An air and three variations on the well known traditional American tune that is usually sung to the words of Amazing Grace. The tune (Air) is introduced in hymn tune style to my own harmony. The first two variations are in the style of John Stanley. The third variation is in the form of a chorale prelude. The suggested stop registration is for three manuals and is only a guide. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.

Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928135). Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is one of Brahms' most popular works, expertly arranged here for Brass Quintet by American composer P. F. Strohm. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced. This piece was composed for Will Hutchinson, an up-and-coming young trombonist from Christchurch, New Zealand. It is in three movements, the first is chorale-like and calls for a rich tone together with excellent lyrical interpretation - a fine opportunity to bring the romantic element to the fore. The second movement is a waltz and great fun for the player(s) and the audience. The third movement gives the soloist the opportunity to show his or her musicianship and is much loved by audiences. For the soloist and pianist this is not a technically difficult piece to play - but it provides an excellent opportunity to interpret the music and draw the audience in.

This score is based on the old British Carol "I saw three ships." There are seven variations preceding the fugue. After the theme has been stated, the first two variations extend the theme; the third variation introduces the pedals. The next three variations are in the style of Baroque genres: the fourth variation is a noel written as an homage to Daquin; the fifth variation is a figured chorale, in which the chorale Von Himmel hoch, da komm ich her makes its first appearance; and the sixth is a Handelian rigaudon. The seventh variation is a "carillion" in which Von Himmel hoch reappears. After a dramatic, dissonant chord, the score concludes with a chorale fugue during which Von Himmel hoch appears in the pedal. Composed for and dedicated to David Higgs, in celebration of his twenty-five years of teaching at the Eastman School of Music. Duration: 6:45.

The same solo stop can be used for each of the three variations, alternatively, as Carson Cooman demonstrates in this youtube recording, different registrations can be used, depending on what is available. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906 using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted a family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular and optimistic lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SSA arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for boy choir, amateur choir, school or college choir. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies.
