The minor third offers lots of opportunities for mirroring, in contrary motion. The half-step in this piece is treated not so much as a component interval as the distance between the two minor thirds being used at any one time. Lots of crunchies that you would not expect to have much euphony have a pleasant snap, like a fresh salad or a crisp! Diminished chords and minor seventh chords are turned upside down, and combined in unusual ways throughout. There is even a major-minor section in the middle. Half-steps often take the form of major sevenths, even sometimes displaced by two octaves. Approx running time is 2 mins 30 secs, less a a slightly slower pace. Worth doing at less than the suggested tempo, as the colors still come through. MBB.

Light and Dark's (Grade 5) melody is derived from Messaien's Third Mode (also known as the Tcherepnin scale), a 9-tone symmetrical scale that contains 3 major seventh chords a major third apart. It's like a major diminished scale, or minor whole tone... the construction is whole-step, half-step transposed by major thirds.Despite its unusual construction, it has a familiar sound; its intervalic structure became widely used throughout the 20th Century, notably in the work of Herbie Hancock and others on the vanguard of progressive harmony.

Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano (2012) was written for violinist Warren Davidson and pianist Donna Amato, superb musicians for whose advocacy on behalf of my music I am very grateful. The first movement, Canto, is an extended song that develops through a variety of textures. The second movement, Lamento, is a fierce lament in the tradition of an old Irish caoine. The thirdmovement, Variazioni, is structured as two presentations of the theme surrounding five free variations. The theme serves both as the basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structural template. Each variation also contains material referring back specifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory. The first variation is fast and limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The third variation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifth variation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowly regains its declamatory nature before an intense coda ends the work.

This piece is inspired by an integer sequence (A053838 in the OEIS) that is self-similar at every third term. This means that if you take the first term of the sequence, then the fourth, then the seventh, and so on, you get a copy of the original sequence. The sequence begins in the clarinet melody at m. 9, while the right-hand notes of the piano part feature a slower statement of the same sequence. In the first half of the melody (mm. 9-12), the numbers 0, 1, 2 are represented by the notes B, C, D; in the second half (mm. 13-16), the scheme shifts downward by two steps to G, A, B. After an interlude (mm. 17-24), the sequence continues in mm. 25-32, now shifting the scheme downward by one step every bar. In the third section (mm. 40-47), the scheme shifts downward by two steps every two bars.

Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1141383). This three-part Invention No. 2 in D minor was composed in the summer of 1991. I shared it with my modal and tonal counterpoint instructor, Professor Richard Wilson, and he responded favorably to my venturesome modulations and use of the Neapolitan chord. Similar to my first invention in A minor, the motive is announced by the upper voice before it is restated an octave lower by the lower voice in bar 2 to form a stretto. In bar 3, the middle voice states the motive in the dominant key of A minor with the lower and upper voices playing the first and second countermotives respectively. An episode ensues and arrives at a half cadence in bar 8. The opening fragment of the motive is exploited in conjunction with a pedal tone and a variant of the second countermotive to navigate through a series of contrasting keys. At bar 14, the motive is reasserted in F-sharp minor layered over itself in stretto with a C-sharp pedal tone in bar 15. The voices from the episode in bars 5-8 are reshuffled in bars 18-21 as another exercise in invertible counterpoint. In measure 16, the motive and two countermotives are reprised in C-sharp minor, a half step below the tonic key. Starting in bar 18, the episode from bars 6-8 is reprised in F-sharp minor with the first and second countermotives exchanging positions. This is followed in bars 16-27 by a varied restatement of the episodic sequence from bars 8-17 that cadences in bar 27 before a restatement of the subject in bar 28 in G minor with slightly embellished countermotives. Bars 32-35 present a restatement of the episode from bars 5-8 with the motive relocated to the lower voice and the two countermotives in intimate proximity in the two upper voices. An unexpected descending scale in a series of compound harmonic 10ths forms an inversion of the second half of the motive and sets the stage for a perfect cadence to a Picardy Third in D major. After so many years, I remain especially pleased with the effect of that ending.

