This is the twentieth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view. Its lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates and its music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met.In 1893, at the age of 33, Bates, an English professor at Wellesley College, had taken a train trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach at Colorado College. The American Revolution. O’Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. O’Connor later adapted his piece for violin and piano. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. Published by Jesus Martinez Music (A0.1030742). PROGRAM NOTES: The Spear of Destiny is titled and inspired by the supposed spear that was used to kill Jesus Christ. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine' opened his centres in vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not morn for me; I shall have influenced history more than any other German. Hitler became enamored with the Spear of Destiny, which claimed it called to him. Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

First recorded and made popular by Jackie DeShannon, it was released on April 15, 1965, on the Imperial label after a release on sister label Liberty records the previous month was canceled. It peaked at number seven on the US Hot 100 in July of that year. In Canada, the song reached number one. The song's success caught the two songwriters completely by surprise, since they were very aware of the controversy and disagreements among Americans about the Vietnam War, which was the subtext for David's lyrics. Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829 – 1869) was an American virtuoso pianist known around the world for his performances as well as his signature work, The Banjo (1855). This piece aims to replicate the characteristics of a banjo but on an unaltered piano. One of the many difficulties of performing this work on piano is the repetition of notes, a task much more comfortable for the strumming of a banjo player. The Banjo also incorporates a reference to the popular song Camptown Races by Stephen Foster, a highly regarded composer of the time. For this arrangement I followed many of Gottschalk’s own articulation, style, or dynamic choices. I took liberty with a few articulation choices, favoring ones more suitable for the tuba and euphonium. Dynamic variances are meant to be extreme and sudden but performers are encouraged to use them only as guidelines for their own interpretations.

Halevi Songs is a 3-movement song cycle, composed in 2002. It is a setting of three poems (in English translation of the original Hebrew) of Judah Halevi, who was a Jewish scholar and poet who lived in Spain in the Middle Ages. The three movements are I. The Mirror, II. Do the Tears Know?, and III. Calm After the Storm. Each is just under three minutes. The total duration of the piece is between 8.5 and 9 minutes. The audio clip is from the third movement, in a performance of the sextet version of this piece. A complete recording is available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The performers are Dianne Smith (soprano), Janet Polvino (flute), Isabelle Boggs (clarinet), Bob Ferrier (guitar), Craig Bitterman (percussion), and Joyce Crouch (piano). Composer's Notes: The translation of the first poem, The Mirror, is by the 19th century American poet Emma Lazarus, most famous for her familiar words engraved on the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poorâ?¦ There has been some interesting academic discussion concerning this poem. It is generally attributed to Halevi, but some scholars now believe it may have been written by someone else. (I have also seen the translation attributed to someone else.) The second poem, Do the Tears Know? was originally a tombstone inscription for one of Haleviâ??s friends. This setting was written to honor my father, Harold Allan Brill, who passed away in January, 2000. The third poem, Calm After the Storm, is actually the second half of a longer poem about a sea voyage. The three songs are meant to be performed continuously, without a break in between.
