In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The 11th song, O Primavera extolls the virtues of young love in the spring, when the humours are rising.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. This is a love poem describing the virtues of a young lady. The language is flowery and obtuse, but none-the-less beautiful. The first line translates as Gentle midst the hidden thorns. It is obvious that Monteverdi is enlarging his scope with this trio for all male voices (2 tenors and a bass) as the soloists, with a more complex accompaniment that many of the previous songs. The accompaniment is complex enough to deserve it's own ensemble, so I have arranged it à 7 as follows: 1 - Part 1 in F/Eb (Tenor 1) - Horn 2 - Part 2 in F/Eb (Tenor 2) - Horn 3 - Part 3 in C/Bb (Bass) - Euph/Trom/Barit 4 - Part 4 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 5 - Part 5 in Bb - Trumpet/Cornet 6 - Part 6 in C/Bb - Trom/Euph/Barit 7 - Part 7 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass

Three uplifting solos for oboe with Piano accompanimentCompassion As the title suggests, this piece should be played with warmth the middle departure showing a little more anxiety before a return to the optimism of the opening theme. Apart from this, there is no formal structure. There should be a marked contrast between the flowing, lyrical passages of the opening section and the crisp staccato in the middle descending arpeggios.  Although the tempo indicates quickness, the feel should be one of animation rather than pace. The dynamic range is not great but should be accurately observed with clear contrasts. Mercy Much more of a duet for oboe and piano rather than a solo. This has a yearning, minor aspect with a contrasting few bars of a more comfortable major feel at the end of the middle section. The lively tempo should be driven through the whole piece with only a slight letup in the final two measures. Although written in waltz time, this is no dance being loaded with underlying energy and emotion. The dynamics remain fairly loud with only the expected variation in line with the phrasing.Tenderness This piece, written in the middle to high register, has a simple structure being a stable melody with variations and ornaments. Where the piano accompaniment has the theme it should be allowed to show through.  As the title suggests this should be played with a gentle lilt but not over-sentimental. Aim for a warm to mellow texture with comforting sounds. There is a general but slight crescendo throughout the piece.

Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethovenâs Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove thatâs just began to overflow its bubbles.âThe first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out. âThe second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen Kingâs The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena.
