This arrangement is a set of three lovely lesser known ones from his later years.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. These three pieces are to mimic studies of voicing and touch through lyrical forms. Each specific BPM marking in the tempo is intentionally preceded with ossia rather than ca.. This is to emphasize complete tempo freedom for the performer. The BPM markings are simply given as an initial baseline, showing the general tempo that the composer would perform these pieces at. Neither of the three pieces finish with a triad. Instead, they end with some form of extended harmony, whether it be through a chord or arpeggio. These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792414). Elgar wrote two lovely contrasting works, opus 15, for Violin around the 1890’s, the Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin. They were titled in French as his publisher suggested the British public would find them more appealing to purchase. The Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin became his best selling works to that point and added much needed funds for the family finances. The Romance, opus 62 was originally written for the Bassoon as a lyrical work with orchestra, as Elgar tried to get away from the usually comical writing for the instrument. Mr. Sauer has combined the three delightful works into a three movement suite of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.
