The fourth piece David Fraser wrote, â??L'océan' {The Ocean}, dedicated to Claude Debussy, uses whole-tone scales throughout as lyrical motifs. The composition unfolds with the allusion of the sun glimmering on ocean waves, followed by the playfulness of eddies and gusts of wind. These themes merge into one another as the wind increases in ferocity, culminating in the start of a storm with sudden strikes of lightning preceded by the reverberation of thunder. The pitter-patter of rain on the water steadily evolves into a full tempest that engulfs the middle section of the piece. As the storm subsides and the ocean calms, night has fallen and the twinkling of stars in the firmament are reflecting upon the water. The piece ends with the return of the opening theme as the sun swiftly rises above the ocean on the horizon.This is the full version of â??L'océan' which is the fourth piece from 'Hommages: Suite pour le Piano'. 40 pages. On the Lake written for advanced SSAA divisi and harp. Fannie Isabelle Sherrick was an American poet who wrote songs and poems throughout the 1860's that captured hearts and minds. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years. ON THE LAKE There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away. The beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The trees bend down in the sun's warm glow Till their branches meet in the waves below, And the clouds in the far-off skies Are mirrored anew where the sunlight lies. Many Michiganders have enjoyed a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan. Â A few years ago, Jill and I rented a condo for a week in Petoskey. Â The condo was right next to the state park. Â Every night we would walk to the beach in the state park and watch the sunset over Lake Michigan. Â This music reflects that sunset ritual. Â The opening begins with the waves gently crashing on the beach churning up the sand. Â The first theme begins as the sun sits low in the sky creating a great sparkle across the water. Â An interlude descends down the piano as the sun dips lower in the sky. Â The main theme is heard again an octave lower as the sun sits even lower in the sky. Â The music begins to build excitement as the sun begins its final descent to the water. Â When the bottom of the sun connects with the water, the crowd begins to cheer. Â With every crash of waves, the sun sinks into the water of Lake Michigan. Â The sun disappears and we once again hear the main theme another octave lower as daylight disappears. Â The dark sets in and we can only hear the gentle crashing of the waves on the beach.

This guitar and vocal work were originally set on the Robert Frost poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’, and was written for a lecture series at Boston University given by Lukas Foss entitled ‘Words on Music. Some years later I set out to publish the work and found that the estate of the late R. Frost frowned upon this particular practice and after a second failed attempt to get permission to publish the work, I decided to write my own verse for this composition (my first actually) and use a subject familiar to me, the story of Daedalus and Icarus Journey to freedom.After his arrival in Crete, Daedalus found that Minos would not let him leave. He subsequently obtained wax and feathers and fashioned wings for himself and his son Icarus. With these they succeeded in flying away, but Icarus, flying too near to the sun, melted his wings, fell into the sea near Crete, and drowned; Daedalus escaped to Italy only to fall into the hands of the local King Kokalos who drowned him in hot water. As I read Hood's story of constant love, I feel the inevitable promise found there, but also a sense of timeless adventure. At the beginning of this setting, the piano represents the rolling waves of the sea—relentless and full of energy—and the unyielding march of time. The fourth verse becomes contemplative following the setting of the sun and grows into the brighter day before a layering of the opening melody that moves into the distance.

The Island is the sister vignette another piano piece I wrote, Fives, now focusing on color as a design principle instead of rhythm. Since sound is heard from 20 to 20k Hz and light is perceived from about 375 to 750 THz, there is a huge speed difference between the two kinds of waves, but overall, waves are waves. My synesthetic view of reality allows me to see pictures and colors when I hear tones. To me, C is White, Db is Orange, D is Yellow, Eb is Seafoam, E is Green, F is Brown, Gb is Red, G is Grey, Ab is Violet, A is Pink, Bb is Gold, and B is Blue. There is some logical flow to my chromatic rainbow, but admittedly it’s a little interpretive. It’s just what I see! Associating colors with notes is a personalized thing; two of my friends both have perfect pitch yet each perceive unique chromatic schemes in their minds for tones, which also differ from mine. This project shows how I use my mental color wheel to musically paint a stormy island sunset.

It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. Arranged for standard string quartet (NOTE: the audio and video samples are performed by a cellist covering all violin, viola, and cello parts, but the voicing/octaves are identical to the string quartet arrangement). This choral work was originally written by John David for the band Airwaves in 1978. It was later arranged by Peter Knight and recorded by the King's Singers. This transcription for strings follows the very popular King's Singers version. The song is about 2 1/2 minutes long, and easy to read for all string parts. Doublestops could be skipped for beginning players. Bowings are included to facilitate uniform ensemble playing. It is a secular song but is often used by church choirs. It is a lovely ensemble piece when played by string quartet, and can be used for weddings, memorial services, or any occasion requiring hopeful or somber music. According to the composer: The inspiration for New Day was quite simple; I had just had a major blow in my personal life, and was sitting alone late at night on the settee feeling very low, and watching an ominous story on the news about the very real possibility of nuclear war. I started singing to the (hopefully) soon-to arrive New Day like it was an entity, that would rescue me from the depths. If the sun came up and the birds started singing as usual then I could believe that it really was the new day in which life would go on, and in which hope would survive.

A composition to resolve the story and dramatic tension. War is over, POW's have been rescued, peace has returned. The music offers an optimistic message. A new start for Mirla and Arthur; a new beginning for post-war Australia; and better relationships with Japan and the wider Pacific region in the hope of forming a lasting stability. The closing movement (a shift to Major G key) begins with two woozy piano refrains, which unify. Ambient textures include birdsong recorded at the graves of my grandparents and mother. There’s a slow unfurling of the majestic string arrangements that play above a gently rolling electronic rhythm. After the swelling strings and a burning crescendo the track ends with a poignant recording of Mirla in her old age, remembering the first moment she saw Arthur on his return from war. A solo violin plays-out a final farewell, a salute to multitudes affected by the violent acts of war. The violin fades and we are left with the timeless rhythm of ocean waves and eternal birdsong.
