Here is a flowing instrumental trio arrangement (for VIOLIN and CELLO duet with PIANO accompaniment) of a beautiful hymn from the late 1800's titled The City of Our God when associated with the lyrics by George Washington Bethune. The tune was composed by William Augustine Ogden. This hymn may be better known by its Spanish title Jerusalén Mi Amado Hogar (Jerusalem My Beloved Home) when used with contemporary lyrics by Nicolás Samojluk. The original lyrics by G. W. Bethune are shown below.Both the VIOLIN and the CELLO get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. The VIOLIN plays the melody for the first verse and then the CELLO leads with the melody for the second verse. The song begins in the key of G major for the first verse, then transitions to the key of C major during the piano interlude between verses.The range for each part is as follows: VIOLIN ~ A4 to A5; CELLO ~ B2 to D4. All notes for both the VIOLIN and CELLO are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

It is a medley of the Christian hymns: Are You Washed in the Blood, Let Jesus Come into Your Heart, Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound, He is Able to Deliver Thee and At Calvary. The obvious theme is Jesus as Savior, as portrayed in these hymns. There are numerous bass runs, descant lines, and, in the upper bells, doubled melodic lines. The melody is in the bass clef, in the chorus of Let Jesus Come into Your Heart. The harmonies used are often more exotic than those in the original hymn compositions. The shake technique is occasionally used. There is an extra tag ending in the last 2 measures. The MP3 audio file provided is in a piano patch/voice, but suffices to demonstrate how the arrangement is generally meant to sound. This is probably a 3- (3 minus) difficulty rating.

The introduction uses extraneous material where it leads in the first theme in the French horn, supplemented by trombone counterlines and trumpet flourishes. Thematic movies are then embellished leading up to a modulation where the tempo slows and a new mood encountered. The first trumpet carries the lead and offset with a horn duet line. Another modulation, an a-tempo with the theme in the low brass and accompaniment lines in the middle brass. This continues until the voices stack up until a boisterous conclusion is achieved.
