King, Henry Fillmore and Edwin Franko Goldman. John Phillip Sousa perfected this musical form which typically consists of: a short introduction, first strain melody, second strain melody, trio (modulating to the subdominant key), break strain (dogfight) and finally a reprise of the trio melody in grandioso style. Victory March is reminiscent of this style of traditional American march music, however, a short percussion soli has been used in place of the second strain. March style articulations have been included in parts to assist young students with proper performance interpretation.

Be sure to check out my first euphonium quartet Beacons (2014).No Longer at Ease is a stand-alone euphonium quartet inspired by Chinua Achebe’s 1960 novel of the same name. In Achebe’s novel a young man is sent to University by his village’s elders in the hopes he will return able to guide and protect his people through uncertain and unwanted colonialist developments. However, the man abandons their plans to pursue his own interests and faces the fallout of his actions upon his return home and in the volatile years to come. Reading such an affective work in the final semester of my Masters preparing to return home was timely and I have found the similarities between my life and Achebe’s art blurred. I began writing this work upon returning home to Niceville, Florida and realizing that both myself and the town I call home have changed drastically.     The piece begins with jarring sixteenth-notes derived from a rising arpeggiated-tetrachord. Ceaseless double tonguing, the lead in the fourth euphonium, and unsettling metric shifts combine for unique and frenetic effects. A yearning melody enters amidst this chaos and is a musical spelling of “homeâ€. The return and developments of the frenetic material culminates in a solo statement of this theme. The middle section represents the home of years past and features a uniquely Niceville quote with fragments of the Niceville High School fight song. These fragments make up each independent line and the music culminates in a triumphant victory. However, this victory is cut brief by the cutting sixteenth-note driven material from earlier. The finale is an exciting mockery of the “home†theme with interjections and exploitations of all previous themes. - Matthew NunesNiceville, June 2018.

This song is based around the phrase Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war a phrase going back to the time of William Shakespeare's play. Julius Caesar. In the scene, Mark Antony is alone with Julius Caesar's body, shortly after Caesar's assassination. In a soliloquy, he reveals his intention to incite the crowd at Caesar's funeral to rise up against the assassins. Foreseeing violence throughout Italy, Antony even imagines Caesar's spirit joining in the exhortations: ranging for revenge, with Ate by his side come hot from hell, shall in these confines with a Monarch's voice cry Havok! and let slip the dogs of war. The ballet premiered at Opéra de Paris as part of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company and was an immediate successful, bringing Stravinsky international fame. The ballet tells the story of the journey of Prince Ivan. He strays into the realm of the evil Koschei, whose immortality is preserved by keeping his soul in a magic egg. Ivan is about to kill the Firebird but is spared. As a token of thanks, she offers him a feather that can be used to summon her should Ivan be in dire need. Prince Ivan then meets princesses who are under Koschei’s spell, falling in love with one of them. After confronting the magician, Koschei sends his minions after Ivan, who summons the Firebird. She intervenes and bewitches the monsters. Exhausted, the creatures and Koschei then fall into a deep sleep. Ivan is then directed by the Firebird to the egg containing Koschei's soul, which Ivan destroys, freeing all those under his spell. Ivan and the princesses celebrate their victory. The music features in Disney’s Fantasia 2000. This arrangement of The Princesses’ Round Dance is for piano trio (violin, violoncello and piano). The Battle of the Alamo was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican Troops under commodore and President Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna, launched an assault on the Alamo Mission. On this day, All of the Texican troops had fallen. Before seeking revenge Santa Anna had accomplished a long felt desire to take over what was righteously his. This battle ended in a Mexican victory, making it an essential part of United States History. Containing Latin flourishes, this piece celebrates the lives lost, while vividly imagining a hot dry battlefield in Texas. Composer Jay Coles best puts this to a musical setting. This song is based around the phrase Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war a phrase going back to the time of William Shakespeare's play. Julius Caesar. In the scene, Mark Antony is alone with Julius Caesar's body, shortly after Caesar's assassination. In a soliloquy, he reveals his intention to incite the crowd at Caesar's funeral to rise up against the assassins. Foreseeing violence throughout Italy, Antony even imagines Caesar's spirit joining in the exhortations: ranging for revenge, with Ate by his side come hot from hell, shall in these confines with a Monarch's voice cry Havok! and let slip the dogs of war.
