The Edmund Fitzgerald - Concerto for Piano and Strings

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.942953 Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 43 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #4267231. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.942953). Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. Stephenson stephensonmusic.com Jim@Stephensonmusic.com Product info: http://stephensonmusic.com/product/rhythms-of-the-spirit Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jim.stephenson.946 Twitter: https://twitter.com/ComposerJim YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/JimmyThird/featured Duration: 9' Commissioned by and dedicated to the Grand Symphonc Winds; Matthew George, Music Director. Premiered May 2, 2013. Notes about the Music: In the spring of 2012, I was in Minnesota attending some performances, and had the fortunate opportunity of catching up with Matthew George, conductor of the Grand Symphonic Winds. Matt had given the world premiere performance of my Concerto for Brass Quintet (Dodecafecta), and has always had a major presence in the formation of new works for winds, so I was very delighted when he brought up the idea of a new work for his group. The Grand Symphonic Winds, in honor of their 25th anniversary, were looking to celebrate the influx of many international cultures which had become a significant part of the landscape in Minnesota. This immediately called out to me in musical terms, namely in the forms of rhythms and spirituality (hence the title!) The piece opens and closes with heroic and beautiful music, signifying (to me) what most cultures seem to all be saying, but in different languages: we all just want peace, harmony and love. The entire middle section is very rhythmic, using many percussion instruments found in different cultures, also represented in Minnesota: Latin America (claves, bongos), Africa (Djembe) and if possible, Southeast Asia (Dholak). And just for fun, I even spelled out Minnesota in Morse code, but this was merely for my own enjoyment! I wish to thank Matt George, for all he has done for the field of music in Wind Ensembles, and specifically to him and the Grand Symphonic Winds for entrusting to me the responsibility of composing this new work, which I truly hope finds its home in the literature. Jim Stephenson March, 2013 Instrumentation: Wind Ensemble – one per part, except: 2 tubas recommended, French Horns doubled Recommended: Rhythm percussion sit in the middle of the ensemble, or immediately in front of the conductor, where visible to audience. Percussion instruments needed: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymb. a2 Claves, Djembe, Marimba, Triangle, Vibes, Bongos (or Dholak) Xylophone, Glock., Tambourine, Sus. Cymb. (if desired, the Dholak could replace the Bongos, using high/low sounds).

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1153134 Composed by Joseph Hasper. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score and parts. 93 pages. Joseph Hasper #753375. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1125807 By Michael Swedberg. By John Henry Hopkins Jr. Arranged by Terrence Niska. Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday. Score. 8 pages. Niska Music Publishing #726547. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125807). The travels of the three wise men as they followed a star to see the newborn King was the inspiration for this arrangement. It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.

The piano part is full of movement, evoking the motion of the ocean as it ebbs and flows. The billows are tossing high! The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness. No shelter or help is nigh. Carest thou not that we perish? How canst thou lie asleep when each moment so madly is threat'ning a grave in the angry deep?Master with anguish of spirit I bow in my gried today. The depths of my sad heart are troubled. Oh, waken and save, I pray! Torrents of sin and of anguish sweep o'er my sinking soul, and I perish! I perish! dear Master. Oh hasten and take control!Master, the terror is over, the elements sweetly rest. Earth's sun in the calm lake is mirrored, and heaven's within my breast. Linger, o blessed Redeemer! Leave me alone no more, and with joy I shall make the blest harbor and rest on the blissful shore. The winds and the waves shall obey thy will: Peace, be still. Whether the wrath of the stormtossed sea or demons or men or whatever it be, no waters can swallow the ship where lies the Master of ocean and earth and skies. They all shall sweetly obey Thy will: Peace, be still. Peace, be still. They all shall sweetly obey Thy will: Peace, peace, be still.

Arranged by Konrad Harley (1986-), 2024.Words by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822).I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,From the seas and the streams;I bear light shade for the leaves when laidIn their noonday dreams. From my wings are shaken the dews that wakenThe sweet buds every one,When rocked to rest on their mother's breast,As she dances about the sun.I wield the flail of the lashing hail,And whiten the green plains under,And then again I dissolve it in rain,And laugh as I pass in thunder.I am the daughter of Earth and Water,And the nursling of the Sky;I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;I change, but I cannot die.For after the rain when with never a stainThe pavilion of Heaven is bare,And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleamsBuild up the blue dome of air,I silently laugh at my own cenotaph,And out of the caverns of rain,Like a child from the womb, like a ghost from the tomb,I arise and unbuild it again.

Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.31054MEB). ISBN 9781513477107. 8.75X11.75 inches. The island of Cape Breton and its close neighbor, Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada are home to two of the oldest, strongest, and most vibrant fiddling traditions in North America. Cape Breton gave rise to a professional Celtic-based fiddling scene to rival anything coming out of Scotland and Ireland. Prince Edward Island’s traditional fiddlers developed lively, idiosyncratic styles every bit as musically compelling as anything you’ll hear on archival recordings of iconic American old-time fiddlers from the Appalachians. This book features 136 tunes from these two distinct but related fiddling traditions, collected by the author directly from master fiddlers, and arranged note-for-note for clawhammer banjo with as much flavor and nuance as possible. Woodwind Ensemble Bassoon,English Horn,Oboe - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.996139 Composed by Amilcare Ponchielli. Arranged by Erik Cole. Romantic Period. 101 pages. Erik Cole #6498527. Published by Erik Cole (A0.996139). A double reed transcription of the Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda, made famous by Disney's Fantasia. The Night section has been cut, as it's the least famous and included many string techniques that weren't very practical for winds to mimic, but it is otherwise true to the original. The 3rd parts are significantly easier than the others, but it is a challenging piece to take up to tempo, regardless. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi. I was pleasantly surprised at how well almost all of it worked, especially after lowering the key to an easier C/F major which suits the oboe/bassoon range much better. The numerous rubatos/tempo changes were tough to accurately portray in a multi-track recording done to a click track, but I thought it generally came out well without too many inconsistencies. It's a very fun piece to play if your group is up to the challenge.

Small Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1021989 Composed by Michael J. Burns. Contemporary. Score and parts. 43 pages. Effiny Music #6273591. Published by Effiny Music (A0.1021989). The original version of E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 2001 and premiered by the Eastwind Trio d’Anches (the faculty reed trio from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the composer on bassoon) during a tour in New Zealand and Australia in May 2001. The premiere of the version for saxophone trio was performed by members of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet on February 5, 2008.E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was inspired by the Australasian tour and my return home to New Zealand as a performer. Another inspiration was that my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in February 2001. Due to this there are elements of sadness and happiness throughout the piece. The bittersweet first movement begins melancholy, with a melody that freely switches between minor and major modes, but ends up with a lively dancing section focusing on happy memories, where the chickens from my grandmother’s farm may even be heard. The second movement is lively throughout with extensive use of mixed meter and includes a jazz rock interlude. While the work does not contain any actual New Zealand elements in the music, it was evocative of my time spent there growing up. It is in a style typical of my writing, containing jazzy influences combined with the more traditional. The title is given in Maori (the language of the native Polynesian race in New Zealand) and English and merely relates to the fact that it is written for three woodwind instruments. This work has been performed throughout North America and the South Pacific. This work also exists in two double reed versions: one for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, and another for oboe and two bassoons.

