Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (French: Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) is a traditional Christmas carol originating from the Provence region of France. The carol dates back to the 17th century. It is associated with the tradition of children in Provence dressing as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve while singing the carol. The Carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabella, who discover the baby Jesus in a stable and run to inform the villagers, urging them to come quietly not to disturb the sleeping child. The song's melody is believed to have originated as a lively dance tune from as early as the 14th century, and French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier later adapted it for a drinking song. The lyrics were first associated with this melody in a collection of French carols in 1901, transcribed by Julien Tiersot. Edward Cuthbert Nunn made the most popular English adaptation in the late 19th century. Despite its historical roots and charming melody, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is considered one of the lesser-known carols outside of France. Still, it remains a beloved part of Christmas celebrations in the Provence region.

It was first published as a carol in France in 1553. The words were written by Emile Blémont, based on a much earlier folk text: it tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabelle, who go to milk their cows in a cowshed near Bethlehem. When they get there, they find Jesus asleep in the hay ... and you know the rest of the story. To this day, children in the Provence region dress up as shepherds and milkmaids, and carry torches to Midnight Mass while singing the carol. A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

The third, “Touro-Louro-Louro!†comes from the Provence region of southeastern France.Each tune bears an onomatopoetic title (a word that phonetically imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes): The refrain “fum, fum, fum†in the Catalan carol is an onomatopoeia for the strumming of a guitar. “Pat-a-pan†— the title of the Burgundian carol — imitates the sound of a drum being struck. “Touro-louro-louro!†— the title of the Provencal carol — suggests the singing of birds. This work tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. If I were still conducting regularly, this would certainly be on my list as a Christmas concert opener - it sets the energy and mood most effectively. The scoring is terrific.
