Duration: ca. 4' Song Without Words, “Twilight†is inspired by Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, collections of lyrical piano pieces by the composer. There is nothing overly new, unusual or complicated in this piece. I chose, instead, to focus on lyricism, the main element that made me love Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words so much. The subtitle, “Twilightâ€, came from my fascination with the time between sunset and evening. The piece is essentially divided into three sections; the first being a calm and warm melody, the second being more somber and melancholy, and the third being a triumphant return to the original calm and warm melody.

Halevi Songs is a 3-movement song cycle, composed in 2002. It is a setting of three poems (in English translation of the original Hebrew) of Judah Halevi, who was a Jewish scholar and poet who lived in Spain in the Middle Ages. The three movements are I. The Mirror, II. Do the Tears Know?, and III. Calm After the Storm. Each is just under three minutes. The total duration of the piece is between 8.5 and 9 minutes. The audio clip is from the third movement, in a performance of the sextet version of this piece. A complete recording is available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The performers are Dianne Smith (soprano), Janet Polvino (flute), Isabelle Boggs (clarinet), Bob Ferrier (guitar), Craig Bitterman (percussion), and Joyce Crouch (piano). It may be performed with just piano accompaniment as well. Composer's Notes: The translation of the first poem, The Mirror, is by the 19th century American poet Emma Lazarus, most famous for her familiar words engraved on the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poorâ?¦ There has been some interesting academic discussion concerning this poem. It is generally attributed to Halevi, but some scholars now believe it may have been written by someone else. (I have also seen the translation attributed to someone else.) The second poem, Do the Tears Know? was originally a tombstone inscription for one of Haleviâ??s friends. This setting was written to honor my father, Harold Allan Brill, who passed away in January, 2000. The third poem, Calm After the Storm, is actually the second half of a longer poem about a sea voyage. The three songs are meant to be performed continuously, without a break in between. ISBN 9790570483211.Writing for Soprano Saxophone and Piano was a revelation - the dialogue between the instruments was as if they were two voices sharing a converstaion on a subject that only they really knew about. So, I suppose, it was inevitable that I began to think of the pieces as a set of 'songs without words'. However, there was something rather elusive about their characters and it wasn't until they were composed that the titles, and the order in which they should be played, became obvious. These songs have been conceived in a non-standard harmonic language; for this reason the saxophone part intentionally has no key signature. Rhythmically, the songs are comparatively straightforward, although the constantly changing time signatures in Song Of Sorrow require careful counting. The range used is not excessive, with more use made of the higher notes than the lower ones.

(I still have yet to compose the third one.)I've written and discarded more pieces than I can count, but this  simple little piece has stuck with me.  I can see sparks in it of works that were to come later.  Simple and naive as it is, it still sounds like my own voice.

