5 Famous Songs by Bach for Bassoon Quartet

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1137855 Composed by Christian Petzold, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Martin Luther. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 44 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #738116. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1137855). This album contains 5 of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous and versatile pieces for bassoon quartet, all very well suited for the beginners who want to get to know the baroque repertoire. They are also suitable for performances at events such as: weddings, Christian and church ceremonies, Easter, and academic recitals or concerts. They can be used in music institutions and by teachers as repertoire material and study methods, either for performance or instrumental technique. This collection includes a totally free bonus for you to enjoy: Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God, a Renaissance sacred song for choir, which has been adapted for this set. 1: Air on the G String - The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. 2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. 4: O Jesulein süss, o Jesulein mild - The Jesulein süß, the Jesulein mild is an original traditional German choral melody for voice and continuous bass arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1735. With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering. 5: Minuet in G major - This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach. Bonus: A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther - Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism, where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem.

The Twelve Days of Christmas for String Quartet
Quatuor à cordes: 2 violons, alto, violoncelle
String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1…
(+)
String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1504108 Composed by English Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #1079563. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1504108). The 12 Days of Christmas is significant for its cultural and religious implications. This period, also known as Twelvetide, spans from December 25 (Christmas Day) to January 6 (Epiphany), marking the time between the birth of Jesus and the arrival of the Magi. Historical ContextThe tradition of the 12 days was formalized by the Council of Tours in 567, which proclaimed this time a sacred season, emphasizing the importance of celebration and reflection during this period. Each day is associated with various saints and religious observances, making it a time of spiritual significance for many Christians. The Carol and Its MeaningThe well-known carol The Twelve Days of Christmas lists a series of increasingly extravagant gifts given on each of the twelve days. Although it is often perceived as a simple festive song, there are theories about its deeper meanings. One popular but debunked theory suggests that the gifts symbolize elements of the Christian faith, serving as a secret catechism for Catholics during times of persecution. However, this interpretation lacks substantial historical evidence and is considered more of a myth than fact. Cultural PracticesCulturally, the 12 Days of Christmas have evolved into various traditions, including gift-giving, feasting, and festive gatherings. In some cultures, gifts are exchanged on January 6, celebrated as Three Kings Day, while others may celebrate throughout twelve days. The carol likely originated as a memory game for children, intended to be fun and engaging rather than a severe religious text. In summary, the 12 Days of Christmas represent a blend of religious significance, historical tradition, and cultural celebration, making it an enduring aspect of the Christmas season.

Saxophone Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Baritone Saxophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1137884 Composed by Christian Petzold, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Martin Luther. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 44 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #738138. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1137884). This album contains 5 of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous and versatile pieces for baritone quartet, all very well suited for the beginners who want to get to know the baroque repertoire.

Guthrie: I Saw Three Ships for String Quartet

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491680 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Holiday,Traditional. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #1068354. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1491680). I Saw Three Ships is a traditional English Christmas carol that has gained popularity for its melodic simplicity and festive themes. Here are some key points about its significance:Historical ContextOrigins: The earliest known printed version of I Saw Three Ships dates back to the 17th century, with a notable publication by William Sandys in 1833. The song was likely known earlier under As I Sat On a Sunny Bank, particularly popular in Cornwall.Cultural Relevance: The carol reflects a period when maritime themes were prominent in English culture, coinciding with the Age of Exploration. This context made the imagery of ships particularly resonant for audiences of the time.Symbolism and InterpretationThe Ships: The lyrics describe three ships arriving on Christmas Day, which has led to various interpretations. One common belief is that the ships symbolize the three vessels that carried the relics of the Magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Alternatively, they may represent the camels used by the Magi, often referred to as ships of the desert due to their role in transporting the wise men to Bethlehem.Bethlehem's Geography: The song mentions ships sailing into Bethlehem, which raises questions, as the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea, about 20 miles away. This discrepancy has prompted interpretations that focus on the symbolic rather than literal meaning of the ships.Musical LegacyPopularity: I Saw Three Ships has been embraced by various artists across genres, with notable recordings by musicians such as Sting, Glen Campbell, and Sufjan Stevens. Its enduring appeal makes it a staple in Christmas music repertoires.Lyric Variations: Different song versions have emerged over the years, reflecting local traditions and interpretations. Some variations even change the context from Christmas to other celebrations, demonstrating the carol's flexibility in cultural contexts. In summary, I Saw Three Ships is significant as a cherished Christmas carol and a cultural artifact that encapsulates historical maritime themes, religious symbolism, and the evolution of folk music traditions.

