This is version number 2 of this song. I decided to make an SATB version of the first one I did that was a duet. I decided to change the bridge. I decided I really liked it, so I condensed it somewhat into a duet with the new bridge. You can listen to both and decide which one you like better. I really love this song because when I wrote it, I thought back about how life would have been back in those days as apposed to life today. In some ways, life was much simpler, but at the same time a hard life. Today is similar but in a different way. Some things are easier but life is not as simple as it once was. No clarinet duet has made me stop in rehearsal and just smile so much from how cool things sounded. - Marcus Moore, clarinetist on Duo MpingoDuo Mpingo is an approximately 6 minute crowd pleaser that is perfect for any occasion. It is a modern but accessible piece that is loosely based on the lifecycle of a mpingo, or African blackwood, tree. It is a relatively advanced piece but could be performed by advanced level students. Duo Mpingo can be programmed equally well on environmental-themed or any other type of concert.Program Note: When I began to research the mpingo (African blackwood) tree in preparation for writing this piece, I came to learn that it is a fascinating tree. It has the ability to survive fires, it does not reach maturity for about 70 – 100 years, and it improves soil fertility. However, it is endangered in several African countries due to illegal logging and over-harvesting, in part because of its beautiful dark heartwood. The outside of the mpingo tree looks like any other tree with a light brown color; the inside, however, is a gorgeous, dark brown-black color – a color you have seen if you’ve ever seen a clarinet, as clarinets, along with other western instruments, are made out of the dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. I had never stopped to think about why wooden clarinets have such a dark color instead of what one typically thinks of as a wood color. I was astonished by the hidden beauty of this tree and what secrets lay inside.Duo Mpingo is somewhat programmatic in that it loosely chronicles the imagined life of a mpingo tree. There is a short section close to the middle of the piece (the inner part of the piece, if you will) that is meant to evoke the beautiful, mysterious, endangered dark heartwood of the mpingo tree. The direction to the performers for this section is solemn, prayer-like, reverential, which is how I feel we should look at every tree – not as something in our way that needs to be cut down, but with reverence for the amazing living things they are.Duo Mpingo was commissioned and premiered by Daraja Music Initiative and Clarinets for Conservation to promote a sustainable planet. This song was a turning point for me as I looked for help from my destructive feelings and found the love and support that was always within my reach. - Faith Angelina It was August 8th, 2016, when Faith’s mother found the suicide note left on her minivan. It was a heart stopping moment. The type that slows down time and changes all priorities and perspectives. On the front side of the paper it said, PLEASE READ in big letters. On the back was the following… Dear Mom, I am writing this to inform you about something I didn’t have the strength to tell you in person. I have depression. I know you think that we all go through a stage where we are sad it’s true, but this is not the case. I thought that I just had a sad time too until I realized I had been thinking about killing myself many times. I know that this is hard to hear but I felt it was important to tell you something I had been holding back for 5 years. I hope you can think of me the same after this note, and know that me thinking about killing myself is NOT your fault. Love, Faith After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body. She had been waking up in the middle of the night over half of her young life and wandering around while the rest of the family slept. With a small prescription, and lots of love, Faith headed off to start middle school and a magical year that would follow. Shortly after this experience, Faith composed a new song called Finding Hope and finished up on three others she had been working on.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. A Walk in Nature is my first composition and follows the story of someone journeying through the woods. As the piece begins, the sun has just risen and awoken the life inside and surrounding the home. Each entrance represents the different lifeforms waking up on the beautiful day. Finally, the birds are chirping, the sky is filled with light, a breeze makes the woods feel alive, and the journey begins. As the “B†section begins the wanderer begins to look inward and think about themselves, life, and begins to feel nostalgic. This continues until suddenly, it begins to rain; and thus begins the C theme. This minor section represents the darkness the wanderer is feeling from their thoughts as well as the rain that has begun to soak their clothes. Finally, the clouds slowly begin to part and, just as the day started, the sun begins to bring light and warmth through the clouds. The journey is almost over, but not before the beauty of nature reveals itself one last time.

On April 19, 2019, I started writing my first composition, His Memory, on my first album, Show Your Pride. The Show Your Pride album was influenced by my best friend, Nigel Shelby, who tragically passed away by suicide after experiencing bullying for being outed as gay. It has been a few years since his death turned a national spotlight on the issue of LGBTQIA+ mental health and bullying. He was 15 years old at the time of his passing. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart when I found he was gone. It was the first time I had lost anybody that I was close to. I was in a lot of pain at the time. Losing my best friend is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences I have had in my life. This album is telling a coming-out story about a bisexual musician going on a self-discovery journey to find his true authentic self. I first met Nigel in mid-2018 when I was nervous, struggling with depression, and coming out as bisexual, so I gathered enough strength and confidence to come out to him. He's very kind and supportive of me. He was brave enough to come out to me as well. He has been a really good friend and my spirit guide as long as I've known him. He was understanding, thoughtful, and had a maturity about him that I admired. I feel happy and honored to have known him and had the best friends with him. I truly believe he is watching over me every day. In this inspirational, heartbreaking piece, His Memory, I will share a coming-out story about two boys who came out to each other, spending their friendship together until one of them passes away. This piece is based on a true story of how I coped with grief, dealing with depression about my best friend's passing, and how I found happiness within myself after his memorial service. It drew inspiration from many compositions and soundtracks, including Where The Sky Has No Stars by Katahj Copley, Lose You Now by Lindsey Stirling (feat. Mako), You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, April Sky by Lin Chin Cheng, and Avatar The Last Airbender by Jeremy Zuckerman. These compositions I mentioned express hope and spark memories of lost loved ones. This piece is in 3 Acts: Friendship, I Lost You. and His Memory Lives On. Each one was inspired by actual events. Act I: Friendship Act II: I Lost You Act III: His Memory Lives On While you are listening to this piece, I want you to think about someone you love who is no longer with you. If you're one of those people who lost someone special to you, I am so sorry for your loss. Just know that you are not alone. Don't try to run and hide from your grief. Whatever your grief experience, it's important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold. You will grieve for as long as you need to, but you are a strong person and will find your way through this. Life is so precious. Cherish every moment with your loved ones. Coming out is one of the most difficult things a person can do, but if you are having difficulty or are unsure about it, just know that there are people out there who do love you for who you are. Learn to embrace your authentic self. Don't let your sexual orientation define who you are. The right people will accept you and those are the only people who matter. Be yourself, be happy, and do what you feel. Don't care so much about what others think and enjoy your life! Keep following your heart and don't be afraid to stand out!

My how time flies. In 1984 I had my whole life ahead of me. Then I graduated high school, went to the U.S.A.F. Academy, and served a 26 year career as an officer and a pilot in the U.S. Air Force active duty and reserves. Now I look back and wonder where all the time went. I wrote this song to depict how I feel about getting to play the piano again at the ripe old age of 49 after such a long absence. For 26 years I did not have a piano so I did not think about playing. Then my mother in law gave me her piano and it was like reuniting with a long lost friend. I am grateful for any opportunity I have to play now. It makes me feel like I am 18 years old again with my whole life ahead of me. But then I have to wake up from my dream and get back to reality. (2015 Steinway/SMP Piano Contest).
