Published by Thinkling Music (A0.1210402). “If music be the food of love, play on …â€Â TWELFTH NIGHT MUSIC is a concert suite drawn from my incidental music for Shakespeare’s play.  This arrangement for wind quintet was an easy transition from my original instrumentation of flute, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, and trombone; the trumpet part went easily into the oboe, and the trombone was written in about the same range as French horn.  Translating to this more established standard ensemble makes the piece much more accessible to a wider range of musicians worldwide than the fairly unusual instrumentation employed for the original theatrical production. First performance in Temecula, California, April 24th, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet. Duration approx. 7 mins.info@ronlevymusic.com.

Published by Thinkling Music (A0.1145980).      AEROS is a one-movement piece about flying.      The composition begins with Latin dance rhythms and a clearly defined melodic motif. The threads gradually build to a tumble of ecstatic exuberance, engaging but short-lived. The remainder of the piece is a return to the mundane, ultimately settling on a plateau of stability which the listener senses to be merely a steppingstone, a pause before resuming the journey into an uncertain future …      Structurally, the work is a single movement built around an Afro-Cuban montuno pattern, with ostinati divided among the instruments. Stylistically it could be considered as “moody minimalist with a melodyâ€. Or if that is too long and unwieldy, then perhaps just “MMMMUSIC!â€Â      First performance in Laguna Beach, California on September 21st, 2021, by West Coast Wind Quintet, as part of the Sunset Serenades series. The outdoor venue, a small amphitheater in beautiful Heisler Park, high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was the perfect aerie from which to bring this piece into the world.

Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. That one “wrong†note (you’ll hear it) signals “this is not your grandmother’s Beethovenâ€. The piece also makes creative use of Beethoven’s repeating figuration patterns, converting them with a few expertly placed note changes into quite bluesy sounding figures.

But this is no random title. “Hero†refers of course to the subtitle of Beethoven’s third symphony, the “Eroicaâ€. Just as in Sixth Sense, my piece begins a lot like the original, but soon goes astray - into a blues style which  Beethoven never knew. There IS drama here, along with the witty stuff.  After all, it is “Odd BEETHOVENâ€. And “Beethoven†is synonymous with “dramaâ€â€¦ as well as with “witâ€! The overall mood is whimsical and fun – and the piece is brief, making it a perfect encore piece – short and sweet.
