In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score. An excellent way to learn new repertoire, traditional American forms and some 21st century musical elements all at once! Every other piece uses the natural minor scale, which, in A minor, is all white keys. Not bad at all ! in between, there are examples of the melodic minor, ascending and descending, the harmonic minor, and the Dorian mode. March, NO accidentals other than the ones required to form the particular scale being used. Still not too bad March, Waltz, Ballad, Ostinato, Hornpipe, and Theme, in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, and 7/8, respectively. One suite can use these related or incremental elements and still have variety within a limited musical range. An object lesson in economy of materials, American-style. Each piece runs less than 3 mins, except the ballad, which the only slow selection. Audio clip is the Hornpipe. MBB.

The virtuoso 24 variations on a theme by the Mainz court Kapellmeister Vincenzo Righini were the first of Beethovenâ€™s works to be published by Schott in 1791 (plate number 145). The theme comes from the collection â€˜XII Ariette Italianeâ€™ for voice and piano (plate number 92), published by Schott in 1788. The collaboration with Beethoven did not continue until around 35 years later with the operas 121b to 128 and 131 (including the Missa solemnis and the 9th Symphony). Beethovenâ€™s last words, according to Anton Schindler, also connected Beethoven with the publishing house (â€˜Too bad, too lateâ€™): the delivery of the Rhein wine, ordered from Schott following his doctorâ€™s advice, only reached him on his deathbed.