A collection of six duets and six trios written with the youngest players in mind!Ranges limited so that students can focus on rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, dynamics, and expression.Rhythms are limited to whole, dotted half, half, quarter, and paired eighth notes. Rhythms that even the youngest musicians can count! No syncopation! Each piece is about one minute in length to accommodate the limited stamina of younger players.A variety of styles and moods to motivate studentsEvery measure of each part is numbered! You're welcome! Duets may be performed by any two instruments, with like or mixed instrumentation, but if you use mixed instrumentation you may have better results if upper instruments play the top line and lower instruments play the bottom line. Also, it may be preferable to avoid having two tubas, as the results may be less desirable.Trios should be performed by two higher pitched instruments and one lower pitched instrument. Parts 1 and 2 could be flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, or horn. Part 3 should be at least one octave lower, and should be bassoon, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, trombone, baritone, or tuba.Books for Flute/Oboe, Bb treble, Eb treble, Tenor Saxophone, Horn, Bass Clef, Tuba, Bells/XylophoneNotesDuetsSneaking AroundMeter: 4/4Key: BbRange: A - GFocus: Staccato, Slur, Phrasing, Dynamic ContrastCountry DanceMeter: 3/4Key: BbRange: A - GFocus: Staccato, Triple Meter, PhrasingAll Aboard!Meter: 4/4Key: C minorRange: Bb - AbFocus: Staccato, Slur, Phrasing, Dynamic Contrast,Note: The second part on this piece may be especially challenging for young flute, oboe, and trombone players.Give and TakeMeter: 3/2Key: BbRange: Bb - FFocus: Interplay between voices, especially contrasting staccato and legato, Triple MeterNote: The meter signature of 3/2 allows for livelier rhythmic content without presenting sixteenth notes. Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1115994 By Thomas Graf. By Thomas Graf. Arranged by Thomas Graf. 20th Century,Classical,Jazz. 27 pages. Thomas Graf - the-hit-factory.com #717714. Published by Thomas Graf - the-hit-factory.com (A0.1115994). Fantasy in 3 movements for large wind ensemble, double bass and percussion 1. Deux Caracteres 2. Dialogues 3. Dance de Confusion Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The Saône flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le Rhône. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale! 1st movement: Deux Characters In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the Rhône get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement. 2. Dialogues: In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other! 3. Dance de Confusion The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! In the end, the initial confusion turns into a confusion: what belongs together flows and dances together. Composed by: Thomas H. Graf Arranged by: Thomas H. Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.1012109 Composed by Jannes Jacobs. Contemporary. Score and parts. 359 pages. Jannes Jacobs #3569171. Published by Jannes Jacobs (A0.1012109). Medioevo is a Composition based on impressions from the dark ages. The composer wrote the piece to take you on a journey through this remarkable period of time.Part 1: The Promised Beginning Land Of Departurethe part opens with a decisive rhythm in the lower brass, woodwind and percussion section. The theme played by the woodwinds is written to give the listeners a middle eastern feeling. This represents the crusades. The higher brass section play a nice and static counter theme.Part 2: Enchanted DominionThis section a bit mysterious and magic, played by mallets and flutes. The theme from the Oboe represents the ghost of a warlock trapped on the dominion. As we pas trough the dominion we need the protection of the church represented by the Harpsichord (clavecimbel) and clarinets.Part 3: The rustling ForestsAfter leaving the Enchanted Dominion we gallop with our horse trough the Rustling Forests. These forest show fast winds and have a lyric theme played by the trumpets and saxesPart 4: The SquareOnce trough the Forests we get to the Village square where the market is on going. We have several sales men selling their goods. These are represented in the themes of the woodwinds. The confusion gets to much and we try to hide from the sales men. The trumpets represent this part in a piano 5/4 movement which bring a big contrast trough the noises from the market place. In the end we need to get through the market place so we find a way to keep the sales men away by playing a wonderful legato melody which the dwarf’s taught us.Part 5: Dwarf’sThese social and kind people have a little village outside of the town where joyful melodies sound from both children as adults and elderly dwarf’s. the themes are divided under the different solo players of the woodwind sections.Part 6: Run or HideAfter a nice time with the Dwarf’s we continue our path but soon we face a large army coming our way. What do we do Run or Hide? This part is full of different melodies and counter melodies to represent the indecisiveness of the Dark Ages.Part 7: NeverlandWe arrive in the land of the elves where the tenor sax and horns play an agitato atmosphere to represent our hart beat when we see these beautiful creatures. The themes from the flutes and euphoniums show the grace and beauty of the elves. While the harp creates an elf like atmosphere.Part 8 The castle Gardenswe arrive in the castle gardens. These gardens are the most beautiful in the whole land. It makes the orchestra say Ahh. While the percussion section gives it a magical feeling. After being amassed we soon find out that these gardens are made for the Authorities and paid by our tax money which gives us a double feeling. Should this money not be better spend on good music?Part 9 Black Powderafter we find out the castle lord wrongly used or tax money we go and find some black powder to blow him up. After being hunted down by the castle lord trying to get some black powder. We find ourselves in the glorious fight.Part 10: Rageour glorious fight with the castle lord continues into an enormous climax where we are stroke down and ends up with a one way ticket to the graveyard.Part 11: The GraveyardThe whole orchestra sings a spiritual song to guide us into the afterlives. An angle comes to collect our soul (represented by the piccolo flute). And slowly or name is forgotten.