What is Wisdom?In Proverbs 8:5-11 she says,Learn prudence, acquire intelligence, …take my instruction instead of silver,and knowledge rather than choice gold,for Wisdom is better than jewels. This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. The third song, Choose Life, (1:16) includes a chant that can be sung by the congregation or audience along with the choir. This could be used as the final hymn in a religious service. All three songs can be used separately or together. At the end of the score you will find a copy of the congregational chant which can be copied and placed in an Order of Service or Program. The only one of Chaucer’s works that is scientific, not literary, in nature, A Treatise on the Astrolabe represents the oldest known English-language scientific manual and is a personal manual for his son on how to use an astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument. The that this work was created for a practical rather than artistic purpose was particularly appealing – it called to mind Walter Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz, when Brother Francis creates an illumination of a relic of St. Leibowitz, unaware that the relic was in fact a simple, and quite ordinary, circuit diagram.Presented here are seven songs divided among four parts. The first part, Prelude, contains one song, a setting of Chaucer’s personal introduction to his son, Lewis. The second, Here Begynneth the descripcioun of thin Astrolabie, contains three songs describing various components of the astrolabe. The worken the verrey pracktik of the forseide conclusions follows with two songs explaining the use of the astrolabe to calculate the position of the sun and the time of dawn and dusk; here, the words are spoken rather than sung. Postlude concludes the work in a style reminiscent of the opening, unmeasured material, using for its text the humble conclusion to Chaucer’s introduction.I am very grateful to soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle and percussionist Steve Solook, who I first approached in 2011 about a potential Chaucer cycle, as well as bassist Scott Worthington, who came to the project later but no less enthusiastically; without their support this piece would not have been possible.With the purchase, you are authorized to print a copy of the score for each member of the ensemble for the purposes of rehearsal and performance. Isham Edgar Jones certainly kept busy. By age 26 the Chicago tenor saxophonist led his own dance band, and it was one of the most popular of the 1920s. But he also found time to write melodies for a whole raft of popular songs. Twenty-one Isham Jones Orchestra recordings of his compositions peaked in the top ten most popular, and eight of those made it to the number one spot. One was It Had to Be You, with words by Gus Kahn.    Although written in 1924, It Had to Be You defies the passage of time, still sounding fresh and contemporary. It remains popular and has evolved into a jazz standard.    This brass quintet version retains the original key of G Major. It opens with a suggested tempo of 104 BPM and a nine-measure introduction that combines figures and phrases from both verse and chorus. At rehearsal letter A, Trumpet 1 begins the melody of the familiar chorus, accompanied by Tuba and Horn in F. Trumpet 2 quickly joins and the melody changes to an upper brass trio. The melody then passes to Trombone, back to the trio, to Tuba and then to Horn in F. The section winds up with the original Trumpet-Horn-Tuba combination.    The seldom-heard verse begins at rehearsal letter C and takes the form of a sort of call-and-response between upper and lower brass. As the section nears its end, tempo slows to a suggested 80 BPM and Trombone begins to take over.    Rehearsal letter D marks the beginning of the chorus’ final time through, and here it is mostly Trombone handling the melody in quasi-Dixieland fashion. The upper brass trio and Tuba both help out, but, for the most part, it is Trombone all the way to the end. (Although, a good time is had by all!)    Performance time is about three minutes, fifty seconds. All notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument with the following exceptions: (1) Trumpet 1 has one or two A-above-its-staff notes, and (2) in the wrap-up near the end, Trombone has the option of playing a short phrase either (a) within its register or (b) higher, including a G above the staff.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1303802).     A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:         Oh! I’m a young musician,         From distant lands I come.         Singing and playing,         Ever I’m straying.    Also known as “I Am a Fine Musician,†“I Am a Gay Musician†and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions. The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s. As published in an 1889 collection of children’s songs, it bears the title, “Ich bin ein Musikant.â€Â That translates as “I am a musician.â€Â In the lyrics the musician claims to be “from Schwabenland†(Swabia) and to play geige (violin: “Dide schum schum schumâ€), flöte (flute: “Päde wäpp päpp päppâ€) and basse (bass: “Dide schum schum schump, päde wäpp päpp päpp). Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of.     Anyway, that’s the tune on which “The Brass Player†was built. But here, the musician is concerned only with brass. Which brass? Well, possibly trumpet. Or maybe horn in F. Or trombone. Or tuba. Or perhaps all four; certainly, all are featured in this piece.    “The Brass Player†comprises four sections. The first is in the key of C major and is played at a moderate 2/4 tempo. After a brief Trumpet/Tuba ostinato, Trombone introduces the main theme. Other instruments join in and play around with a variation or two.     The second section is a sweet, nostalgic rendition in 4/4 carried mainly by Horn in F, with help from Trumpets and Trombone.     In section three, the mood changes radically. Time signature goes to 3/4; tempo speeds up to vivace and the key changes to B Minor. All five instruments participate, and some odd things take place rhythmically at I through K (measures 200 through 262), but Tuba seems to carry the melody most of the time.    Section four, in G Major, clips along at a fast 4/4 time. It returns to the main theme and (as in “Ich bin ein Musikant†and its multitudinous derivations) presents in call-and-response form. The first few measures are straight, but discord quickly creeps in. The melody begins to include smears, flutter tonguing and off-beat rhythmic figures. There is even a brief section in G Minor. Gradually, order and theme are restored and the piece ends in a glorious, upbeat statement.    This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 398 measures, a little over nine minutes in length. There are four changes of key and four changes of time signature. Trumpet 1’s highest note is A above its staff; Trombone’s is F above the staff. Trumpet 2 has a few G-below-its-staff notes.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Jean-Paul-Égide Martini wrote Plaisir d'amour in 1784. He took the words from a poem that appears in Célestine, a short novel by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. The poem begins, Plaisir d'amour ne dure qu'un moment (The pleasure of love lasts only a moment). Over the years, Martini’s melody has proved popular with other composers, including Hector Berlioz and Louis van Waefelghem. Two relatively recent songs that made use of the plaintiff refrain are the Christian hymn, My God Loves Me and the song Can't Help Falling in Love, which was performed by Elvis Presley in the film, Blue Hawaii. This arrangement is not technically difficult, but it does require discipline and interpretation. As in the original, there are two key changes, F to A-flat and then back to F. The time signature has been changed from Martini’s 6/8 to ¾ but retains all relative note values. Trumpet 1 plays the melody with occasional harmony from Trumpet 2. Horn in F provides arpeggio accompaniment throughout most of the song, with some help from Tuba and Trombone. With respect to high and low notes: Trumpet 1 has one A5 grace note (to a G5 quarter note); Trumpet 2 has three above-staff quarter notes in a row, A5, B5 and A5; Trombone has one F4; and Tuba has a number of F1 notes and one section of octave jumps involving F2 to F3 and A2 to A3. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 51 seconds.
