By Mike Strand, ASCAPThis is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance: 1.You may come here to eat and to drink.Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. They have the moves to show off our licks. They came here to dance! Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by: Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why: The doghouse amps are turned up high. They get in there, and tear up the floor! And they don’t care if their feet get sore. 3. Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not. They came here to dance!4. Bridge again, then:Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not.They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,They came here to dance! This solo will challenge a learning soloist looking to get on stage with something atypical.In medieval times, the lord of the land would arrange a feast to be had immediately after some special occasion, like a battleground victory, a wedding, or a coronation. Only the most prestigious were invited, and the feastgoers were expected to dress and behave elegantly, to reflect the culture of the time. The feast would have up to six courses and would last for hours on end; some of the main courses imitated theatrical performances. When listening or performing, imagine being in a large, bustling hall of finely-dressed men and women to a wide variety of colorful and delicious delicacies---and you haven't even reached the main course!Please enjoy!

I put it in the key of Db as I was transitioning from Canon in D (which I always play in Db). I added the repeat in case the piece needed to be longer, so feel free to repeat as necessary or just skip ahead to the coda as I did in the video. Have fun!

This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the ?combined? piece was Mditation sur le Premier Prlude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod?s original arrangement transposed Bach?s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Lopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called "Schwencke measure" (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a ?harmonic weakness? (or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.
Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.

This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn
ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in
recitals or concert encores. This arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick has been transposed into B
flat to feature the middle to upper range of the saxophone. In is ideal for the intermediate
player who can manage a top ?b? with confidence.
In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling
keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major,
BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of
the ?combined? piece was Mditation sur le Premier Prlude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod?s
original arrangement transposed Bach?s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was
scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company
Jacques-Lopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria
(Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.978843). A Fanfare for three Bb Trumpets & Timpani. This was arranged from an old melody of unknown origin, for Eb Cavalry Trumpets and Kettledrums of the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars Band, a former Northern Irish Regiment within the British Army; whose Colonel in Chief was HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Winston Churchill was a young officer in the regiment, before the amalgamation of the 4th & 8th Hussars, to form the ’Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars’’. All cavalry regiments of the line, have a team of Cavalry Trumpets, who under the ’Trumpet Major’, play at 11am each day outside regimental headquarters, for the Regiment. Traditionally the fanfare ’stables’ would be played first; followed by another fanfare of the ’’Trumpet Major’s’’ choice. In cavalry regiments there is often a drum horse, on which the two timpani are positioned and played. An example would be the Queen’s Own Hussars, who for many years had a fine old drum horse, trained not to panic when the kettledrums were being played fortissimo! During the day, one trumpeter is on duty, and plays various trumpet calls throughout the day to signal important happenings in the regiment’s daily schedule of events. For example, Reveille is at 0630, Mess call at 0700, Mess call 1230, Guard mount 1800, Officers dress for dinner 2000, finishing with last post at 2200! There are also trumpet calls for fire, war and mucking out the horses! One morning when I was on trumpet duty in Germany at the tender age of 18, I woke up late, and just managed to play the ’’Reveille’’ trumpet call out of my bedroom window, in an effort not to be ’charged’ for missing a call! The equivalent in the Infantry would be the bugle, which is also used as a method of signaling to the regiment. This fanfare works well for three Bb trumpets and timpani. Eb cavalry trumpets are often written in the key of C, and harmonically there is no third on chord V due to the harmonics of the instrument, and the fact that they have no valves; giving a bare sounding chord. The trills in the first part are lip trills, on Bb trumpet, simply play a lip trill using the valves 1 & 3. The most famous Eb cavalry trumpeters in the British Army, are undoubtedly the trumpeters of the household cavalry, who perform in spectacular golden uniforms, complete with riding hats, at the state opening of parliament. Don’t forget Eb cavalry trumpeters are musicians from the band,(they could be clarinettists),assigned to trumpet for two to three years, not so good for your embouchure!! So when you hear a mis-pitched note in future, you know that the trumpeter could be a bassoonist, doing his or her very best.

Playing a piece of music is not the same as mastering it. Surviving a performance is not the same as playing with confidence. There is no joy in being vulnerable to embarrassing mistakes. It is no way to live. You deserve a set of instructions (this edition) that enables you to master your performance, play with confidence and beauty, not an edition which blocks your access.Clair de Lune is so familiar that it is hard to appreciate just how revolutionary it (and Debussy) are. The word revolutionary is overused, so we fail to realize that Clair de Lune is difficult to play largely because it was difficult to notate. If the faculty of the Paris Conservatory didn't understand or appreciate Debussy, why would we expect the staff of a publishing company (as competent as they were) to understand the demands of his music. Debussy broke the boundaries of conventional piano notation. That means contradictions and ambiguity, which must be addressed.A note about fingering: where and why it is or is not presented. I've done my best to prepare an edition of this music that will enable the Intermediate Classical pianist to prepare and perform this masterpiece. My goal is to include information that the pianist needs, but does not already know. For Claire de Lune, some passages are dependent upon specific hand/fingering solutions, while other passages are either (1) equally playable with different fingering, or (2) only playable by what essentially becomes known as a self-evident solution. For example, m9-24, and m61-62, fall into this category. Octaves can only practically be played with fingers 1 and 5. I provide a lot of finger numbers, but that is not the same as creating an edition that can be played without significant staff reading. The premise is that an intermediate musician should have access to advanced material--that is a musician is motivated to play pieces one level more advanced. Attempting to bridge more than one level is not my goal.
