Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1141386). I composed my Invention No. 3 in C minor for two voices during the Spring of 2012. The motive is intriguing as the first twelve notes are immediately followed by their inversion after a drop of a seventh to form a contrapuntal palindrome. This inversion is followed by an octave leap upwards to D that circles back to the starting note C. In bar 3, the lower voice introduces the motive a fourth lower at the dominant as the upper voice states the countermotive which concludes in bar 4 with an augmented tonal version of the descending scale run from the original motive. The ensuing episode in bars 5-8 is constructed from fragments of the motive in the upper voice accompanied by an embellished form of the countermotive in the lower voice. A series of ascending broken thirds accompanied by a rising scale run cadences in the tonic key of C minor in bar 10 before abruptly redirecting to G minor in bar 11. At this juncture, the motive and countermotive are restated in their inversions. The episodic sequence from bars 5-9 is also stated in an inverted form in bars 13-17. In bar 18, the motive is stated by the upper voice in G minor with the countermotive now in the lower voice. This formula is repeated a whole step lower in F minor in bars 20-21 followed by the modulation sequence from bars 5-8 reprised with the voices exchanging places. In bar 27, a cadence in F minor redirects back to C major in bar 28 followed by a modulation sequence culminating in C minor in bar 30 that cadences to a final Picardy Third in bar 32.

The Inventions and Sinfonias, BWV 772â??801, also known as the Two- and Three- Part Inventions, are a collection of thirty short keyboard compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685â??1750): 15 inventions, which are two-part contrapuntal pieces, and 15 sinfonias, which are three-part contrapuntal pieces. They were originally written as musical exercises for his students. Bach titled the collection: Forth right instruction, where with lovers of the clavier, especially those desirous of learning, are shown in a clear way not only 1) to learn to play two voices clearly, but also after further progress 2) to deal correctly and well with three obbligato parts, moreover at the same time to obtain not only good ideas, but also to carry them out well, but most of all to achieve a cantabile style of playing, and thereby to acquire a strong foretaste of composition. The two groups of pieces are both arranged in order of ascending key, each group covering eight major and seven minor keys. Surprisingly there are very few collections which deal systematically with this important theme. In these two books Fritz Emonts has written a kind of 'Method of Contrapuntal Piano Playing' which may accompany piano tuition over a period of several years. Book 1 begins with easier pieces from the repertoire (ostinato forms, canons, pieces with walking bass) and takes us through easy dance movements up to the Inventions by J. S. Bach. Book 2 offers a selection of repertoire on a rather higher level, from Baroque to Romantic. The pieces are grouped systematically, to distinguish three ways in which parts are distributed.

In April 1989, I sketched a simpler and shorter version of this three-voice Sinfonia as my final exam for my tonal counterpoint class with Professor Richard Wilson at Vassar College. Although granted two weeks to complete this assignment, I delayed starting my sketch until the evening before it was due. I finalized it by 1 AM the following morning in the Victorian-style Rose Parlor in the Main Building. In November 2020, I extensively revised and lengthened this three-voice Sinfonia with the goal of experimenting more extensively with various contrapuntal devices such as augmentation, diminution, stretto, inversion, and retrograde motion.

It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten.The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though.The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire.
