Published by Brock Lupton (A0.942412). This is one of the lesser-known works of composer Robert Schumann. It was composed in 1849 and introduced in Leipzig on February 25, 1850. There are several possible reasons for the comparative unfamiliarity of this work which, despite its modest title, is a full-fledged 3-movement concerto for four very accomplished French horn players with orchestra. In its original configuration, the work exploits the newly-invented valved French horn. (The horn and trumpet were natural instruments – like today’s bugles, with no valves – until about 1835.) The concerto establishes a festive character at the outset, and becomes almost feverish as the excitement expands. The slow movement (Romanze) typifies another side of the composer, expansive and tender. It leads directly into the third (final) movement which brings together the various elements in an outburst of sheer joy.The title to which this note is attached is my re-orchestration of the accompaniment (score and all orchestral parts). Three different ensemble versions are also available from SMP. Any of these is compatible with the orchestral score and parts.

The secondo part uses mostly chords and arpeggios to simplify hand movement. The piece is mostly to teach rhythm and some improvisation, although it would also work well as a performance piece. The familiarity of the song is one of its biggest draws for students who might be a little more hesitant to tackle an unfamiliar song.

In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Associations Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Mens Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: “La Cucarachaâ€, “Cielito Lindoâ€, De Coloresâ€, and “Mexican Hat Danceâ€, all available here (soon).

Here is a spritely carol with a very specific set of musical parameters that belies its flowing sound. The right hand melody, so familiar to many of us, with its melismatic phrases, is set in fifths and fourths ONLY. the accompaniment, in the left hand bass, is octaves and fifths, filled in at the top of the bottom with a whole step. A very restricted set of materials, yet they complement the song in its simplicity and verve. This arrangement is NOT as suitable for vocal accompaniment as the others in the series. Melismas in 5ths, not easy to sing along with. But, fun to play! MBB.

Note: The original version of Duet in D-Flat Major made use of relatively uncommon time signatures (6/16; 9/16; 12/16). This 'Alternate Version' has rewritten the piece into more familiar time signatures (6/8; 9/8; 12/8). Duet in D-Flat Major was written in what could perhaps be best described as a burst of inspiration. After a couple of days of casually juggling some motifs around in my mind, clicked and I woke up with a musical idea that I scrambled to write down as quickly as possible. I spent the majority of that day developing these ideas, and this became what is now the third movement. Some of the ‘leftover ideas’ that didn’t make it into the finale were used as seeds for the second movement - in particular, the motifs at measure 9 and from 70-80. The opening movement ended up being the last one written and begins with a noble and/or heroic fanfare in 6/16. The second movement cautiously meanders through unexpected harmonies, much like someone nervously exploring unfamiliar places. The finale is another fanfare, but has some mischievous fun after turning a few harmonic corners in minor. My goal with this duet was to create a musical universe that has the grandeur of an orchestra with just two voices.  I’ve adapted this duet for a variety of instruments. Hymntunes I contains deconstructed versions of three familiar Christmas hymns. The movements were deconstructed in the same way that much post-modern architecture or visual art is deconstructed. A deconstructivist building will have most of the elements of a traditional building. Some elements will be exaggerated (a window might be many times too large or too small) and some elements will be displaced (a doorway might be several feet from the wall, the roof might appear to float above the building). These preludes use similar techniques. Most of the elements of the original hymntunes are present but some are exaggerated, repeated many times, or used differently from the original. These chorale preludes use several unfamiliar techniques: slides between notes, arm vibrato, a doppler portamento, harmonics, and tremolos.

If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them. These pieces will really test your quartet’s ability to play together.The score is in bass clef, but alternative treble clef parts are included.

It was begun in 2013 and completed in 2016; the total duration is 6:41. The texts by Solomon Ibn Gabriol, Samuel L. Clemens (aka Mark Twain), and one attributed to Fra Giovanni Giocondo but probably written by Earnest Temple Hargrove, take the listener on a journey from grief/death to hope/heaven. Themusical language is unapologetically chromatic. Other than perhaps the most academic of composers these days, chromaticism has largely fallen into disuse. Although the vast majority of my music written since around 1998 is either tonal or more often modal, I occasionally return to a chromatically saturated musical language to express certain emotions through sounds that are alien to thosemusical languages. I did so in the present title with the intent of painting the three texts more poignantly. While most passages feature familiar-sounding triads and octaves, the melodies, harmonies and cadences sound unfamiliar. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.1115501). You Were Once Darkness is written for advanced string trio being full of extended techniques, cross rhythms, and challenging harmonies. It is well suited for string trio recitals and chamber concerts. The music follows a redemptive arc, a journey from dark to light, from chaos to repose. It’s not meant to be auto-biographical but to be meaningful to anyone who has known the sweetness of overcoming personal brokenness, whether it might be addiction, self-destruction, religious deliverance, or other crisis. It approaches the topic from the perspective of overcoming self. The harmonies, rhythms, and timbres of the piece strive to portray this transition. The age-old metaphors of darkness for ill and light for good are featured characters in the music. In particular, the title refers to a line from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, “You were once darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.†“You Were Once Darkness†uses the melody from a very familiar Christmas carol but it is highly camouflaged and difficult to distinguish. Although it forms the backbone of the music it also, as our own backbones do, remains mostly unobserved. Clues do peak through the darkness, so to speak, from time to time so the attentive listener may discern the melody by the end. The music sounds edgy and unfamiliar even though it only uses the notes of the C-major scale (all the white keys on the piano). This is achieved using techniques developed by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt which employ rules-based writing, typically using a simple scale over a single major or minor accompanying chord. The concept sounds simple but that does not make it easy to write or to play. The technique produces an interplay of dissonance and consonance that creates a fascinating variation of sound much as a kaleidoscope does with color. Robert Myers S.D.G. wheatmyermusic.com.

The key changes made are transposition by an octave of pedal notes, similar to lute versions.The main difference between this violin transcription version and the arrangements from lute is that the bass notes are not present. However, there are also some minor differences in melody which may be unfamiliar to guitarists familiar with the lute arrangements.
