Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998889). This is a set of three solo bassoon works. The first piece, Pierrot, develops the notion of 'line'. It explores various facets of the instrument (as in the more complex nature of Pierrot's Commedia Dell'Arte character). The piece features a serial 'note-row' procedure but in a relaxed manner, more akin to Berg than either Schoenberg or Webern. The second piece, Folk Lament, alludes to a folk idiom by using modality (characterised by the flattened seventh degree of the scale) within a sonata form structure. The two main themes give a broad feel of being improvised and, particularly in the case of the second subject, includes composed-out forms of folk-like ornamentation. The final piece, The Clown, employs bluesy inflections, an irregular time signature (5/4) and a clear rondo structure. Varied repetitions of the main, jaunty theme, alternate with contrasting episodes in related keys, one of which is even a derivation of the 12-bar Blues. The set is highly accessible and suitable for more advanced bassoonists including students and professionals. Solar Visions (2004) for woodwind quintet was commissioned by and is dedicated to theArcadian Winds of Boston, Massachusetts, at the specific request of John Paul Aubrey,hornist. Hearing the Arcadian Winds perform contemporary music on numerous occasionswas an inspiration to the writing of this piece.The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The startingpoint for the work's conception is a dissonant cadential figuration from early American music,centered on Ab. Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate patterns ofperfect 5ths one semitone apart. This sense of cadence is extended in the work to makelarger-scale structures.The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for theinstruments in solos. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interruptedperiodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet.The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody inturn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a rearticulationof the cadential figuration.The third movement, Dance, is energetic and driving. The dance is interrupted by arecollection of the first movement's material. The final resolution of the extended cadentialfigurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. This is the largest song so far. It is very complex and was originally composed as a Soprano solo with a 9-part 'orchestra' split into three unequally sized 'choirs'. Choir 1 consisted of two cittarones (a kind of theorbo or archlute), a clavicembalo (early harpsichord) and a spinet. Choir 2 comprised a string orchestra (viole da brazza, violins, viole da braccia, clavicembano (sic) and basso continuo). Choir 3 comprised individual instruments viola da braccio or gamba, basso da braccio or gamba, contrabass and an (unnamed) keyboard. As you might imagine, this was well nigh impossible to reduce to 5 players, so I have transcribed it for 9 brass instruments, more or less keeping to the original 'choir' groupings with a trumpet/cornet solo line. This is also one of the longest songs so far. I hope you enjoy the result. The text translates as: How softly, scented lips, I kiss you or listen to you. The poet is describing his inability to both kiss and hear his beloved's voice at the same time. The following parts are supplied: Part 1 in Bb (Solo) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 2 in Bb (Tutti 1) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 3 in C/Bb (Basso) - Euphonium/Trombone/Baritone Part 4 in Bb (Tutti 2) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 5 in Bb (Tutti 3) - Trumpet/Cornet Part 6 in F/Eb - Horn Part 7 in F/Eb - Horn Part 8 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 9 in C/Bb - Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone Part 10 in C/Eb - Tuba/Eb Bass The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

The arranger, Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester, Belwin Mills and Intrada (Netherlands).
