My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. The nine songs after poems by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) were commissioned by the Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn. Mahler was already planning a late Romantic cantata entitled Das klagende Lied shortly after beginning his studies at the Vienna Conservatory in 1878, for which he conceived a three-part cycle of poems for his own setting. When Mahler completed the score in October 1880, he was already at the beginning of a great conducting career. The quality of the poem could be debated, especially in view of the successful Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen from 1883 and 1884; and yet the ballad, inspired by a mixture of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and the poet Ludwig Bechstein, reflects almost the complete range of voices of Mahler's first great creative period, from the songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the Fourth Symphony. At the special request of mezzo-soprano Chrisianne Stotijn and pianist Joseph Breinl, the complete text of the plaintive song was newly set to music. A particular challenge of the new setting of Gustav Mahler's poems consisted for me above all in compromising the genial imperfection of the poetry with a compositional aesthetic that emphasizes precisely the unrhymed, edgy and clichÃ©d as its own quality and does not seek to conceal it. In doing so, it seemed wise and prudent to me, not only for reasons of historical distance(ization), not to implement an intersubjective subjectability to the songs. The serious and ballad-like basic tone was to be preserved, the way in which the text was implemented stems from the idea of a thoroughly pluralistic and therefore stylistic tightrope walk, which in a kind of music about music reflects the relationship to one's own tradition and its changing values and thus repeats the phenomenon of Mahler per se in the context of the 21st century.

The score was composed by Hans Zimmer in 2006.The Kraken: Another track arranged in concert suite fashion, this track consists of various cues for when the Kraken attacks and destroys the Edinburgh Trader ship, as well as when it attacks the Black Pearl toward the end of the movie. It is composed of three primary themes, two of which also represent the Flying Dutchman and its crew. One of the themes, played mainly by organ, bears a similarity to Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, although it could be seen as a tribute. Many other small themes can be heard throughout the track.
