This large-scale concert solo projects a magical atmosphere redolent of the landscapes and characters of J. R. R. Tolkien's literary classic, The Hobbit. Although this is not program music in a strict sense, Ford, like Tolkien, draws freely upon historical materials to construct a timelessly colorful fantasy world full of richly contrasting episodes. Significantly, the rondo form of this movement returns home thematically again and again, just as the Hobbits are only too happy to return to their beloved Shire after their many adventures in Middle Earth. The full title of Tolkien's work is The Hobbit or There and Back Again. (Incidentally, Hindemith gave a similar title to his 1927 opera, Hin und Zurück-There and Back, which has nothing to do with Tolkien, Hobbits, or epic fantasies!)

Its 2 melodies span 36 years. The first tune came to me when I was 8 years old and on holiday in the Co.Donegal town of Buncrana, west Ireland. Back then there was a small shop on Buncrana’s high street that sold everything from milk to DIY tools. And the name of the shop was “John Thinn And Sonâ€. I thought this was an awesome name and I remember the shop owner, the real Mr. Thinn, being a lovely kindly, rather shy and gentle man. And this inspired my childhood mind’s character of Mr.Thinn the magic-toy maker.  The 2nd theme arrived in September 2011 as soon as I had decided that Mr.Thinn’s first tune had waited long enough and now needed to find a permanent home. Once again writing for the wonderful Banda di musica has given me a unique chance to release an old and very special melody that has lain neglected and home-less for over 3 decades. The resulting piece is light hearted, fun and in a simple ABA form.There are 2 arrangements;No. 1 – School Arrangement ; Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No. 2 – Standard Arrangement ; Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double BassThere are a few violin and cello solos throughout which are to be played by the section leaders. These are of moderate difficulty.

This is my third new sonata for French horn. it has three movements as follows: Movement 1: Dance It begins with a crotchet theme which forms the basis of the rest of the movement. The opening should be stately and measured, but not slow. The echoes should be as quiet as possible for each statement of the opening motif. I have made a lot of use of rhythmic features in this movement. After the Maestoso, the 12/8 section is in the nature of a jig, with lots of repeated pitches and very rhythmical There's much use of syncopation. After I have played around with these ideas (intervals based on the opening) there is a more legato tune, also based on the opening music, but in a grander style and marked nobilmente. This is almost a processional, and leads to a reprise of the jig motifs in a new mode and with modifications to the rhythm. The second movement of this sonata is a set of 3 variations on an original tune. The melody is quite hymn-like and needs to be played as such. Very legato, with very slight tongue. Variation 1 is an 8th note variation, with a slight increase in tempo to help it to flow. The player will need to pay close attention to the written phrasing so as not to lose the theme. This variation is p throughout. Variation 2 is a triplet/sextuplet variation, again with a slight increase in tempo. This variation has turns, which I have written out in ossias above to be clear how I would like it to be played. Variation 3 is a semiquaver and glissando variation, requiring good tongue technique and clear phrasing. Breathing should be easy as I have made provision for breaths to mark the ends of phrases. Please don't change these! Finally, there is a restatement of the original theme with slight adaptations to bring the movement to a quiet finish. The third and final movement of the sonata is a rondo. The opening music keeps returning throughout the length of the movement. It comprises a stuttering rhythmic phrase with alternating upwards and downwards scales which gradually build up throughout the opening of the movement. Each time the ritornello idea returns it has been altered in some way. Between the ritornelli are slightly less frenetic sections of cantabile melodic ideas which hark back to both the first and second movements as well as referencing the scalic ideas from the third movement. Although the music is fast, it should be playable without resorting to triple tonguing.

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

With classic ragtime syncopation in the primo part against a 'stride' style in the secondo, this duet is sure to be a popular addition to any recital programme.For the introduction, the primo (perhaps the mouse?) starts things off with a bright opening statement that is answered by the secondo player (the cat?), and then the chase begins!During the opening theme, the primo has an opportunity to tease the cat with a cheeky staccato 'interjection'. Just before this high note is an acciaccatura grace note, which should be played as quickly as possible beforehand.The middle section then modulates to G minor for a variation on the theme, after which a rallentando culminates to a brief pause in the game. There is a break (a caesura) after the pause, so try to leave a good couple of seconds of suspense before launching back into the original theme a tempo.Keep and eye out for staccato and tenuto notes, which will help to communicate the playful feel of the piece.The duet ends with a call-and-response between the primo and secondo, then a crescendo to the ending hits - with a cheeky acciaccatura grace note from the mouse, of course :).

