This is a transcription for trombone ensemble of the complete William Tell Overture, written by Gioacchino Rossini, dedicated to the Szeged Trombone Ensemble (SETREN) and further arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir. In reimagining the work for trombone octet, American composer P. F. Strohm has kept the piece in the original orchestral keys, and retained all the flourish and drama of the original work. The opening Dawn and Storm, the lovely Pastorale, and the touchstone Finale are all there. This tour de force work comes in two different versions, one for eight players (as arranged for SETREN), and this one for large ensembles of 16 or more players (as arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir). Both versions have eight parts, and are intended for trombone ensembles with the highest levels of technique and musicianship. Advanced level of difficulty, with a performance time of 11:45. Very accessible for the novice singer, this song also has plenty of depth for the advanced artist. It would be great material for a student or faculty conservatory recital or public art song concert, especially as part of a set (see other Spanish compositions by William P. Gorton: Brezo, ValentÃa, So el olivar). Intended to be sung in Castillian Spanish (i.e. reluciente would be pronounced reluthiente, with flipped r and theta-ized z and c where appropriate). A wedding could be an appropriate occasion for this lovely piece, as well.

Gorton (A0.1071035). Freedom's Cost is a beautiful lament on the price that has been paid by the few for so many, full of irony. With an 18th-century text by William Collins, this art song has been written with the style Schubert in mind (it was a Composition Modeling class project I completed when working on my doctorate). Freedom's Cost is a beautiful lament on the price that has been paid by the few for so many, full of irony. With an 18th-century text by William Collins, this art song has been written with the style Schubert in mind (it was a Composition Modeling class project I completed when working on my doctorate). Haunting and lugubrious, it captures the essence of the ironic text. This would be great material for a faculty or student conservatory recital, or a public art song concert. Very accessible for less-experienced singers, yet providing plenty of depth for interpretation.

On the Seashore of Endless Worlds, with a text by Tagore, beautifully paints the ironically naive view of children playing at the edge of the threatening ocean, a metaphor on the uncertainty of life and the virtue of innocence. Full of playful text painting, this is a true art piece, and accessible to even a moderately skilled singer. Wonderfully rocking piano ostinati illustrate the rising and falling of ocean swells and blasting chords the crashing of waves. The spiritual message here is to help us appreciate the joy of life even more intensely in the face of our eventual demise. This neo-impressionistic work would be excellent material for a faculty, student, or professional recital at conservatory or in public. Other Gorton songs are available to make a set.
