It has a lot of rhythmic and melodic diversity, and switches tempo and key signature frequently. It is an excellent way to really practise using the left hand, while playing a melody with the right. The range of the song goes from A1 (two octaves and a minor third below middle C) to C8 (four octaves above middle C). While you can octave adjust it, to play it truly, you will need more than just a regular keyboard.The percussion part, while it is technically written for bass drum, can be done with any non-pitched percussion instrument, including your hands or feet, if you can manage to pull it off. The percussion is optional, however, I think it is how the song should be played.

Background: To The Challenges We Face was originally created during the Go Compose Online! North America May 2020 pilot workshop. This workshop, aimed toward youth, took a select number of applicants from all around North America and provided them individual tutoring with well-established composers, theory professors, and musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated shutdown of society. The workshop was centered around the theme Encoded Composition, where the music written portrayed some sort of hidden meaning, either illustrated through the music or through the individual notes composed on staff paper. All the pieces created during the workshop were performed by professional musicians (including solo instrumentation for piano, viola, unpitched percussion, and pitched percussion). In all, there were applicants from around North America, including the United States, Canada, and El Salvador.

This is unfortunate because one of the best ways to boost pianistic enjoyment and musicianship is to collaborate with others. The earliest level of piano students are often excluded from ensemble playing because little to no music is written for them. This arrangement offers a very familiar and easy folk tune in parts of varying difficulties for four pianists and two unpitched percussion instruments, appropriate for students of one day to one year. Additionally, variations in part-presentation have been given, depending on the teacher's style and the abilities of the students. Midnight Manor is a composition for percussion ensemble utilizing 6 performers. The work was written as a side project in segments over the course of the composer's undergraduate degree, beginning as a fragment of a melody and eventually arriving at the final product it is today. The instrumentation of the piece makes use of two 4.3 octave marimbas, a vibraphone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, and various unpitched percussion instruments. An attempt at writing for mostly keyboard instruments in the percussion ensemble setting, this melody-based composition recreates the atmosphere of feeling left alone in a seemingly haunted mansion with nowhere to run. A recording of the piece was included on Mancini's 1961 album 'Mr. Lucky Goes Latin'. The title comes from the lujon percussion instrument invented by William Loughborough and which is played on the album recording. The lujon derived its name from 'John Lewis' - the American jazz pianist who bought the first instrument from Loughborough.

The first half of the piece uses syncopated, disjointed activity to reflect the carefree busyness of everyday life, and the second half uses dramatic harmonic shifts to express the feeling that when you lay down to rest, you are truly alone.The PDF contains the score as well as all six parts: violin, alto saxophone, bass clarinet, cello, piano, and mixed percussion. The original percussion part includes a brake drum, 5 tin cans, 5 wood blocks, a large guiro, a small antique cymbal, a sizzle cymbal, and a marimba (at least 4.3 octaves). Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic.The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo.The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section.This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section.The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments,emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl.
