Flausino Vale (Barbacena, 1894; Belo Horizonte, 1954), known as the "Brazilian Paganini" by Villa-Lobos, wrote a set of characteristic and concertante preludes for solo violin. These short pieces show the Brazilian musical landscape and explore important violin techniques rarely shown on a basic level. This book presents a bigger set of scores including missing pieces in previous catalogues and alternate versions for 3 preludes, which the composer intended to publish. There is a suggestion for studying the preludes in a progressive order. This edition aims to print original bowings, fingerings and instructions which retain precious teachings of this remarkable teacher. Editor?s suggestions and explanations are written in Portuguese and English. As a homage to Flausino Vale, there are two Flausinian preludes composed by Dr Zoltan Paulinyi for violin, along with their transcriptions for viola.

10 Latin Duets is an exciting collection of original compositions by David McKeown, arranged as duets for one Violin and one Viola.

Each piece explores a different style and flavour of Latin music, from the Rumbas, Salsas and Mambos of Cuba, to the Sambas and Bossas of Brazil, and on to the Calypsos and Merengues of the Caribbean. Mexico is represented by the Huapango, Venezuela and Colombia by the Joropo, and Argentina and Uruguay by the Tango.

Most of these duets are ideal for players of an Intermediate standard, with two or three more suitable for Advanced Intermediate. The New Antiquity collection includes 15 compositions for a violin and viola duo. Ten compositions from the collection, composed by anonymous authors from the Middle Ages and two Renaissance authors, Tielman Susato and Thoinot Arbeau, have been arranged by Sonja Kalajic. The other five pieces are original romantic compositions by Sonja Kalajic inspired by the spirit of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Beautiful hits of early music, or so-called music of antiquity, have been adapted to the modern and standard violin and viola duo in keeping with the newer instrumental and concertante possibilities of the said instruments. There is no evidence that anyone has adapted that kind of music for such a musical ensemble before, so this edition of musical scores represents a noteworthy contribution to the greater affirmation of early music, to the literature of the string duet in question, and to music in general. From the technical point of view, the collection consists of compositions for almost all levels of performance ? from easier pieces by anonymous authors to some virtuoso ones, like ?Heraldry? by Sonja Kalajic. We hope that the compositions from the New Antiquity collection will enrich and refresh certain concert programs, that they will encourage some performers to attempt new interpretations of old melodies and dances, and that the musicians and the audiences will jointly feel and enjoy the indestructible and astonishing relevance of those musical compositions.

Shlof Mein Kind is a Yiddish lullaby, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola.

There are two melodies in use for Shlof Mein Kind. The melody in this arrangement is the lesser known one, as sung by Paul Robeson. There is no record of the tune?s composer, but the words are a setting of a poem by the Jewish Ukrainian writer, Sholem Aleichem. Aleichem is best known as the creator of the ?Tevye? short stories, which later inspired the musical ?Fiddler on the Roof?.

Shlof Mein Kind is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The simple melody is played three times with varying accompaniment. Shlof Mein Kind is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above.
