Appalachia Waltz is a piece composed by Mark O?Connor for unaccompanied violin which gained fame as the title track from the album featuring O?Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release remained for many months in the top ten of Billboard Magazine?s Classical music chart. O?Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993 before he brought it to the trio when compiling material for their album. Here, adapted to viola, ?Appalachia Waltz? is very similar to the violin version O?Connor performs in his solo concerts. With the musical influences coming from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, it is one of O?Connor?s most beautiful pieces. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

It is ideal for advanced players who would like to add a piece that is very unique to their repetoire or program. A foreword from the composer:“First and foremost, this work is dedicated to Kristen Scott. It stands as a reminder of a lifelong friendship, and how strong that friendship is. Thank you for supporting me and being so wonderful.This work I began writing in May of this year, and initially it was just an improvisation for one viola. I had then realised after trying to write for Solo Viola how difficult it was, since it is such a unique instrument. I wanted to make the most of the technical and musical capabilities of the instrument, so I added another Viola. With that addition, each motif seemed to make more sense and the music just flowed. Centre is based on the concept of centring oneself, but also the beauty in being surrounded by motion; by seeing things happening around you and being able to observe. Just being allowed to exist, in a way.I’ve always been inspired by Australian composers, especially since I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by their music at different points in my life. My teacher Patricia Pollett, has been actively involved in advocating for Australian composition for the viola, including commissions, recording and performances. The Week, a set of viola duets for teachers to play with their students, so teacher and student can really enjoy making music together. We are so used to the viola playing a solo line, accompanied by a piano, that we forget the beauty of two violas playing as a duet. The two equal parts create so many possibilities in close harmonies and interweaving melodies. I have explored these sounds in The Week. There are five pieces, each with a different mood. The sounds of the instrument are explored further with different bowing techniques creating different feel. I hope students will enjoy this sound world, making the most of the interplay between the two violas.

It is in three movements and explores the sound of the four homogeneous instruments. The first movement is a lively and bouncy, with a rollicking tune and unstoppable momentum. The second has a calm texture, with a solo of harmonics sitting on top of shimmering chords. The final movement ricochets from classical structure to classical structure, starting as a fugue and building energy through inventions, chorales and solos before culminating in a joyful burst of excitement.
