Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981218). Composer’s Notes In my parents' library there was an assortment of very old books that I used to leaf through while home for holidays. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. From my sideHe smoothed the pale and withered leaves, and dyedMy lips in Helicon. Written in 2016, Michelangelo Rodriguez’s 12 Etudes in the Study of the Color Wheel is a series of piano etudes that depicts the color wheel and the relationship the 12 colors have to each other. The primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, act as the three base etudes of the set. By mixing the rhythms, motifs, and articulations of the Red, Yellow, and Blue etudes, the secondary etudes are made. Orange, Green, and Violet are then further mixed using the same technique to form the tertiary etudes of Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, and Red-Violet. These 12 etudes are a direct inspiration from the neurological phenomenon of Synesthesia, and using it to combine different mediums of art. The Island is the sister vignette another piano piece I wrote, Fives, now focusing on color as a design principle instead of rhythm. Since sound is heard from 20 to 20k Hz and light is perceived from about 375 to 750 THz, there is a huge speed difference between the two kinds of waves, but overall, waves are waves. My synesthetic view of reality allows me to see pictures and colors when I hear tones. To me, C is White, Db is Orange, D is Yellow, Eb is Seafoam, E is Green, F is Brown, Gb is Red, G is Grey, Ab is Violet, A is Pink, Bb is Gold, and B is Blue. There is some logical flow to my chromatic rainbow, but admittedly it’s a little interpretive. It’s just what I see! Associating colors with notes is a personalized thing; two of my friends both have perfect pitch yet each perceive unique chromatic schemes in their minds for tones, which also differ from mine. This project shows how I use my mental color wheel to musically paint a stormy island sunset.

They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes. Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian. I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal. My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

NGC 4907 The barred spiral galaxy known as NGC 4907 shows its starry face from 270 million light-years away to anyone who can see it from the Northern Hemisphere. II. Interstellar Comet Borisov On Aug. 30, 2019, when amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov gazed upward with his homemade telescope, he spotted an object moving in an unusual direction. Now called 2I/Borisov, this runaway point of light turned out to be the first confirmed comet to enter our solar system from some unknown place beyond our Sun’s influence. III. Rose Galaxies The image shows a large spiral galaxy apparently attached to another one by a swirl of stars – a rose-like effect caused by the gravitational pull of the galaxy below it. The sprinkling of blue jewel-like points across the top of the larger galaxy is the combined light from clusters of intensely bright and hot young blue stars.