Published by Alex Schwarte (A0.1455537). I have been working on To Rise Again for about a year since the passing of several close family members. As with any long-term struggle, some days are easier than others, and some days it is hard to do much of anything at all. Walking through hard days, this piece is about mental health, the struggles that you face, and on the most difficult days, what it takes to rise again. Despair: This movement opens with what I call the despair motif. This motif consists of seven notes and will return throughout the piece, reminding us of uncertainty and darkness. The middle of the movement includes a build-up leading to a complete panic attack, featuring cluster chords in the piano and extreme volumes and articulation in the trombone. Finally, a quasi-march leads us to the end, where we sink to the lowest and angriest point. Support: This tranquil and shimmering movement evokes the other side of grief and depression: the people around you. In the dark moments, these people can become pillars of aid and light. Even with support, there are moments of darkness and uncertainty, but support will always be there. Musically, this movement features numerous color tones and aims to create an emotionally understanding and steady atmosphere. The opening trombone line (the support motif) represents tender support and is used numerous times in the next movement. Overcome: The final movement opens with a haunting atmosphere created by plucked piano strings. The first normal piano entrance is the Rumbling motif: the feeling of the soul exerting its will to be free but not quite making it. Throughout the rest of the movement, the trombone and piano go back and forth, with the piano emphasizing support and the trombone wallowing in despair. Eventually, the trombone begins to come around and rise. Concluding with a triumphant feeling of release, the mind is lifted from despair, free and open to whatever life brings next. Mental health looks different for everyone, and I want to reflect that in this composition. For all future performances, the performers can make significant musical changes to better reflect their own challenges. This could be as small as a different tempo or as large as a completely different style and articulation. This composition is inspired by the symbology present in the suits of a deck of cards. It is in one continuous movement that is divided into four sections. Spades (death) is a funeral march that uses frequent dotted rhythms, outbursts of anger, and a lyrical, somber descending melody. A change of mood that is accomplished by brightening the harmony leads into Hearts (romance). This section follows a loose AABA form. The A sections contain lyrical lines and lush harmony. The B section is freer in rhythm and represents a dialogue between two lovers. The last measure of this section introduces a dotted rhythm motive that is used throughout the next section, Diamonds (riches). This section is subtitled riches instead of wealth because riches implies money for money’s sake rather than the benefits it can buy. It is in the style of a frenzied waltz as if those with the riches are at an elaborate ball totally unaware of the restlessness going on around them. Towards the end of this section, a chromatic line begins to insert itself, suggesting the uprising and war (Clubs) that follows. A dissonant chord transitions the listener into Clubs (war) section. This section begins powerfully with repeated chords resembling people shooting at each other. The shooting motif appears frequently throughout. Different melodic ideas represent the battle between forces. The tide of the battle keeps going back and forth, but nobody actually wins. The piece ends with the sound of death and destruction, therefore starting the cycle of the suits over again. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Sonata for Tuba and Piano (2007) was commissioned by and is dedicated to tubist MarkNelson for premiere at the 2007 Southwest Tuba and Euphonium Conference. The work isin three movements, each using the same basic musical material. Throughout the work,there is an integration of the total chromatic spectrum (represented through row-likeconstructions) with triadic and tonal elements, particularly connected to the interval of aminor third.The first movement, Speaking of Sunsets, is bold and dramatic throughout. The musicalmaterial is subjected to a series of circular paths that loop back on themselves until themovement ends. (The title refers to American poet James Tate’s poem Never Again theSame and also Charles Wuorinen’s musical setting of that text.)The second movement, Build Me a Garden, takes its title from an original song I overheardwhile planning this work. It sung by a homeless man who was then sitting on the banks ofthe Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. His song (bearing both textual and musicalresemblance to various folk songs and African-American spirituals) spoke of hopes anddreams:Build me a garden, far ‘cross the seaBuild me a garden, a place I can beThe water is wide, the journey is long.I’ve put all my sorrows into this song.The movement opens with a slightly modified version of the song, which is developed overthe course of the movement. Connections are made between the first movement’s materialand the pentatonic melody (with its opening intervals of minor thirds).The third movement, Rising at Dawn, is a moto perpetuo. The ideas from both previousmovements are put together in new, dancing combinations. Coming out of the darker firsttwo movements, this movement continually seeks places of joy. The dance breaks down,and a recollection of the first movement leads to a bright coda.
