Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is possibly the most recognized work in the classical repertoire. There are so many adjectives to describe this piece of genius: Stately, majestic, serious, solemn, moving, noble, languid, stoic, enduring and sublime. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Remembrance Day services. Jim Tempest's arrangement for moderately advanced performers is scored for an 11-part brass ensemble of: 4 Trumpets in B-flat (includes a Piccolo Trumpet part up to a high C concert), 2 Horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba; included are substitute horn parts for Trumpet 3 and Euphonium (this part may also be performed on the Trombone).

This early symphony (No. 8) was composed in 1761, the last of a set of three - 'Le Matin', 'La Midi' and 'Le Soir' (Morning, Mid day & Evening). The scoring was similar to the Bach Brandenburg concertos in that the wind players (flute, 2 oboes, bassoon & 2 horns) were treated as soloists along with the leaders of the string sections - except the violas. The musical style however, was remarkably well along the road to Haydn's Classical style. The four movements, Allegro molto, Andante,Menuetto & Trio and La tempesta - Presto which represents a storm. Haydn must have been very pleased with the last movement as he used the broken chord theme which first appears in the flute in his final work, The Seasons, again to represent a storm.The arrangement provides rewarding parts for a quintet of players of advanced intermediate standard and above.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810965). Bach's Little Fugue in G minor K. 578 for organ was written in the first decade of the 18th century while he was working at Arnstadt. It is one of his best known works and has been arranged for numerous types of ensembles including a full-blown one for symphony orchestra by Leopold Stokowski. Mr. Tempest has arranged a great setting of this work for 11-part Brass Ensemble with the following instrumentation: Trumpet in D, 2 B-flat Trumpets, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba. This work is about 4 minutes in length and appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
