This popular standard song recorded by vocalist Nat King Cole in 1951 sold a million records. He considered it one of his favorites and it was number one on the Billboard Charts for many weeks. I was inspired to create this piano arrangement of TOO YOUNG for my dear friends Evelyn and Carlo who celebrate their wedding anniversary on September 1, 2021. It was their song 65 years ago. This intermediate piano solo arrangement is written in the key of C; not the original key, but one that may be easier for some piano students. It is clearly and carefully notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, pedal indications, chord identifications and appropriate musical terms for playing. The left hand sometimes incorporates arpeggiated patterns made up of 9ths while the right hand utilizes traditional chords and intervals with a touch of jazz harmony. This piano arrangement sounds artistic and impressive, a wonderful selection, ideal for teaching, recitals and enjoyment. Robert Van Horne is a member of ASCAP. And though each sequence doesn’t have specific programmatic connotations, teachers and students should use their imagination as to what the spy protagonist has gotten mixed up in! The form is roughly an A-B-C-A-B-Coda. There is much repetition in repeated sections to not add too much extra material for younger players to learn. There are also a few “Easter eggs†of semi-quotes buried within. Spy Game would be a great programming choice to add some excitement and intrigue to the young band concert!This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. Sam, You Made the Pants Too Long is a very humorous song about a tailor that made a client a perfect outfit except for one minor detail, ..... the pants were too long!! This song follows the pattern of a Recitative-Aria. The first dozen bars are rather declamatory exclaiming the problem. This story is immediately elaborated in the shuffle rhythm of the song.This arrangement tries to capture the humor and irony of the lyrics. A good performance will require a lot of wit and dynamism. The Recitative can be done very freely, but the Song (Aria) need to keep a steady rhythm with a lot of punch at the climax points. Play the middle section of the song in a more relaxed manner and in the final repetition of the main theme be your most expressive. End strong. This arrangement therefore has a lot of teaching value making students use their imagination in crafting a good interpretation and telling a story. Sam , You Made the Pants Too Long is a great novelty piece for a number that would especially stand out at a recital. It's also a great piece for a social gathering.
