna was unable to inherit his estate, and filed suit in 1742 against Benedetto's brother Alessandro Marcello, seeking financial support. Violist Noriko Futagami and multi-percussionist Bob (Robert) Schulz have played my music on many occasions, especially as members of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Noriko and Bob are a domestic pair and this is a musical Christmas present for them. True Confession. I have always been a fan (a secret and odd admirer) of Morton Feldman's music since I was a graduate student in composition, way back in the early 70's. When I say odd admirer I mean to say that I admire him from a distance, more out of respect than from any true emotional response to his music. Why is that? Well, his music and mine are so different ... But I respect his artistic integrity and guts!!! Anyway, The Viola in Bob's Life (of course, I stole the title from MF!!!) is in four movements. The viola is featured in all of them. Bob plays a different percussion instrument in each, except he has to do some clever overdubbing in the last because it is scored for marimba and drum set.1. Allegro ... for viola and marimba.2. Allegro ... for viola and drum set.3. Adagio ... for viola and vibraphone.4. English.Northwest Passage is a set of “poetic landscapes†that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Each sonic reflection (movement) combines to form a larger image, not unlike someone standing on a vista and seeing rivers, mountains, and prairies—each distinct, but part of one vast expanse.The work is scored for two versions: mixed chorus and piano, or mixed chorus, wind quintet, and string quartet. The harmonic vocabulary of the work maintains an uncomplicated, transparent (“organicâ€) approach in describing nature. The melodic vocabulary immediately pulls the listener's eye to the image, and rhythm is used as the underlying spark that is subtly ever changing and unpredictable. These three poetic landscapes should be performed without applause between movements.1. A Willow by the River|William Carlos Williams was a medical practitioner, pediatrician, and an avid writer. He wrote short stories, novels, plays, critical essays and, of course, poetry. The subjects of his writing were often “local†images, and he preferred to see the world “as it is,†without unnecessary trappings or “airs.†He was an important mentor to many younger poets of his day. “Willow Poem†(A Willow by the River) has no rhyme scheme but is comprised of fourteen individual lines. The willow is the focus of the poem (by its title and content) and how it never changes but will always “be.†The river represents, among other things, life quickly moving by and in a constant state of motion.2. Mountains|Marjorie Seiffert (who often used the pseudonyms Elijah Hay or Angela Cypher) led an incredibly full and balanced life. College introduced her to a world beyond her domestic and civic life and, as a result, she wanted to experience self-empowerment and independence. She prided herself in being a spouse, mother and maintaining a full slate of professional appearances and commissions for writing. Her poetry is vivid, keenly “visual,†and full of fast-paced, tightly woven ideas. “Mountain trails†(Mountains) was written at Glacier Park, Montana in September 1917.3. The Prairie|John Hay was an American statesman who was personal assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as U. S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to Great Britain. He was a cultivated man of letters and wrote poetry which was straightforward in design and delivery. Nature was often the subject of his creative output. -Z.
