The feeling of soaring and singing under a cloud deck of ice in the arctic, a world now in transition. The bluesy section came from a then-barely-conscious awareness that the Belugas’ world could disappear. These whales also live in southeast Alaska, and are endangered by development there. The first part of this came during a composing residency when I felt hopeless about writing music. It reminded me that I do not write the music, but it comes through me. All but the third section came in about an hour. Months later it seemed to need a happier section so I wrote that. The dynamic marks are optional; playing in a traditional ragtime style is fine.

This piece was one she loved, but the words did not come until 2 months after her death and 2 days before Jaye and I were to perform Mom’s song Every Time We Meet at the Anderson Valley Variety Show. We sung it as best we could with so little practice time and in a key way too high. This version is transposed down a fifth. Listeners with parents who have gone on, and those who haven’t, may find some familiar themes here. If inspired, support your local elder and/or hospice organizations. I love my children to be happy. The first several bars came to me in a 2011 vivid dream in which Paul McCandless was playing soaring soprano sax melodies and Jaye Alison Moscariello was singing lyrics I did not remember from the dream. It was originally in D with some Dad-related chord progressions. This version is in A to better fit the alto voice. After writing 3 verses of rather convoluted lyrics about healing the planet, Jaye helped pare it down to one powerful verse that could be a world anthem. George and Paul play solos during the instrumental break. We think this would make a great national, or international, anthem. This is our planet, the one that we all share Let us remember that all life breathes the air Our world is sacred, its future in our trust And it continues after bodies turn to dust Shall we continue to think we own the beasts? Mendocino Coast Storm (c)2007. Always a sunny glow under a northern CA storm. Many a predicted humdinger of a storm has a spell like the eye of a hurricane when the sun comes out, or tries to, and the rain is a very light mist. Compared with the Seattle area with 3-4 layers of dark clouds, the storms do not seem too threatening with the relative light. However looks are deceiving when one realizes these storms can knock down enough redwood limbs for multi-day power outages in many winters. In the music we can hear the waves and bands of wind-driven rain as well as the sky glow.

October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano. I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire. The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire. These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared. In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds. In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later. The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that. It felt channeled rather than written – more like birth than development of some initial idea. The name is based on the translation of the last name of a friend; we shared a deep love for the forests. The northwestern US forests are a cathedral, and Paul McCandless’s oboe takes flight within it. Seattle Cascade/Shutters Corners. ©1989, ©2005 and ©2021. October sun & showers/Catskill village in early September. The repeated descending theme in the first half depicts the downpours between sunny breaks which came to me in 1982. The theme in the second half came during a bike ride in late afternoon (1989). I put it together in 2005. In 2011 I added an oboe part performed by Paul McCandless that year (recording of him playing it on soprano sax in 2018 is on Nature's Dream). I incorporated most of it in this solo piano arrangement which is a bit fuller than the simpler solo audio clip you will hear here (as well as a bit more challenging to play). Later I will make the accompaniment version available (with the simpler piano part).