It is brief and rich with variety, and it involves a technique of mine called fracturing (see note* below). This causes the dissonance you'll hear in parts of this work.On one occasion, when I felt stressed, I enjoyed listening to Morton Feldman's String Quartet II (1983), which lasts about 6 hours. This quiet but lovely music soothed and pacified me. On the other hand, if you want something to energize and alert you in less than 11 minutes, this quartet may be for you -- whenever you acquire a recording of it by some lucky quartet ensemble. Have a cup of coffee with it, for insurance!In the meantime, enjoy the audio sample, Movement I of my quartet. This alone may suffice to get you going, in only two and a half minutes. String Quartet - William and Mary: Four movements, total time 10:45: I. Allegro moderato (2:32) A tango-like dance movement: Preface, Introduction, A, B, A’, C, Coda (two variations). II. Lento (2:44) Counting to twenty in 5-4, 4-4, and 12-8 time. 5-4 time predominates (five groups of four measures each), then 4-4 (two groups of five measures each) and 12-8 (one group of five measures). Throughout there are 72 counts per minute, with quarter notes counted in the 5-4 and 4-4 time signatures, and with dotted quarter notes counted in the 12-8 time signature. The five measures of 12-8 also introduce the theme for movement III.Fun with three different time signatures! III. Allegro (2:11) Variations on a Scottish-like folk tune and fragments of it. One variation is an example of tonal pointillism. The closing measures are an extended coda based on a transformed version of the original tune. IV. Swing (3:18) West Coast swing tempo for the Introduction and Part A; triple swing tempo for Part B. Note* on the fracturing technique This is my method to produce systematically new types of dissonance and corresponding modifications and resolutions. Fracturing consists of changing pitches in a melody or chord as follows: (a) Decide on the root note position within the staff or line of music. (b) Represent the applicable chord in half-step notation, with the root given the value 0. (c) Alternatively subtract and add a prescribed number of half steps from, and to, each successive number in the annotated chord (except for the root). (d) Use the new fractured annotation to define the new pitches. The actual or implied root of the chord (tonal center) remains unchanged. The resulting new chord or melody is thus related or resolvable to the parent tonal harmony or chord. Fracturing appears mainly in the first and third movements, with spare use in the second and fourth movements.

My completion of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) brings to life the tantalizing fragments he left for the third and fourth movements. The third movement follows closely Schubert's surviving short score, where his intricate melodic ideas are expanded with a full orchestration that honors his harmonic language. This movement, true to Schubert’s symphonic style, carries a lively yet graceful energy, interspersed with contrasting themes that reflect both joy and contemplation.The fourth movement begins with a nod to Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, seamlessly transitioning from the grandeur of the third movement. Drawing from the overture’s distinctive opening, I introduce a bold and majestic theme that acts as a foundation for the final movement. From here, the symphony unfolds into a dramatic and richly textured conclusion. My aim in this movement was to capture Schubert’s gift for lyrical, expansive melody while incorporating the dynamic tension and rhythmic drive that characterizes his symphonic writing.Throughout the fourth movement, I intertwine moments of serene beauty with powerful orchestral climaxes, echoing the drama of the symphony’s first movement. The use of Schubert’s melodic genius is central to this completion, with soaring strings and resonant winds building to a thrilling finale. The symphony concludes with a recapitulation of the opening theme from the first movement, bringing a sense of unity and closure to the entire work.The entire symphony, now lasting 50 minutes, forms a cohesive continuation of Schubert's original vision. This completion fills the second half of the concert program, offering a balanced and dramatic conclusion to the work Schubert began but never had the chance to finish.

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra Composer: Graeme Culpepper Year: 2022 Program Notes: I feel that there is a time in every composer's life when they decide to write a concerto. Writing a concerto is as intriguing as it is difficult, as finding a balance between soloist and ensemble can prove to be a tricky task. What’s more, is deciding upon said ensemble. In today’s musical climate, the supporting ensemble can be a variety of different instrumental groups ranging from a chamber ensemble consisting of just a few musicians to a full symphony orchestra. In my humble opinion, with a genre as grand as a concerto, especially one involving the trumpet, I find it fitting to use the orchestra to accompany the trumpet. However, I opted to use an orchestra without a trumpet section to better support the soloist. This concerto’s first movement is built upon a couple of form-defining motifs. One in the form of an ostinato that is constantly changing meter, and another that is a simple short rhythmic cell that is able to fit in a variety of different textures throughout the movement. This movement also introduces the main motif throughout the entire concerto: a melodic sequence consisting of a minor third, a perfect fifth, followed by another minor third which resolves down by half step. This is the unifying motif of the entire concerto. I often ponder as to where the material in the second movement came from. After a long time of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it is a subconscious expression of myself that comes from deep within. The second movement is perhaps the most vulnerable I have ever been with any of the music I have written, and the experience I personally have when listening to it is one that is very intimate. The third movement is a thrilling romp that is entirely built on the unifying motif mentioned earlier. The whole movement is essentially one big variation of itself. This movement is arguably the most technical and gives the trumpet soloist a great opportunity to show off their skill. This movement is also built upon a one-bar rhythmic ostinato so that the tension in this movement is never fully resolved until the very last bar, in hopes that this will keep the listener on their toes at all times. The S & A parts form one of these melodies, the T is another and the B the third.Something that my choirs have found useful to note is that in the first half, the phrases have an upward motion and in the second half a downward motion (with the exception of the tenor part).As an alternative to the words, for a performance, this could be sung through vowel sounds (ooh, ahh or hmm) with each melody offered the opportunity to ‘feature’ by singing the words over the others singing a vowel sound. For example, the S, A & B part ‘ooh' whilst the T sing their tune with the words.
