When Hans Werner Henze received a commission to instrument early lieder by Richard Wagner at the end of the 1990s, he realised that he could not simply recreate the piano part in a scoring for classical-romantic orchestra. ’It was not only my wish but also a necessity to progress much further than the path I had taken in my Wesendonck arrangements if this operation was not to prove to be an entirely superfluous exercise. Numerous changes have therefore presented themselves during this process, not arbitrarily, but out of a certain artistic curiosity: for example changes of metre, tonal and tessitura transformations and the realisation and completion of the two fragments ’Extase’ and ’La tombe dit à la rose’. Despite this, he deliberately set out to study Wagner's music. Tristan und Isolde was the opera Henze found most accessible and it was therefore the Wesendonck-Lieder, dating from 1858 with their clear affinity to the harmony of Tristan, which became Henze’s focal point of interest. In his arrangements he was aiming 'to evoke the pre-Tristan state. For this reason, I have selected a small ensemble consisting of seven wind instruments, two horns, harp and small string orchestra to retain the preliminary study character of these Lieder. At the same time however, I am attempting to permit the Tristanesque tone which is already inherent in the piano version to unfold through harmonic separation.' - Hans Werner Henze.

The scattered songs are songs from various collections or individual songs. The two songs composed after Ernst Jandl were written as part of the festivities for the 70th birthday of jazz pianist and composer Dieter Glawischnig. The song composed after Ossip Mandelstamm is part of a cycle of various Russian poems composed for St. Petersburg, the settings of which were commissioned from several composers living in Hamburg. Of the seven orchestral songs composed in 1986 after Attila Jozsef, only the first, fourth, sixth and seventh songs were included in this collection and arranged for voice and piano. The songs before 1985, as well as numerous occasional compositions from the period between 1985 and 2000, have not been published. Some songs, including the two haikus for soprano and piano from 1983 and several chansons, including one for the cabaret artist Sissy Perlinger, have been lost over the years.

I inadvertently discovered that the poet Friedrich Rückert who penned Kindertodtenlieder (yes, with a d ... LOL!) wrote 400-plus of these KTL poems after his two youngest children died of scarlet fever. I bought the book @ Amazon. After plowing through 442 of them, I winnowed it down to ten poems for my song cycle. It is scored for soprano and piano. NB: I cannot afford an orchestra, and it would be too much unnecessary work. LOL!!! The entire song cycle has a duration of ca. 35 minutes. It ends like a mechanical music box while the soprano sings a lullaby. Sleep is of course a perfect metaphor for being dead. Hebrew.Viktor Ullmann composed his choral arrangements of Hebrew, Yiddish and Chassidic songs in the ghetto of Theresienstadt in 1943/1944. In the function of “Head of the Studio for New Musicâ€, Ullmann made a significant contribution to the so-called “leisure activities†in the ghetto. The works were evidently intended for the repertoire of the various choirs at Theresienstadt, including children’s choirs such as the Karel Vrbas Youth Choir in which Ullmann’s son Max also sang. There is no evidence to confirm that Ullmann’s choral works were actually performed in Theresienstadt, for example in one of the frequent concerts given by Rafael Schächter’s choir of up to a hundred voices (cf. Milan Kuna, Musik an der Grenze des Lebens, 21998. p.313). The German translations below first appeared in the song book Makkabi-Liederbuch published in Berlin in 1930 (2nd edition 1935) which was available to Viktor Ullmann as a source for the melodies and text orthography for his choral arrangements in Theresienstadt.

Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1511369). Appreciation for the quality and charm of Clara Schumann’s music has increased in recent years as it has become better known. She was the daughter and prize pupil of the celebrated piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, and she toured internationally by her early teens. Wieck also taught Robert Schumann, but bitterly opposed the liaison of Robert and Clara, aware that it would cause him to lose control of her career and the income it generated. The two were able to marry only after a long court battle with Wieck.In the 40 years that Clara survived Robert, she composed very little, devoting her energy to performance, and to securing Robert’s musical legacy. Nobody can blame her for this, especially as performing was a far more secure way to support her large family. But we can still regret that she did not compose more, given the excellence of the small body of work we have. This set includes arrangements of two piano pieces from her Opus 15, Vier flüchtige Stücke (Four Fleeting Pieces), and two Lieder for voice and piano from her Opus 13, Der Mond kommt still gegangen (The Moon Comes Quietly) and Liebeszauber (Love’s Spell). Clara’s musical forms are generally more conventional than Robert’s, but she is capable of bold harmonies and modulations, often in the middle sections of her piano pieces. Opus 15, No. 3, the third of this set, is an example, with some rhythmic challenges to the quartet. Cypress Publishing offers other works by Clara Schumann arranged for string quartet under “Two Pieces by Clara Schumann” (from Op. 15 and Op. 21), and her wonderful song Liebst du um Schönheit (If You Love for Beauty), paired with Robert’s great Mondnacht (Moonlit Night) as “Two Songs by the Schumanns”.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. German.When Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel was premiered on 23 December 1893 in Weimar conducted by Richard Strauss, the work could look back on an extensive history of origin.Humperdinck’s younger sister Adelheid Wette (born in 1858) had displayed a great interest in literature in her youth and written a variety of poems for special occasions. In 1888, she wrote a fairy tale entitled Schneewittchen [Snow White] and her brother supplied some songs for this piece. Further fairy tale collaborations followed which were customarily performed within the family circle, and the first draft of the Hänsel und Gretel was begun in 1890. Adelheid’s husband would be celebrating his 34th birthday on 16 May of this year and his wife intended to surprise him with a performance of her version of this fairy tale. Her brother was allotted the task of composing the accompanying songs and, a month before the birthday, she wrote a letter to him in Mainz where Engelbert Humperdinck was among other activities working as an editor for the Schott publishing house, ordering a “very pretty folkloric†Tanzlied [Dance song], a Waldlied [Forest song] (or Echolied [Echo song]), a Schlummerlied [Lullaby] and a Kickericki-Lied [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] from her “dear sugar-sweet little brother... Engel-Bärtchen [angel beard]â€. She enclosed the corresponding verses with the letter and “for fun†also provided her own invented melody for the Schlummerlied and rhythmic suggestions for the Tanzlied. Humperdinck went straight to work and, as related in an entry in his diary, was already able to play the songs to the director of the publishing house, Dr Ludwig Strecker, by 19 April.This was the history of origin of the four songs published for the first time edited in form of their original versions in this edition Brüderchen komm’ tanz’ mit mir, Wer ruft mir im Walde doch alles nach, In den Zweigen die Vögelein und Tirelireli! ‘s ist nicht mehr früh “for two children’s voices and piano accompaniment†(see manuscript1). In his reply letter to his sister in which the fair copy of the songs were enclosed, Humperdinck wrote: “As you see, the pitch of the melodies is not too high and I have incorporated your melodies. Let me know soon whether you like the little songs. By the way, the ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ can also be sung on one note(E flat) instead of on the four notes of the chord.â€The first performance of the song-play was held as planned within the family circle with Wettes’ two eldest daughters in the two principle roles. Spurred on by the success of the family performance, initial plans were forged to adapt the song-play into a singspiel with numerous musical numbers and rhymed dialogues; Hermann Wette participated in a draft of the text. The particell of this singspiel had been completed by Christmas 1890. Hugo Wolf and a few others however advised the composer to extend the singspiel into a through-composed fairy tale opera. Humperdinck followed this advice and worked on what he ironically termed as a “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel“ [sacred festive play for the nursery] during the next two summers in Bayreuth. Tanzliedchen [Dance song] and Morgenweckruf [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] were eventually included in the opera in a modified form.Bevor Engelbert Humperdincks Märchenoper Hänsel und Gretel zum Welterfolg wurde, hatte das Werk bereits eine vielschichtige Entstehungsgeschichte hinter sich. Humperdincks Schwester Adelheid Wette schrieb 1890 ein gereimtes Märchenspiel gleichen Namens, welches sie gemeinsam mit ihren Töchtern im Familienkreis aufführte. Ihr Bruder hatte die entsprechenden vier Lieder dazu beigesteuert. Während Brüderchen, komm tanz mit mir und Tirelireli in veränderter Form auch in die spätere Märchenoper eingingen, existieren das Schlummerliedchen und das Echo im Walde exklusiv in dieser Urfassung von Humperdincks Hänsel und Gretel. Diese Ausgabe umfasst Humperdincks vier ursprüngliche Lieder, die in dieser Fassung erstmals in editierter Form veröffentlicht werden, ebenso wie den vollständigen Text von Adelheid Wettes Liederspiel aus dem Jahr 1890.
