With regard to myself, listening also involves paying attention to the tone of voice and body language of the speaker, and not only the words. If I choose not to listen, I would be compromising my ability to empathize, which would cause me to forfeit my voice and also make the world a poorer place. The piece begins with sounds - a-ah, n-ng, s -, fragments that are also building blocks for words, units used and reused in various combinations to convey meaning. The title alludes to the classic Joni Mitchell song, however, this is a piece of classical music. The poem refers to the burning of Notre Dame, then the inevitable physical decline inherent in aging, then the unexpected crumbling of our democratic institutions. The original melodic material echoes the fragments taken from the two masters of the Notre Dame school of organum, however, the dissonant, challenging piano accompaniment deconstructs them. The middle section is wistful and less dissonant, followed by a return to the earlier musical material. The piece ends with the quote from Perotin with which it begins, the vowel O, however, at the end it is a moan of regret. Words and music by Maria Thompson Corley, incorporating Leonin's Haec Dies and Perotin's Beata Viscera.

Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1141386). I composed my Invention No. 3 in C minor for two voices during the Spring of 2012. The motive is intriguing as the first twelve notes are immediately followed by their inversion after a drop of a seventh to form a contrapuntal palindrome. This inversion is followed by an octave leap upwards to D that circles back to the starting note C. In bar 3, the lower voice introduces the motive a fourth lower at the dominant as the upper voice states the countermotive which concludes in bar 4 with an augmented tonal version of the descending scale run from the original motive. The ensuing episode in bars 5-8 is constructed from fragments of the motive in the upper voice accompanied by an embellished form of the countermotive in the lower voice. A series of ascending broken thirds accompanied by a rising scale run cadences in the tonic key of C minor in bar 10 before abruptly redirecting to G minor in bar 11. At this juncture, the motive and countermotive are restated in their inversions. The episodic sequence from bars 5-9 is also stated in an inverted form in bars 13-17. In bar 18, the motive is stated by the upper voice in G minor with the countermotive now in the lower voice. This formula is repeated a whole step lower in F minor in bars 20-21 followed by the modulation sequence from bars 5-8 reprised with the voices exchanging places. In bar 27, a cadence in F minor redirects back to C major in bar 28 followed by a modulation sequence culminating in C minor in bar 30 that cadences to a final Picardy Third in bar 32.

This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 70 songs excerpted from the chapter The Lasses in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs expressing the poet's passion for his wife Jean, and for that other species. Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs, using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems, and wrote original lyrics for traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources, letters, and manuscripts to determine the origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills. This volume is illustrated with reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints. These volumes also contain a glossary of frequently appearing Scots words and insightful historical notes for each song.

I heard her sing at her senior recital at the New England Conservatory of Music this spring and I immediately thought I should write a song cycle for her. I love the poetry of H.D. (aka Hilda Doolittle). My first attempt at setting her poems to music was in 2015. The poems in that song cycle focused on several figures from Greek mythology: Adonis, Circe, Lethe, Daphne, Evadne, etc.The words in this cycle are Ms. Doolittle's poetic musings on fragments left behind by the ancient Greek poet Sappho.1. Periwinkle is a song cycle that was originally composed for mezzo-soprano and piano, but has been arranged for soprano and piano; it is a collection of character pieces using original poetry by Alicia Willard. High High Shoes is an upbeat, rhythmically active piece that illustrates the exhilaration and anxiety in reaching for one’s desires. Wings is a hauntingly slow array of uneasy dissonances, using only one line of text that is chopped into fragments and slowly arranged into a comprehensible statement. Boulders on Our Shoulders has a lilting jazz feel, including several piano solos that incorporate many aspects of the blues. Follow the Borrowers is much more introspective, with the music vividly conveying what the text colorfully provides in such lines as I’ll caress the tongue shapes. The title of the cycle is taken from a line of poetry in which the periwinkle dirt in the sky is introduced, providing one of many colors that are portrayed in the pieces. Periwinkle was written in 2009 and premiered at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts by Stephanie McAllister, mezzo-soprano, and the composer at the piano. After its recomposition, the soprano edition was premiered in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2016 by Amy Ingram, soprano, with the composer at the piano.

BACKSTORY ON “The Dog Had…†Variations The origin of “The Dog Had…†Variations†stems from a frantic voicemail received from the composer’s mother-in-law many years ago while on a visit exclaiming that our dog at the time, Pepper, a chocolate-brown and white springer spaniel, “HAD†an accident of explosive proportions on their basement rug and that we needed to “GET HOME†and deal with it immediately. At first the family was taken aback by the phone message, but ultimately it became a source of hilarity and shortly afterward, the composer’s wife created a rhyme from the message and a tune immediately sprung from that. This tune simply became something our family sung together periodically over many year’s time for amusement until now when the composer came up with the idea to set it to variations for string quartet. In this work, the tune is first heard in simple fashion in its entirety in the viola. Fragments of the tune follow in various guises. For example, the rhythm of the words “GET HOME†as well as “I’VE HAD IT†are prominent thematic ideas used in the piece. In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage. Therefore it can be used instrumentally or if required, there is a number in the score of which, although the guitar has a melody and one of the choral voices, with two guitars, or make two choral voices or join with your own melody, use both bowed string instruments and plucked strings, etc.Likewise, there are two voices, of which a single voice can use the phrasings of both one voice and the other, giving it its own personality.The tempo will be whatever the interpretation itself wants, much slower, without accelerating so much between the beginning and the moment of the song itself. I have incorporated some instruments into the arrangement as examples:Buzukibouzouki, like the sazturco and the Lebanese Buzuq, which belong to the same family of Buzuki instruments.And as percussion only percussion The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument from Turkey. The Turkish Darbuka have a high range of low and high resonant tones that sound between the two registers; serious (Dum) and acute (Tek). The edge or lip allows for finger breaking techniques that are not possible in the Egyptian Darbuka.And the Tombak, also called Dombak Ozarb, is a chalice-shaped drum, traditionally built with a hollowed-out biker or walnut trunk covered with skin at one end.With the beginning and among the work itself I wanted to give place to the Bashraf (Turkish Pesrev and Persian Pishraw, which means Overture) and the Sama'i (Turkish Sam Semai) Instrumental genre that is used in the Turkish court and in Sufi music . They were introduced into the Arab world before the 19th century.And also give place in his forms to the Ottoman composer Ismail Hakkibei (1866-1927).
