George Brandon: Two Dream Poems (2020) for Soprano and Piano This piece consists of musical settings of two 20th century poems concerning the dream state: one by the American poet Gary Snyder; the other by Mavash Sabet from Iran. Gary Snyder’s poem, “Maudgalyayana Saw Hellâ€, is a complex and multilayered portrayal of a passage through the dream state, beginning with falling asleep and ending with waking up. At the same time as it describes a mythical journey and an inward psychological journey, it also presents a Buddhist metaphysical perspective in which the whole of life, and our ordinary sense of reality, appear and are questioned as dream states as well. At the time that Mavash Sabet wrote her poem “Hello Again†she was a political prisoner sentenced to twenty years in prison for her religious and educational activities. on behalf of the Bahai faith, a religion which is persecuted by Iran's theocratic government. “Hello Againâ€, from her book Prison Poems, describes a dream experience that renewed her inner sense of freedom despite being incarcerated, and provided her with strength and hope for the future. Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas. His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story. The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. Both contain essential truths still evident in today's turbulent times.Although the text expresses sentiments that might be the stuff of childhood and naiveté, the music is turbulent, perhaps hinting at the cynicism of today's world. This was inspired by the story of a homeless man my grandmother met in her neighbourhood when she was young. Everyone thought he was insane but my grandmother did not think so since he always carried poetry writings and artworks with him wherever he went. My grandmother befriended him and during one of their conversations on the street he told her that he spent his life writing poems, drew portraits of the women he loved, and acknowledges that “life is nothing but a dream”. One day this homeless man disappeared and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that he was rumoured to have passed away one rainy night inside an abandoned house which was his childhood home. This piece intends to describe that man’s thoughts and feelings during his final moments: his lifetime memories, his final acceptance, and true inner peace before saying goodbye to this world.

This album takes its title from the  CD, Gordon Mizzi, Saints and Fireworks that has been recorded by Carlos Bonell, one of today's most celebrated guitarists and which is available from Spearhead Music. The individual track recordings are also available as downloads from itunes, amazon.com and other sites.This album contains a diverse collection of original works as well as transcriptions of Renaissance and Maltese folk music by Gordon Mizzi. The Branles de Malte by Jean d'Estr+¬e were originally composed by the French Knights of St. John in Malta in 1551 for the Dauphin of France. Gordon Mizzi has made guitar transcriptions of these five dances and this is the first time that they are being published. The Branles de Malte by Adrian Le Roy are also included. There are a number of original compositions. Saints and Fireworks, a piece in two movements, vividly represents Malta's village festas. Island Scenes are six musical portraits of towns and villages dotting the landscape of Malta.They include Valletta- Barrakka Gardens, San Giljan-After the Feast, Mdina- Citt+á Notabile, the dreamy Comino-The Blue Lagoon, Sliema- The Tower, and the pulsatingly brash Paceville -Sin City. Three Love Poems : Hula, Lahaina and Hana are influences from Hawaii. There are also two cradle songs Child Don't Cry and Ninna Nanna as well as folk inspired melodies such as Night Crossing and il- Maltija. The guitarist will find a veritable pot pourri of scents and sounds in this album.

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. Something about the words and the way the piece ends resonated with a young composer, just discovering his voice. There is an easiness in the words—not one is greater than two syllables—yet, the poet demands of the Tireless Great…HEAR ME AND COVER ME. It is both too grand to understand and too simple to miss. In performing this piece, I hope you find peace and stillness, love and relief. “Cover me in dusk and dust and dreams.†Send me a recording.
