During these turbulent times, the overall sound of this song reminds me of the constant optimistic yet strongly resolute aura of John Lewis, Civil Rights leader and Congressman; may he rest in peace. It is 38 measures long, Piano1 being more difficult due to the constant triplets. You can modify the piece by substituting a guitar for the Piano1 right hand, and a flute for the Piano1 left hand, using Piano2 as melody and accompaniment. Bits and pieces of the melody constantly come in and out, with episodes of dissonance, in part and in full, throughout the piece, making it sound a little Bach like.

This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep.The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective.The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. Back in 2019, my student Giovanni was having trouble with 6/8 meter. At the time I was using the rhythm solfège of Ba for dotted quarter notes in 6/8. So one lesson, while frustrated with rhythms he exclaimed Ba Humbug! and I couldn't stop laughing! It inspired me to write this cello trio for him and his cello friends to play, honoring that frustration and giving another opportunity to practice 6/8!All 3 cello parts are at an intermediate level, making it a great early ensemble piece for student cellists.The parts were designed with neurodiverse learners in mind with well spaced notes and no unnecessary markings added. The cello parts and score are included as PDFs that are easily read on a tablet or printed on US letter or A4 paper without any need for reformatting.

It is a dance of unbridled joy to celebrate a rich harvest of nature's bounty. In 2013, I transcribed it from my private archive of old dusty audio tapes no one had ever heard, and with the CarsonValley Sinfonia in mind, revised it for string orchestra without winds.1995 was a low period in my life. The pressure from my job in the technology industry was relentless, and personal relationships at that time sometimes brought emotional pain instead of solace and comfort. Grasping for any ray of hope to illuminate the gloom, I turned back to my original love: music.Immersing myself deeply in the process of music creation, I rediscovered not only a talent for composition, but even more importantly tapped into the creative source of uplift, joy, and energy, the source of all gifts, that is available to every sincere person. During those years, composing music was a vital lifeline. Like the powerful beam of the rescuer's flashlight guiding you toward the daylight when you are emerging from a dark cave. Like a new baby being born. Now a great many years later, life now brimming with music and friends, and having put old sorrows far behind me, music from that time of troubles still fills me with the same joy as when I composed it, and I hope it uplifts you.Harvest Dance is dedicated to my friend, composer John O'Neill, with profound appreciation for his encouragement, as well as helping me learn the practicalities of arranging for a string orchestra.
