The hazy intro makes for a mysterious beginning for the classic track, and then gets into the main funk groove, with lots of time to feature the male vocalist. Then after a tenor solo and shout chorus, the charts ends on a pensive note and takes a different turn. Hope you enjoy this fun arrangement! Kopprasch also wrote another set of etudes in a similar style - Op. 5 for High Horn. These lesser known studies were written for 'high horn' which meant, in the 1830s, specialized players and instruments. Most modern horn players will find these studies too high for everyday use. This carefully edited arrangement takes all of the 60 studies down a 4th. This puts them in the same range as the popular Op. 6 Low Horn studies and makes them accessible to all level of horn player. The first of its kind, and the first entry in the Accessible Accompaniments library’s collection of small-hand-optimized song literature publications, this is Richard Strauss’s beloved “Zueignung,†from Acht Gedichte, op. 10 (1885), optimized (but not simplified) for the needs of collaborative pianists with small hands. “Small†is generally understood to be just an octave in span, with limited capacity to grab chord tones within a blocked octave aside from the occasional inner fifth.This edition was inspired by Boosey’s excellent small-hand edition of Frank Bridge’s “Love Went A-Riding†(erroneously labeled “simplified†on the front matter), which thins the large chords that would be problematic or impossible for a barely-an-8ve-reach collaborative pianist to play without adding musically inappropriate rolls or breaks, but also preserves the musical content and grammatically accurate voice-leading. Given that Strauss’s op. 10 collection is much more widespread on today’s concert programs than the Bridge, and given that average conservatory pianist heights and hand sizes have dropped significantly in the 20th and 21st centuries, the need for a similar adaptation in at least some of the op. 10 songs is obvious. William Blake (1757-1827), a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age, published the lyric poem The Lamb in his collection, Songs of Innocence, in 1789.The Lamb is presented as from the viewpoint of, and in the voice of, a child. In the first stanza, the child asks the lamb if it knows its Creator; in the second, it tells the creature, by means of metaphor, that its Creator is the Lord Jesus Christ, who like the lamb took on the flesh of a created being, “little,†“meek,†and “mild.†The child declares that he/she shares with the creature the name of the One who is, in Christian belief, both the sacrificial Lamb and the Shepherd of his flock. Published by ArrangeMe (A0.1035856). This is the lead sheet version of Jake Smolowe's recording of Angels We Have Heard on High, from his 2021 album Christmas Solo: Informal, Improvised. The chart includes the lead melody line, detailed chord symbols throughout, and a notated piano intro/interlude. Length: 2 pages Notes from Jake: This arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High is kind of an ode to Brad Mehldau’s many jazz waltz arrangements over the years (for example, She’s Leaving Home, from Day is Done). I wanted to capture the feel of Mehldau’s classic trio waltzes, not just the piano but the drums and bass too. The A sections feature a constantly rising chord progression, with slight differences in chord quality between the first two A’s, and then the B sections highlight some more dramatic reharmonizations as well as a dichotomy between straight-eighths/behind the beat melody and swung accompaniment. The intro, which also serves as the outro vamp as well as an interlude between choruses, includes a bell-like theme that I hope instantly conjures up the Christmas/holiday spirit. Tips for Performance: The intro/interlude/outro can be tricky! I encourage watching the YouTube video and or/listening to the mp3 to get a sense of the timing for the fingering switches and pedaling.
