The title Vignette here is used in the literary sense of the word, although there's no solid concept of any kind aside from that implied by the title of each piece. They are simply a vague descriptive of a moment or mood. There is no obligation to perform these as a suite, although for concert programming I thought that something faster and less pastoral would be in order, hence the scherzo for No. 3.The mp3 file is a Sibelius playback with generic sounds so this should not be used as a guide to the organ registrations. These are specific enough in the score and should be adhered to as much as practical.The Trois Vignettes would suit moderate to advanced players.Flute part available on request

Nos. 1, 2 & 3 were composed at the same time as the flute and organ set, (one initial idea was for the solo instrument to be playable on either flute or oboe since En dehors la brise apaisante had been performed twice with organ and flute). No. 4 was an adaptation of an unfinished trio for piano, flute, and violin, and No. 5 was a completion of an oboe/organ piece that I started writing in 2019 when I left Europe. There is no obligation to perform these as a suite, although there was some deliberation in ordering each vignette as presented in the score to provide a flow of dynamic and character.

Published by Nikolai Clavier (A0.942498). I was asked to write this piece for a Norwegian saxophonist studying in Copenhagen. He was looking for new music from each of the Scandinavian countries, and I decided to make my contribution a homage to the beautiful nature that Norway has to offer. Thus I drew inspiration from traditional folk music, as well as the majestic images of mountains, fjords and valleys across the Norwegian landscape. This piece has five movements and each has an illustrating title, creating a narrative sequence of movements. A vignette is a brief evocative description, account or episode. This produced a challenge in the sense that I had to be musically brief and technically concrete withing the span of a short movement. This in addition to the challenge of creating appropriate soundscapes and colors. The five movements are:I. Views over the FjordII. Winter sceneryIII. Nora at the farmIV. The Midnight Sun over the Finnmark HighlandsV. Autumn rain at the southern coastAn other interesting fact to note is the fact that the last four movements has rather specific seasons attached to themselves. Second movement is a winter movement with the original title Snow covered mountains and icy waters, and then follows a spring movement, a clear summer movement and autumn at last.

These are short inventive character pieces that, in some places, also have a more sincere emotional depth. Each one captures a mood, or the essence of a situation. Conflicting Interest is based on a situation in which one person’s attention is divided between two different interests. Musically, this conflict is created by having the flute and oboe play in what seems to be different tempos and meters. The second vignette, Drifting Away, was written for a promising former student who unexpectedly died during her first semester of graduate school. A series of pitches that leads to the note A at the end of this movement, which can be thought of as the goal of her final quiet journey. The title Breaking Free describes the feeling people get when they work through a problem or have a realization that seems to set them mentally or emotionally free. Certain rhythm and pitch structures control this movement until it finally breaks free with a moment of rhythmic chaos near the end. Because of the rhythmic/melodic interplay between parts, this piece requires intimate ensemble work.

We were in a room at Rice University where he teaches after a Texas Brass Quintet rehearsal. This was back when both Dave and I were in the band. I asked him and the hornist if they would stay after the rehearsal to read through my new trio. It was these Four Vignettes.When I finished, I KNEW it was mission accomplished because Dave’s face lit up. He had a smile of satisfaction not unlike a smile someone would have after a very satisfying meal.My compositions have been different since then. More like this Four Vignettes piece and less like the experimental stuff I was writing in the 90’s.

Wonderful newly written chamber music (2021) by a female composer, Vignettes is a delightful work for Bassoon and String Quartet. Refreshing and evocative, Vignettes creates three distinct moods as it explores solo bassoon in relationship to the texture and color of the strings. The first movement, “Hopespun†is joyous and accessible, celebrating a dotted note pattern both dancelike and carefree. The second movement, “Somewhere, Tears†is lyrical and reflective, characterized by a poignant descending melody that moves throughout the ensemble.  “Infinite Imagines,†the third movement, is playful and imaginative, with a curious pizzicato theme that weaves its way through a series of short whole-tone scale patterns that are interrupted by comedic melodic bursts from the bassoon. Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. Many of the selections are built on quickly learnable patterns. Dr. Weber is a member of ASCAP and has his own YouTube channel, at which you can hear many of his compositions and excerpts from some of his performances in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He currently serves as Professor of Music and Chair of the Arts and Humanities Division at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

Commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Adophe Sax’s birth, each of the movements of this piece (beyond the expository prelude) presents miniature vignettes of music written in Belgium’s past as seen through the lens of Sax’s invention. It is, in that sense, an homage to not only the great musical minds that came before Sax, but also to his own keen inventive mind and incomparable contributions to music history. The Postlude involves a curious intersection of Sax with another brilliant musical mind: Richard Wagner. Sax was the stage director for a performance of Wagner's Tannhauser, and he put some saxophones offstage with French horns because he couldn't find enough horn players in Paris. Wagner was so angry he rescored the Shepherd's Tune from Act 3 of Tristan und Isolde from saxophone to English horn.
