Shall We Gather at the RiverRobert Lowry, 1864Easy intermediate PIANOFrom the author/composer of How Can I Keep from Singing, Low in The Grave He Lay/Christ Arose, All the Way My Savior Leads Me, We’re Marching to Zion and I Need Thee Every Hour comes this classic hymn of longing for heaven, worship and fellowship by Robert Lowry, 1864.On a ministry visit to a grieving family he was asked, “Pastor, we have parted at the river of death. Will we meet again by the river of life?” Lowry assured her from Revelation 22:1 they they would. Then, later that afternoon he wrote both the words and the music of Shall We Gather at the River.The arrangement may serve as well as an early goal for a progressing piano student as for an intermediate to advanced player this coming Sunday.The intro announces the tune and calls the first line of the chorus to mind. After setting the meditative mood the first stanza is presented in right hand melody with left hand accompaniment that only occasionallyis rhythmically active beyond beat three. Then, the easily playable key change takes the vision to the bank of the “shining river” by way of a brief, flowing left hand figuration. Around the Bend is a journey of tranquility, adventure, and discovery down a section of the Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem, PA. The first section of the music that appears throughout the piece is a simple melody that is reminiscent of a simple art song. It represents the river flowing along peacefully on a beautiful day. Occasionally, we come across an area where the water hits a small obstacle that causes the water to change its path and speed. We hear this as violent 16th note interruptions in the music. The river then returns to its natural flow and pace. Further along we encounter a small waterfall area with rapids and obstacles. The music cascades and has a rhythmic drive representing the rapids and the swift moving waters. After we have traversed the rapids, we return to the calm waters of the river as it continuously flows peacefully. The next portion of our journey is inspired by a specific and unique section of the Monocacy, where we find the hidden ivy. Trees surround the creek. When looking into them, at a certain angle, you will find a tree covered in ivy hidden amongst the other trees. When we reach this point in our journey, the music starts off mysteriously as though looking through the trees. When we find the hidden ivy, we are greeted by a majestic melody that reflects this hidden beauty. The piano plays a rising arpeggio repeatedly, reflecting the ivy’s goal to grow higher and closer to the sky. Once we pass the ivy, we return to the peacefully flowing river. We approach a bend in the river that we cannot see beyond. There is a bit of trepidation, but as we start to go around the bend, everything ends peacefully, and we know everything will be fine. The river will keep moving and we will survive. For Cello & Piano.

She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. Grey Skies over the Dee We’re in the highlands of Scotland again here – and there are ‘Scotch Snaps’ in bars 2, 6, 14, etc. This is film music for a movie playing in your imagination. I have a picture of standing all alone on a bare hill covered in heather, the wind blowing in my hair, and grey skies reflected in the river Dee flowing at the foot of the hill. There’s a heroic feeling beginning in bar 16 – are we in the Jacobite rebellion, perhaps? Use your imagination!

Deep River, perhaps the best known and best-loved of all spirituals, referred to the slaves' yearning for freedom and the rivers that would have to be crossed to get to the Promised Land. They thought of these mighty waters as rivers flowing into distant horizons. Campgrounds may refer to secret worship services. They sang longingly: Deep River, My home is over Jordan, Deep River, Lord, I want to cross over into campground. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. The score is professionally notated, easy to read and clean. This song is also referred to as The River Is Wide. The arrangement uses a more modernized harmonic piano accompaniment that enhances the beautiful melody performed throughout by the flute.  The piano exchanges some thematic material in the second verse to add  interest and musicality. Overall, together the two instruments make for a lovely mature, and satisfying sound. This traditional Scottish song has been done by many great artists and is also used in Church with alternate lyrics. After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to three parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. However altos or baritones could probably sing the melody, as the highest notes are likely still contained within their upper range. Thus the piece could be performed as a solo for altos or baritones. Though the melody shifts, a bit, from soprano to alto, it is easily heard in continuity. Thus, intuitively, the audience, or congregation, will clearly hear the melody, and be easily able to sing along. The Lead Sheet (with chord symbols) and scores provided here, contain the three vocal parts, violin, viola and piano. With the chord symbols provided, add guitar, bass, etc. As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. My intent has always been to take a fresh look at familiar material, to make something both challenging and rewarding for the performers involved and still retain the audience connection found in doing the Old Songs. Shall We Gather is an adaptation of the old hymn Shall We Gather at the River by Robert Lowry (1826 – 1899). The calm flowing power of the river runs through this arrangement. As the river flows and changes, so does its reflection in the music of strength and the enduring capacity of faith. This arrangement is substantive and expressive for both the vocalist and the pianist. Suitable for recital or worship. It is expressive and passionate, requiring an established singer. The accompaniment is at times straight forward and at others requiring a confident hand in the more ornate and robust passages.
