The tune also appeared as ‘The Green Mountains’ in O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (1903). ‘The Maid Behind the Bar’ was a favourite dance tune in the US after it was brought over from Ireland by refugees from The Great Irish Famine. It is a great reel for beginners and experts alike.History: The origins of this tune are greatly disputed, with various stories in circulation. ‘Cooley’s’ is often associated with Joe Cooley, a button accordion player from County Galway. One of the most popular explanations of the origins of this tune is from Joe’s brother, Séamus. According to him, the two brothers heard the tune in County Clare being played on a ‘battered old concertina’. Later that night, the two brothers recreated the tune tune as best they could, ‘staying up through the night working and worrying the remembered fragments until finally the reel took shape’. Despite hundreds of recordings and performances of his works, Kelly never collected money for his compositions. It is a great jig for beginners and experts alike.History: This jig’s title refers to those who visit The Blarney Stone, a piece of limestone built into the walls of Blarney Castle, near Cork, Ireland. Kissing the stone is said to endow the kisser with great eloquence. According to legend, Cormac Laidir MacCarthy (the builder of Blarney Castle), appealed to the Irish goddess ClÃodhna for assistance with a lawsuit. She told MacCarthy to kiss the first stone he saw on his way to the courthouse, which he did. MacCarthy then plead his case with great eloquence and won. Thus, The Blarney Stone is said to impart the ability to deceive without offending. It is a great jig for beginners and experts alike.History: The title of this jig refers to the fair of the same name that was held in Donnybrook, Dublin. The fair was held from the 13th century up until the 1850’s and is also a slang term for a brawl or riot. In 1204, a license was granted to the corporation of Dublin by King John of England to hold an annual eight-day fair in Donnybrook. In 1252, the duration of the fair was extended to fifteen days. Over the subsequent centuries, the terms of holding the fair continued to change until it was decided in the 18th century that the fair would be held on the 26th of August on Donnybrook Green for a full fortnight. The name is usually translated as Tulach na nAspal (hill of the apostles) or Tulach na nEaspag (hill of the bishops), most likely as Tulla grew up around a monastery founded in the 7th century by Mochulla who is now the Patron Saint of Tulla. This reel was popularised by Joe Cooley who recorded it in 1975 as a part of a set that also included The Skylark and Roaring Mary.
