David Berlin #3559075. Published by David Berlin (A0.958083). This collection of folk melodies from Ireland can be studied independently or in a variety of groupings. While created in open scoring for beginning and young instrumentalists, these pieces could be used by anyone. They are accessible with as few as two players and as many as are available in almost any combination of instruments. The folk melodies are also excellent to use as warm-ups because they can serve the purpose while also providing aesthetic value. The teacher is encouraged to be flexible and creative with them. Directors are encouraged to perform these in various combinations and sets. Feel free to be creative. For example, repeats could be added featuring various soloists and/or small groupings in contrast with the full group (as in a concerto.) Creativity could be promoted by allowing students to make suggestions pertaining to the formal organization of the material. In addition to decisions as to which pieces to perform directors are encouraged to involve students in making creative decisions such as which ones to put together, which phrases to repeat in various combinations and instrumental subsets and other appropriate aesthetic decisions. Each piece could function as a locus for branching into various content areas in connection with social studies, integrated curriculum and/or inquiry. Many of the melodies have very smooth and conjunct voice leading making them excellent for solfege/sight-reading training. These melodies are offered as a resource for the teacher to use in a variety of ways and possibilities are unlimited. Lyrics are readily available online.

Part 2 includes Carols of Suite 1225, What Child Is This?,  Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells, and Silent Night.  Christmas Suite 1225 uses fingerstyle classical guitar, with a fresh chordal interpretation, moving bass and internal lines, and other distinctive stylistic features. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. This charming, original musical pageant retells the Christmas Story through the eyes of the angels and reminds us to always trust in God. In That’s How the Story Goes, the archangels Michael and Raphael are hosting a heavenly campfire, and all the youngest angels want to hear the Christmas Story. Happy to oblige, the other archangels take turns telling their parts of the story. Gabriel tells of visiting Mary, Uriel tells of visiting Joseph, Sealtiel & Jehudiel tell of their visit to the shepherds, and Barachiel tells of visiting the three wise men in their dreams to warn them about King Herod. The musical features a simple script with minimal memorization which allows for maximum flexibility with age-range, cast size, and rehearsal time-- the longer, adapted scripture readings may be read from a book or binder. Each part of the story is followed by an original song sung by the entire cast. Costumes, sets, and props are also minimal, and there are no scene changes, which allow this show to be staged in any space, including traditional church sanctuaries. Approximate performance time 30 minutes That’s How the Story Goes features five original songs written and arranged for school-aged children by Joanna Mills. The songs are all set in an accessible range for young children, and feature simple tunes which are easy to learn. This package contains two versions of each song; an easy unison version (with optional easy descant or counterpoint harmonies on the final chorus), and a 2-part choir version, which features simple, easy-to-learn harmonies. This allows you to mix and match your arrangements to suit the abilities of your singers and your rehearsal time constraints. For those students who do not read music, the lyrics are included in the script. The piano accompaniments are at an intermediate level and guitar chords are included, which allows older youth to participate as musicians (or allows experienced accompanists to learn them quickly). Published by Vanessa Klassen (A0.1135165). “Just a Closer Walk with Thee†dates back to the southern African-American churches of the nineteenth century, frequently being performed as part of a traditional New Orleans-style funeral march. Composer Kenneth Morris heard a train station porter singing the song while traveling from Kansas City to Chicago in 1940. The music became so prominent in his mind that Morris exited his train and took a different train back to the previous station to ask the porter to sing it again. Morris wrote down the music and lyrics and had the song published. The song soon became a standard in both the gospel and jazz genres and has since been recorded by numerous artists. The original author or composer is unknown. This arrangement for clarinet quintet is closely based on Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of the song which was featured on her 1967 album, “Brighten the Corner.†Ella’s voice is represented in the Clarinet 1 part which has been transcribed exactly as she sung. There is also a simplified Clarinet 1 part which is easier to read and allows the soloist more freedom to embellish as desired. The accompanying parts are the background vocals and upright bass, with the light piano riffs in the E♠Clarinet part. The E♠part may be omitted for an easier quartet version. The biggest challenge in this arrangement is the balance as the solo is often in the lower register of the clarinet (below the break).

Once on board the train, the boy meets other children from various backgrounds who are all wanting to see Santa, as well as a magical train crew, headed by the Conductor. 'The Polar Express' stars Tom Hanks, providing voices and motion-capture for 6 characters, including the Conductor and Santa Claus. With an incredible original soundtrack from Hollywood legend Alan Silvestri, combined with other iconic Christmas recordings, 'The Polar Express' became an instant hit, and has embedded itself in Christmas popular culture.'When Christmas Comes To Town' is performed in the film by the characters Billy the Lonely Boy and Hero Girl, with singing voices provided by Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore, and tells the story of their differing perspectives of Christmas, with a shared desire to see Santa. This new arrangement from Matt Shaw is scored for two solo Tenor Horns with brass band accompaniment (including a tutti 2nd horn part), and captures all the magic and innocence of the original song, whilst being intentionally scored to be approachable and playable by bands of all levels. The solo lines are scored within a sensible range, and are supported by warm chords from the middle and lower band, with a continuous magical presence from the percussion writing. Originally arranged for, and performed by, the Wingates Brass Band, this arrangement promises to be a fantastic new addition to any band Christmas programme, as both a new and accessible feature and an instant crowd pleaser. The Floral Dance is a popular English song describing the annual Furry Dance in Helston, Cornwall.The music and lyric were written in 1911 by Kate Emily Barkley (Katie) Moss (1881-1947) who was a professional violinist, pianist and concert singer. She was brought up in London and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. The song tells the story of an incident that apparently actually happened to Moss herself on a visit to Helston during the springtime 'Furry Dance' celebrations and the song was reportedly written directly afterwards as she was going home on the train. The songbook cover states that the music was founded on an old Cornish air. Katie introduces the original Furry Dance tune in the piano part just as the singer is describing the sound of the band, with its cornet, clarinet and big trombone; fiddle, cello, big bass drum; bassoon, flute and euphonium. In 1978, Terry Wogan recorded a version which reached #21 in the same chart.[3] Wogan's version was accompanied by the Hanwell Band, and omitted the final verse containing the climax to the story. On Top of the Pops, Wogan sang it live to a backing track.[4] A version of the song was prominently featured near the beginning of the 1996 film, Brassed Off.In 2016, a campaign for Christmas Number One was launched for Terry Wogan's version of The Floral Dance after his death.
