The Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, or Twelve Grand Concertos, HWV 319–330, are 12 concerti grossi by George Frideric Handel for aconcertino trio of two violins and violoncello and a ripieno four-part string orchestra with harpsichord continuo. First published by subscription in London by John Walsh in 1739, in the second edition of 1741 they became Handel's Opus 6. Taking the olderconcerto da chiesa and concerto da camera of Arcangelo Corelli as models, rather than the later three-movement Venetian concerto of Antonio Vivaldi favoured by Johann Sebastian Bach, they were written to be played during performances of Handel's oratorios and odes. Despite the conventional model, Handel incorporated in the movements the full range of his compositional styles, including trio sonatas, operatic arias, French overtures, Italian sinfonias, airs, fugues, themes and variations and a variety of dances. Key: E minor.Whereas the organ works by Widor have secured a solid position in the repertoire, his no less elaborate and artistic piano works are known to only a small circle of pianists, probably because the piano works by Debussy and Ravel outdid him in this field. 'Variations de Concert sur un thème original' carried by profound melancholy were published in 1867 for the first time and have remained his non-verifiable opus 1 to this day. They show that the young composer takes the tonal language of J. S. Bach as a starting point, yet gives his cycle of variations, which is reminiscent of the 'Goldberg Variations', its own romantic expression. In 1876 he revised the variations and published them under the slightly modified title of 'Variations sur un Thème original pour piano' Op. 29. Our carefully edited new edition contains both versions (Op. 1 and Op. 29) about which one may say without exaggeration that they should be in the possession of every concert pianist.

Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928135). Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is one of Brahms' most popular works, expertly arranged here for Brass Quintet by American composer P. F. Strohm. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced. This work of about 8 minutes in length was composed and published in 1891 for Concert Organ at the time it was the de facto national anthem of the U.S.A.The work is based upon and inspired by America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee) an American patriotic song that uses the same melody as the national anthem of the United Kingdom God Save the Queen. Variations on America has 5 variations including a number of humorous sections with some definite tongue-in-cheek happening. Ives, who performed it first on a concert grand Organ for a Fourth of July celebration in 1892 was quoted as saying that it was, almost as fun as playing baseball.Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets (Trumpet 1 in E-flat and C, Trumpet 2 in B-flat), Horn in F, Trombone and Tuba).

BassI have been thinking about the plan to make an orchestral transcription of Goldberg Variations for a long time, as one of the examples of collective music-making, where most of the work would be typical of the style of a piano concerto, and would also include chamber ensembles both with a pianist and solo. Total duration (with some repetitions) - 50 min. Some variations are played: Piano + Orchestra (1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11,12,14,16,18,20,21,24,25,26,27.28,29) Orchestra only (19, 30), Brass only (4), Wood winds only (9), Brass + Wood winds only (22), Piano + Soloists from the Orchestra (7, 15, 17) Piano only (13) Prelude-Aria (Theme) begins with the pianist and after 8 measures the orchestra gradually turns on. The same Postlude-Aria theme at the end of the composition has an inversion orchestration, when everyone starts playing together (Piano + Orchestra) and then the orchestra gradually stops playing and only one pianist remains.Audio (mp3) incudes excerpts of Variations ## 1,2,4,5,6,7,11,14,19,20,21,22,28,29,30.

Published by WINDCREST (A0.945050). THEME, FUGUETTE and VARIATIONS on Lightly Row. Rarely has a song for children been so widely utilized and for such a long period of time. Written in the early 20th century, its wide-spread and successful use as a song for children can possibly be attributed to the construction of the melody itself. The melody starts with two descending intervals, each a minor third. These same qualities also made Lightly Row an excellent choice as a song for use with beginning instrumentalists. One might find it difficult NOT to find this song included in most published beginning-level instrument method books since the mid-20th century. This arrangement for brass quintet permits the performers to greatly expand upon the intervals and scale passage of the original song while exploring one of the more common composition forms, theme and variation with an excursion to a shortened version of another musical form, the fugue. An attempt has been made to provide interesting and challenging material for all members of the quintet. This selection could be performed at any point in a recital. It could be one of several featured selections performed in a concert with a programmatic theme of early 20th Century folk songs; or a portion of a concert where a theme and variation selection is desired. It might also serve as an encore to any recital or concert!

Concerto for Kientzy was written for the french saxophone virtuoso, Daniel Kientzy. The solo part for bass saxophone highlights the tonal variations of this instrument in it's various registers. The slow first movement is followed by a rapid and invigorating second movement. This is the first part of a trilogy of works based on this concerto. The other works are Silent Durations XXII (with the composer's usual application of silence as an architectural device) and Silent Concerto Durations which brings together the previous two compositions as one work. It would be conceivable to play Concerto for Kientzy on other Bb saxophones. The soundclip is of the second movement.
