Fiestas de Santa Fe is a collection of music inspired by the culture and geography of Santa Fe, New Mexico.The four pieces are written for a modest instrument and with the exception of a few passages requiring the use of a pull down pedal registration, the sores are playable on the manuals only. With a few adjustments, the music can also be played on a Harpsichord or Pianoforte. The set may be played complete or individually as the performer elects.Santos, in three movements, features musical depictions of New Mexico saints which are often represented by local folk artists in either retablos (wooden panels) or bultos (carved figures). These images are not considered icons, but merely symbols of the invisible power or personages to whom an individual's prayers are addressed. San Acacio is the patron of soldiers and headaches. San Cayetano patiently ministered to the sick and the poor. San Geronimo was a flagellant who frequently heard the voice (or call) of God.Tierra Roja is inspired by the distinct natural colors and qualities of light found in the American Southwest. Sunrises and sunsets are often spectacularly colorful events which leave an indelible impression on the mind. This score includes programmatic music to suggest a timeless of the desert, the crystalline blue skies, and even the scampering of a gecko inthe noonday sun.Farolitos en la Nieve is an evocative setting of an old Christmas hymn which offers an image of the city on Christmas Eve as it is bedecked in softly lit candles on the sidewalks in the falling snow.La Posadas focuses on an annual Advent-tide event in Santa Fe which commemorates the journey of the Holy Family from Nazareth to Bethlehem. A procession is led (often by two children) through the town to find a house where Mary and Joseph might be welcome. A setting of Adoro te Devote is found in the midst of this piece evoking the reverence of the community around the manger bearing the Christ Child.

English.The three songs Welcome Love (Ubi caritas), Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, and Gaelic Blessing are interconnected motivically yet distinct in meter, tonality, and message. These three songs are interconnected motivically, yet distinct in meter, tonality, and message. Peace and reverence flow throughout. The songs are for a bass-baritone. Commissioned in 2003 by David Arnold, a North Carolina bass-baritone who is a soloist in the 80-voice Chancel Choir at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Mr. Arnold premiered these songs at Centenary with organist Ray Ebert and cellist Jennifer Alexandra Johnston on February 27, 2005. A new version for voice and piano was created in 2005. A transposition for lyric Baritone was added in 2015, commissioned by Ferris Allen (Baritone) and Linda Holzer (Pianist) of Little Rock, AR.The lyrics for Ubi Caritas are based on a new translation, by Christopher Brunelle, of the traditional Ubi Caritas Est Vera. A recurrent image in this translation is the gesture of welcoming: welcoming love, welcoming God, welcoming the friendly unfamiliar thought, welcoming Christ with us. The musical interpretation of welcoming is stepwise motion, either up or down, around a pitch center. Perhaps this might be heard as an opening of the door, or an opening of the heart.An interlude leads to the second song, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, a musical setting of the Prayer of Saint Francis. The accompaniment is sparse, with material reminiscent of the welcoming pattern in the first song. This song alternates between triple meter for the thematic sections (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) and duple meter for the more recitative sections (O Divine Master...). The music ends as it began, with simple open fifths accompaniment, this time filling in the chords to express the fullness of the lyrics born to eternal life.A second interlude provides the bridge to the third song, Gaelic Blessing. The text for this song is a series of blessings for peace. The gentle chordal arpeggiations in the piano are intended to provide a peaceful accompaniment. [Once again, the stepwise intervals and recurrent regular rhythms relate to the first song.]In keeping with the simplicity and repetition of the text, the music is formed by a series of four-measure phrases (blessings). The blessings are similar in contour, each spanning an interval of a fourth. Growth is achieved through repetition and some dynamic contrast. However, the principal aesthetic of this song is constancy and gentle flow. Only at the end of the song, when the voice descends into the deep range, is the melodic contour altered, and dynamic contrast introduced. As the voice ends on low tones, the piano line rises, perhaps to the source of peace.Duration: 10 min.

Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II. Invocation Simple Song of Fun/Om ma ni pad me hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) (Om ah hum hum. Om ah kham hum. Om ah om hum. Om ah sva hum. Om ah ah hum. Om ah ha hum. Om ah lam hum.
