STRING QUARTET/STRING ENSEMBLEDerek Hasted writes I first arranged this lovely tune for The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and my arrangement here produces the same big sound from an intermediate string quartet, but using the sustain and wider pitch range to make the piece really sing. School teachers will find this is an ideal piece for an end of semester concert, and adult quartets will find it makes a restful and easy-to-play interlude piece in a full-length concert. Being so well-known, this will be an audience pleaser!Most of the instruments stay in the low positions throughout the piece.I like to think that the viola player gets a rather fun-to-play line here, and the 'cello part begins with a homage to Bach's Air on the G String, but the audience will probably never know...My arrangement comprises two verses and a Coda, but either verse could be repeated to make an even longer performance piece.There are suggested dynamics which make the piece come alive.(I have also published a version for guitar quartet)I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

These hymns can be performed as solos, as rhythmic chord accompaniment for singing, or as duets. Four separate scores are provided for each song to allow maximum flexibility. These scores can be used in numerous ways from solo playing to playing with a partner or as a group. Each song also has an accompanying note and chord reference chart as well as a rhythm pattern chart. Descriptions of each score and chart are detailed on the introduction page and summarized below: Melody Score This score can be played as a solo with or without singing along. Those new to reading standard music notation as well as those already familiar with music notation will find the numbers above the staff helpful. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the Tongue Drum. Lyrics are provided below the staff for sing along enjoyment Harmony Score This score can be used in conjunction with the Melody Score to form a duet by providing the accompaniment while someone plays or sings the melody. Chord names are shown above the staff for playing a rhythmic accompaniment in place of the harmony accompaniment shown. The chord names can also be used for ensemble playing with other instruments. Grand Staff The Grand Staff score combines the Melody Score with the Harmony Score. This score provides a visual overview of how the two scores line up and is helpful for a director using this set of scores in a group setting. If playing with a partner, this score may be easier to use since both players can see what the other person is playing. This score includes Tongue Drum note numbers above the melody staff and below the harmony staff; chord names above the harmony staff for using a rhythmic chord accompaniment; and lyrics between the staves for sing along enjoyment. Advanced Solo Score This score includes both harmony and melody notes to create a fuller sounding solo. Numbers corresponding to the numbers on the Tongue Drum are included above the staff. Note and Chord Chart This chart consists of two separate staff rows. The first staff shows the notes used for the melody and harmony. The second staff shows the notes in each chord used in this song. Any combination of the notes within a given chord can be played using one of the rhythm patterns. Rhythm Chart This chart shows four rhythm patterns that can be used as an accompaniment for the melody. Using the Harmony Score or the Grand Staff, follow the chord names to play notes from the given chord using one of the rhythm patterns. I entered into a composition competition in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2014. It was a part of something called the F​ estival of Love​ p​resented by Southbank in London, a festival celebrating the enactment of the Same Sex Couple Act in the United Kingdom. This issue is close to my heart as my partner is from the UK and we are as gay as a row of rainbow striped teepees.During the festival, members of the public passing through Southbank Centre were asked to write down a couple of sentences about something they love. Those texts were then posted on the internet and composers were invited over a period of just 24 hours, to set them to music for a cappella female vocal trio ​Ju​ice​. ​​​I was absolutely thrilled that one of my compositions, G​​oing Somewhere​​, was selected for performance.Although I will likely never meet the authors of these texts Ella from Brixton, nor Susie from Hammersmith, (I mean, they didn’t even leave their surnames!) I like to think I have a creative connection to them. Just like Ella, i really enjoy being on my little island-of-me as I walk through the city or sit on a train, the stimulus of the flow of energy and people around me is something I very much enjoy. I also really love Susie was able to find her place in the world at trapeze school. This world is so richly diverse in its opportunities, there’s surely got to be something for everyone.

As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.Why choose my arrangement?I have arranged the piano part to follow the original very closely, transposed into G Major, as I also want to be able to play it in gigs with my daughter who is a singer. As such I have made the piano part to lie under the fingers, making sure the clefs are easy to read. I have also included a ‘piano only’ score as it falls onto three pages, and is convenient for performing, as well as the two piano scores with each violin version.Some of the harmony is slightly changed, and I composed my own bridge passage with hints at the original. Also Adele sings a quite dissonant G in the melody, against the F sharps in some of the verses. Personally I love this, but it would need to be played subtly, and the clash is less obvious in the less dense sonority of a vocal part, so I have left this option open by notating the safer version, and suggesting the dissonance rather than the other way around. On the video is an example of both.I also include a bonus ‘Easy Violin’ Part that younger players will enjoy, or perhaps the pupils of those who buy the professional level arrangement. It requires some simple shifts in the Chorus and Bridge section. However, there are some places where an open ‘A’ could slip by unobtrusively in quaver passages too. Feel free to take as many bows as you need and don’t feel bound by my bowing suggestions. I have changed my mind many times! Just do what feels comfortable and enjoy it. Some places I have left out bowing altogether eg Bar 27 where you can experiment or discuss with your teacher.Adele sings the original at 72 bpm but I think you could certainly go as high as 76 bpm without losing that mournful quality, and it will help young players with their bowing.My Youtube Channel has many of my arrangements for String Quartet, recorded by the Worcestershire, UK ‘Capriccio Quartet’, as well as many songs for instrument and piano.