The First Noel for String Quartet

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian, Repertoire, Christmas. Score, Set of Parts. 7 pages. Published by jmsgu3
Score: 3 pages, String parts 1 page each. The First Noel arranged for Alto Sax & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.<br> <br> Origins<br> The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning “Christmas.” Therefore “the First Noel” translates as “the First Christmas.” First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the “Carols Ancient and Modern” songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: String Quartet Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive.<br> <br> Stainer<br> Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships.<br> <br> Diatonic Function<br> The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends.<br> <br> Political Context<br> The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.Score: 3 pages, String parts 1 page each. Guthrie: Carol of the Bells for String Quartet

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489376 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #1066238. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1489376). Carol of the Bells is a well-known Christmas carol with a rich history rooted in Ukrainian culture. Here are the key points to understand about this iconic piece:Original Composition: The melody of Carol of the Bells is derived from a Ukrainian folk song called Shchedryk, which Mykola Leontovych composed in 1914. Shchedryk, which translates to The Little Swallow, was originally a New Year's song celebrating the arrival of spring and good fortune.Cultural Context: The song's origins are tied to Ukrainian traditions, where it was sung by young girls going door-to-door on New Year's Eve, wishing families prosperity and good luck for the coming year. The swallow in the song symbolizes the arrival of spring and abundance.English Lyrics: In 1936, American composer Peter Wilhousky adapted the melody for Christmas, writing new lyrics that emphasized bells and Christmas cheer themes. This version transformed Shchedryk into Carol of the Bells, quickly gaining popularity in the United States and becoming a staple of Christmas music.Musical Structure: The carol features a distinctive four-note ostinato and is metrically bistable, allowing listeners to perceive the rhythm differently. It is typically arranged in 3/4 time and has a lively and festive feel, contributing to its widespread appeal.Widespread Adaptations: Carol of the Bells has been recorded in over 150 versions across various musical genres, including classical, jazz, rock, and heavy metal. Notable adaptations include those by Mannheim Steamroller and John Williams, which have helped to cement its status as a Christmas classic.Cultural Significance: The song's association with Christmas has overshadowed its Ukrainian roots, leading to a complex relationship with its cultural identity. In recent years, there has been a movement to reclaim Shchedryk as a significant part of Ukrainian heritage, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.Modern Recognition: The song is frequently featured in films, television shows, and holiday concerts, making it a beloved part of the Christmas season. Its ability to evoke joy and nostalgia resonates with audiences worldwide. In summary, Carol of the Bells is not just a Christmas carol but a piece with deep cultural roots and a fascinating history of transformation from a Ukrainian folk song to a global holiday favorite.

String Quartet String Quartet,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1093008 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by ANDERSSON. Baroque,Christmas,Easter,Sacred,Wedding. 10 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #697105. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1093008). This easy arrangement for violin quartet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus.

The First Noel: Piano Quartet Version brings new harmony in the final verse for more energy and drive.StainerOrganist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870s. Stainer is, above all, famous for his songbook entitled Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an essential catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other favorite Stainer arrangements from this book include What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships.Diatonic FunctionThe melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice and then follows a variation refrain. All three words of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song an open-ended feeling – like maybe it never ends.Political ContextThe Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into a common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in the church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk melodies were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.

Score: 3 pages, String parts 1 page each. The First Noel arranged for Alto Sax & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Piano Quartet Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491580 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Holiday,Traditional. 13 pages. Jmsgu3 #1068280. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1491580). Here We Come A-Wassailing is a traditional English Christmas carol with roots that likely extend back to the mid-19th century, if not earlier. The exact authorship of the carol is unknown. The song is associated with the tradition of wassailing, which involves going door-to-door singing in exchange for food and drink. This practice predates Christianity and was part of mid-winter celebrations. The term wassail originates from the Anglo-Saxon greeting waes hael, meaning be in good health. This greeting evolved into a toast, with one person saying was hail and another responding drinc hail while passing around a communal bowl of a drink made from mulled ale or mead, spices, and apples, known as wassail. Wassailing has two primary forms: one that occurs post-Christmas, often associated with Twelfth Night, and another that takes place before Christmas. The latter involves singing carols and sharing wassail from a bowl. At the same time, the former includes rituals to encourage fertility in orchards, such as singing to trees and offering cider-soaked toast. The carol Here We Come A-Wassailing has several variations, including Here We Come A-Caroling and Here We Come A-Christmasing, each with different lyrics but similar themes of merriment and well-wishing for the New Year.

Goldberg was reported to have studied with both J.S. Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, J.S. Bach’s eldest son, though the periods of study are not known; Goldberg may have studied with J.S. Bach as early as 1737, shortly after Keyserlingk recognized his talent in Danzig, and Goldberg may have studied with W.F. Bach at any time before 1745. [Wikipedia]

Brahms: Fugue, WoO 8, for String Quartet
Quatuor à cordes: 2 violons, alto, violoncelle
String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1…

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1416898 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 17 pages. Jmsgu3 #998489. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1416898). The Fugue in A-flat minor, WoO 8, is one of the early organ works by Brahms, composed around 1856-57. It is an intense, brooding fugue published without an opus number. The fugue is part of a small set of four early organ pieces by Brahms, including the chorale prelude and fugue O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid (WoO 7). These early organ works demonstrate Brahms' mastery of counterpoint at a young age. While Brahms did not have a close personal relationship with the organ, the genre of the chorale prelude allowed him to pay homage to his musical heritage, following the conventions of the form by paraphrasing and elaborating on pre-existing Lutheran chorale melodies. The Fugue in A-flat minor is considered one of the most significant and high-quality of Brahms' early organ works. It was eventually assigned the posthumous opus number 122, which is still known today. So, in summary, the Fugue in A-flat minor is an essential early organ work by Brahms that demonstrates his mastery of counterpoint, even though the organ was not his primary instrument. It is considered a significant and high-quality piece within Brahms' overall organ output.
