Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother, he gives her wine laced with mandragora and makes his escape before daybreak. The grisly tale provided the composer many opportunities for dramatic characterisation. The use of a narrator necessitated an episodic structure in which the music captures the atmosphere suggested by the text, and mirrors the different moods as the journey unfolds and the three characters live out their different fates.The title Deadly Pleasures was suggested by the content of D.M. Thomas’s dramatic poem on an imagined episode in the life of Cleopatra. Cleopatra offers any three men from her royal court a night of unbridled passion, in return for which they must forfeit their lives the next morning. Three men step forward, the last of which (unbeknownst to all) is the son she had by her brother Ptolemy, whom she gave away at birth. Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother he gives her wine laced with the drug mandragora and escapes his grisly death before daybreak. The music of Deadly Pleasures skilfully captures the diff erent episodic moods of the text as the journey unfolds, and the three characters live out their diff erent fates.

Passacaille in G minor by Handel: This is the original Handel Theme in G minor with 4 of Handel's variations and the 2 variations from the recent popular Halvorsen version transcribed to G minor. My student liked the Halvorsen version but he was unaware that this was originally a piece by Handel. So I took my favorite variations and original theme in G minor and combined it with 2 of the Halvorsen variations. The Halvorsen variations are in F minor, so I transcribed them to G minor. He performed it for an annual piano incentive program in New Jersey and it was well received and he got a lovely evaluation from the judge on his performance. The Handel in its entirerty, in my opinion, gets a bit too repetitive and so does the Halvorsen in its entirety. So combining a little of the new style into the Baroque style made for an over all more interesting perfromance. Nothing has been simplified. This is Handel and Halvorsen's writing, just put all in one key and does not include all their variations.

The Addamses are an eccentric old-money clan who delight in the macabre and are seemingly unaware or unconcerned that other people find them bizarre or frightening. The family members were unnamed until the 1960s. Matriarch Morticia and daughter Wednesday received their names when a licensed doll collection was released in 1962; patriarch Gomez and son Pugsley were named when the 1964 television seriesdebuted.The Addams Family consists of Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children, Wednesday and Pugsley, and close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama,their butler Lurch, and Pugsley's pet octopus, Aristotle. The dimly seen Thing (later a disembodied hand) was introduced in 1954, and Gomez's Cousin Itt, Morticia's pet lion Kitty Kat and Morticia's carnivorous plant Cleopatra in 1964. Pubert Addams, Wednesday and Pugsley's infant brother, was introduced in the 1993 film Addams Family Values.

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1440114). Tom Lehrer is an American musician, singer-songwriter, satirist, and mathematician. He recorded pithy and humorous songs that became popular in the 1950s and 60s, often parodying popular musical forms, though they usually had original melodies (an exception is The Elements, in which he set the names of the chemical elements to the tune of the Major-General's Song from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance'). Lehrer's early performances dealt with non-topical subjects and black humour in songs such as the 'vernal' waltz, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, which was recorded for the album 'An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer' in March 1959. The lyrics refer to killing pigeons with cyanide-coated peanuts and strychnine-treated corn. The latter method was used by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to control pigeon populations in Boston public areas during the 1950s. Available for concert band for the first time, this lovely melody deserves to be heard out in the open air to be enjoyed by those passing by, maybe unaware of the sinister nature of the song!

The text for Not but a Seed…, which was written by the composer, follows the growth of tree from a single seed, through its existence as a full-grown member of the forest around it. In the mind of the author/composer, this growth exists as a metaphor for two of the most important elements of life, family and the process of artistic creation. In each, the tiniest of particles is created from elements that it is initially unaware of. Over time, these tiny elements grow to become able to foster creation of their own, ultimately connecting into a single unending web. Musically, this concept is dealt with during the course of the piece, where the opening chord is used as a catalyst for melodic and harmonic expansion throughout. This sonority is also used at important goal points throughout the setting of the three–stanza text. The piece is set for SATB choir, with each section occasionally splitting by half. The work includes rich harmonies throughout, as well as melodic moments for each voice part to shine through. The clear linear progress of each voice, combined with the recurring sonorities mentioned above make this piece a rewarding and accessible musical undertaking. A rehearsal piano reduction is included in the vocal score.

Composed during the pandemic, this setting for male chorus and piano of Thomas Hardy's poem, The Darkling Thrush begins with a bleak picture of a barren and hostile landscape in winter. Then, as the voices narrate the sudden appearance of an agèd thrush, frail, gaunt, and small who floods the air with joyous singing, the piano accompaniment bursts into a reel. The final stanza muses that the cause for the bird's ecstatic sounds must have been some blessed hope whereof he knew and I was unaware. (Also available for SAB -- check that version for a different audio excerpt.).

This song pays homage to “Honey Bun†from the classic 1949 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: South Pacific. Like its forerunner, “The Sharpest Smile†represents a “show within a show†moment. Both “Honey Bun†and “The Sharpest Smile†derive their comedy from the age-old, vaudevillian gimmick of a girl pretending to be a boy and vice versa. In the context of the Love Birds script, “Vera†(a female parrot) is costumed as a 1920s (male) gangster talking to “his†gangster friends. “The Gangster†character explains that “he†has met a wonderful girl (named “Pearlâ€), so don’t expect to see “him†around as much; or lyrics to that effect. Later in the number, we learn that “Pearl†is in fact a hungry crocodile dressed in a lady’s bikini costume (i.e. two coconuts strung together for the top – also an homage to “Honey Bunâ€). Pearl constantly tries to take a bite out of the Gangster Parrot who is blissfully unaware of the threat. This is a comedy song about mismatched relationships, but it also serves as meta-commentary on the dangers that pursuing such relationships can pose. In other words, “Pearl†is “Peril†(at least according to the thinking of the time). Despite the implicit risk, this unconventional love story seems to work out in the end.
